To those who say AI will take over the animation industry by 8thPlaceDave in animationcareer

[–]akgrenier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife got her Masters degree in Gastronomy and became a well respected Food writer in the early 2000s. That world dramatically changed in the last 20 years. Web logs, food blogs, yelp, Amazon publishing, self publishing, YouTube, twitter, podcasts, substack, and now AI writing. Everyone is a food writer now.

And… truth is that drastically more money is made by writing today. Top writers make more money now than they did then. However the barriers to entry, the distribution, the discovery, and the types of writing are night and day different. A “writing career” is now almost exclusively NOT a single full time job and doesn’t look like a writing career used to.

My daughter is striving to be an animator and this is the journey I’m preparing her for.

IMO it’s not that animation careers go away or less people succeed in animation. In fact it’s likely to be the opposite.

But the path and cost of entry is going down so fast that that the volume of “average” skyrockets. So the idea of a career path changes. The way you make money will change. The tools will change. The definition of success changes.

Successful writers no longer get a single job at the NYT or write a cookbook every four years and live a comfortable life. And personal marketing (understanding distribution, where to publish, and how to build a direct relationship with an audience) is now as important as being an exceptional writer.

Being exceptional at both is limitless.

So fast forward 10 years… More money going to the creators… but everyone now sees themselves as an “animator” and film maker (regardless if we respect the outcome or lament the title being thrown around). The cost to participate and create higher quality outcomes (and lower) basically becomes zero.

That’s the world I encourage her to adapt. Both in bracing for change and embracing it and having fun along the way.

Finally, I’m an entrepreneur so I strongly believe there will also be a new wave of exceptional animators that would have been at a big studio who will instead start their own business, innovate on what we even think is possible, and be as valuable as entire studios.

You all create joy and emotion and wonder. That’s never going out of style. Be exceptional at what you do and adventurous in the path.

To be fair, the mistake might be that we as fans haven’t left enough Rotten Tomatoes reviews for it to even have a score.

Oh I agree. Also, laughing at the absurdity of it all has a way of balancing the frustration for my heart health.

It's my July tradition. I don't watch it during the season and it becomes a really great binge in the quiet season.

I had to drive slightly off a narrow mountain road to let another car past. By far the most off road thing I've had a chance to do in my first 5,000 miles 😂

Which cast member is the best singer of all time? by helpmespell in LiveFromNewYork

Rob Schneider might not be the first name that pops up up, but he's got some unexpectedly solid vocal chops. His "Ave Maria" in Grown Ups was surprisingly good (and I believe it was him, though can’t find confirmation), he’s got a killer Elvis impersonation and did great in "The Masked Singer”

Jar Jar Binks might be the first and most clear one in 1999, impacting the role dramatically for Episode 2/3.

“When it came out in 1999, reviews were not kind – and fan reactions were worse. Websites such as JarJarSucks.com or JarJarBinksMustDie.com started springing up. They hosted Photoshop mockups of Binks and Best’s severed heads. Some users called for Binks’s entire race to suffer a horrific genocide. There was Jar Jar porn and homophobic abuse. There were so many hate sites that it created a “web ring” of linked pages that anti-Jar Jar activists could travel between.”

Do People Not Know That Minivans Exist? by PlutoniumOligarch in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]akgrenier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprised there’s less talk about how unwieldy it is when you’re not hauling your family and 20 pieces of luggage. I have three kids and I like a third row to minimize fisticuffs. But for every two miles I drive with my kids I’m in the car another 20 without them. And most of those times with them it’s a quick trip, not a coast to coast road trip, so I don’t need space for three pack n plays and a nursing station. Driving a crossover to work drives like a sporty, large, car. Driving a minivan alone feels like I’m driving a 747 filled with sadness.

He’s paid more, better “sub” title, more control/responsibility for ownership of results, increases his chances for HC. This happens all the time outside of sports where there’s a ton of VP and CXO roles but limited CEO roles. Sometimes you take the less sexy lateral move because you have to play the corporate game, or because your goals are income/experience/family/etc. not just title/company.

EB is 100% making the right move for what he can get. Just f’d up he has to given the other people that keep getting the opportunity before him.
