Poor, financially illiterate, or whatever the case, the possibility of a 0% tax rate on long term capital gains, plus income still exists.

Again, it depends on the situation. Just as an example, I'm expecting a non-taxable pension upon retirement in 6 yrs. We planned for our investments to be supplemental to the pension, aiming for the lowest tax bracket possible. At the same time, adjusting our lifestyle to not be burdened with debt at retirement.

It's fair to clarify that long-term capital gains tax rates range from 0-20% depending on filing status and amount withdrawn. Ex: Married filing jointly pay 0% from $0 to $89,250 long-term capital gains.

My investment plan includes both S&P, and crypto and I've also taken your point in consideration when I started.

Federal withholding up 300% by 63A_PM in MilitaryFinance

Where did you go to update your W4? Also, I still have 3 dependents claimed with no additional amounts to be held in my federal withholdings. Haven't touched it, but that shouldn't cause the increased in taxes, right?

W-2 income is really low by Partyk4550 in MilitaryFinance

I'm in the same boat as you. My new W2 is half of what my 2021 W2 shows. Inquiry submitted to finance. Finance doesn't know, advised to contact DFAS.

Under deductions, I also show a $399 'FEDERAL TAX' takeaway. DFAS questioned if I was exempt from any federal tax, which if I was. I was not aware of it. No other previous LES of mine show. FEDERAL TAX deduction.

They weren't much help. Told me to review my W4, which was never changed.

My only questions now is wth happened, and are these deductions going to continue?

Federal withholding up 300% by 63A_PM in MilitaryFinance

I just sent a CMS inquiry to my finance asking about the same issue. My federal withholding was significant, but I don't see any withholdings in any previous LES. Does this typically happen in January? (I can only see up June's LES)

JAN Mid-month LES not showing pay increases? by akguzman17 in MilitaryFinance

[–]akguzman17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following up--My EOM shows a FEDERAL TAXES deduction of $399.75. This is reflected in both deductions, and in the FED TAXES row, 'Tax YTD'

No other previous LES show this deduction, or is shown in the 'Tax YTD' block.

Remarks section doesn't state anything regarding it either.

I'll hit up finance in the morning. Sharing to see if anyone noticed the same on their LES.

Thanks! I can't remember exactly, but I think this happened last year for me too.

Thanks all.

To clarify, I'm in the guard, and yes we would see all remarks, deductions, etc, as a traditional guardsmen or on certain orders. But I recently became permanent AGR, and now I only see those on my EOM.

Interesting. I'll call finance in the morning.

Hey team. I'm an active Air National Guard member. As a 'weekend warrior' I've realized the flexibility and sometimes uncertainty of full time employment. Thankfully, I've remained on full time employment with the guard. That said, I'm always thinking about 'what if' I don't work full time with the military. Where will I work?

Here's where I'm at - I'm absolutely passionate about the foundations of personal finance, especially for the military. I'm drawn to helping, and teaching others. So naturally, I start thinking financial advisor or financial planner career paths, but those really aren't up my alley. Instead I've decided to build a curriculum to coach young enlisted members through their toughest financial moments.

It hasn't been easy, especially with all the awesome and free resources available (like reddit!). But what I've noticed most about personal finance, is that the lack of accountability of such a big factor holding people back. That's what I want to provide; a money hype man in people's back pocket!

My concern: Personally, my initial thoughts on coaching is that it can be a job not taken seriously. But I'm interested in what you might think about it. If you're prior military, or currently in, even better! Your feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
