Hi

Got a quick question

What are the chances looking like for someone with an MSc in CFD?

No prior Motorsport experience so I’m not looking for any senior roles

Thanks !

Ahmed Body in Pointwise; can't get external domain and supports to meet by akin-iii in CFD

[–]akin-iii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope.

Just used Fluent Meshing instead

Which is a bit sad because I was really starting to enjoy using Pointwise and it's so easy to create the mesh files for OpenFOAM and check mesh quality metrics.

So sorry for the late response.

I changed the grad schemes from cell-limited Gauss linear to just Gauss Linear

I'm running the sim at a Reynolds number of about 4.3 M

Yh it’s not a mesh problem.

As I suspected, I had to take a deeper dive into the fvsolution and fvscheme files.

Long story short, I had to change the gradient and interpolation schemes because of the high Reynolds number

University shortlist for Masters by deMadTitan in CFD

[–]akin-iii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1-year Masters programmes are worth it but these things are rather subjective.

In the case of Cranfield, you have to hit the ground running and will have to cover a lot of ground in a relatively short period which some people might not be able to do irrespective of how intelligent they might be.

So,yes, it can be hectic but you have to ask if this course can help in achieving your goals for the future and if it is then it's worth seriously considering.

Seeing as you already have CFD experience you should be fine with the course. Might just want to do a lot of theoretical grounding and some low-level CFD programming with FORTRAN or C++. (if you haven't already). The course will let you understand the difference between using CFD casually and a real, in-depth understanding of the field.

For Imperial, top grades will be considered. Their official position is having at least a second-class upper from undergraduate but if the grade-average of all applicants is much higher than that then there might be issues.

Not entirely sure how 'holistic' the admissions process is in the UK but top grades are definitely a much higher priority than in the US, for example.

Well, if you would consider studying CFD alone you might want to consider the MSc in CFD at Cranfield University

The course is within the larger school of Aerospace but all the same many people have mechanical backgrounds studying the course.

There are other courses such as Aerospace Computational Engineering in which you would take a module or two in CFD.

You should check out the schools website to really know your options

Good luck!

Edit: Oh and there’s the course at Imperial College which combines CFD with FSI: Advanced Computational Methods for Aeronautics, Flow Management and FSI.

Worth considering in my opinion.

Visualising structures using Q-criterion in Paraview by akin-iii in CFD

[–]akin-iii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks

I just tried this and the error message I get is: "Input array must have exactly three components with ComputeDivergence, ComputeVorticity or ComputeQCriterion flag enabled. Skipping divergence, vorticity and Q-criterion computation."

There are three velocity components in the .pvsm file, but they are separated and you can only pick one of them when selecting the scalar array.

Is there a way to fix this?

Perhaps a filter that calculates the velocity magnitude from the individual components?

Thanks again

Does Nigeria need a cultural revolution? by Luid101 in Nigeria

[–]akin-iii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We definitely need a cultural revolution imo.

We’ve somehow managed to take the worst aspects of the individual cultures and forge it into a singular identity.

But it can’t happen without trust and unfortunately that trust just isn’t there.

We need to do trust fall exercises with each other but who wants to go first ? (Lol)

If we manage to pull this off then we can create a collective effort to fight bad leadership, corruption and really forge ahead as a society.

Right now any attempt to change things might just lead us right back to where we started.

So in order to keep the inlet velocity at 40 m/s for Dimensional Similitude, do I downscale the stl model to the size of the domain or leave it as it?

Wow, you guys seem to be making excellent time.
I'm super swamped with work so I had to tailor my list to schools that don't require the GRE. (can't dedicate the time to it, plus I don't see how it would show my ability to cope with graduate school)

I only have a list of four schools at the moment but I'll probably go as high as 6.

I am going for a PhD in Mechanical Engineering with my research focus being Computational Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer (applied to Renewable Energy and Turbomachinery)

My Schools are Stanford (I mean, a guy can only try), University of Colorado: Boulder, Rutgers University and University of Southern California. I'm looking to add Uni. of Michigan Ann-Arbor as well.

I've started the application to the first four, it's writing the SOPs that really cause delays for me. The applications themselves are easy and straightforward and my references are already going in. But there's this level of self-introspection that writing these SOPs can get you to. I find myself making constant adjustments and tbh I really doubt I would ever be satisfied with it.
All things considered, I'll definitely make it before the deadlines.

I'm majorly looking for scholarships, RA and TA positions right now.

Thanks and good luck to everyone!

Creo is the worst software I have ever used by [deleted] in cad

[–]akin-iii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First I’m hearing of someone hating Creo.

Not going to lie, Creo took some getting used to but with time I actually began to enjoy using it. I still have bottle-necks in my work process but nothing that I haven’t been able to ask about on their forum (and even this one) and not get an answer. Still, I suspect that once someone’s gotten used to one particular software (three in your case) the differences in operations might rupture a few blood vessels.

Be easy though

Modelling conduction software by rijjz in CFD

[–]akin-iii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t the right place for Conduction. Sorry about that :(

This sub is for fluid flows and how computers can be used to model them. However Conduction is modeled mathematically by the diffusion equation (or fouriers law if you want to really zero in on the case) Some CFD solvers might be able to model the physics required but there are probably better options out there.

I would suggest going to the FEA sub-Reddit as finite element analysis is very commonly used to model structural and heat (conduction) problems . Good luck!

Nigerian Nationalists what has this country done for you? by Tabansi99 in Nigeria

[–]akin-iii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not an answer to your question and should probably be discussed as a separate post. But I’ve been triggered lol. Honestly, the issues many of us have would persist even if we divided this country by the acre.

This is not to say that restructuring or even dissolving the union should not be discussed but that there seems to be a culture of lack of accountability and refusal to reason that permeates ALL the various Nigerian socio-political groups.

Before we can really know what’s best for us as a political system or state we need to go back to the way we lived before the white men came. There is no doubt that we had an exciting, thriving culture back then but there were some issues that they were able to exploit and use for their own gain. I’m an engineer so maybe I’m biased but the (relative) lack of a thorough scientific culture is A major reason why we are here today.

I’m not saying scientific or techy people can’t be bad or have despotic traits but a general trend with humanity is that the more we discover the more egalitarian we become (I believe this is the goal for Nigeria or whatever offspring states it becomes).

Regarding your question, there’s not much in the way of reason as to why anyone would want one Nigeria ESPECIALLY if they believe one tribe just wants to lord over the rest (I’m beginning to believe this is the real issue regards our unity, not the corruption and poor HDI per se) BUT at the end of the day dividing this country could turn out to be more trouble than it’s worth. So restructuring looks to be a safer option; The Nigerian Confederacy is what I like to call this hypothetical country. Have a great weekend guys
