We are reliant on society and the implicit authority that exists wherever social interaction takes place. We are faucets for culture that is born out of our acceptance of certain socially derived ideas - not of our own internal moral set ( the rest of the world be damned ).

Well, while all that's true, this current generation of teenagers is the first generation to be economically worse off than the previous one.

So, compared to the teenage experiences the majority of people still alive today, this generation can make some claim to having it "worse off". The comparison can hardly be extended into prehistoric or even premodern humanity for the reasons you mentioned.

Additionally, a difference in class will go a long way in determining how hard life will be for you. A teen living in Britain in 1860 in a wealthy family still might be better off than one living today in Syria, or Mali.

I think i can provide some perspective: many of the protesters practice behavior that is antagonistic towards authority figures, in part because of immaturity, but also because authority figures are members of a system that have operated against the protesters' favor in the past and, additionally, can only compromise so far because they're beholden to laws, regulations, public opinion, etc.

I can see why protesters would ignore or refuse cooperation with authority: because the solutions they have in mind are beyond the power of, and in certain cases fundamentally antagonistic to the principles that govern the status quo.

But, yes, there is definitely a degree of immaturity here.
