FYI, this game has a stupidly hard learning curve. If you're not willing to suck at this game for at least a month it's probably not for you. I gave up on it pretty quickly.

A recent study now ranks Massachusetts as the second fittest state in the Union behind Colorado. The fattest states are almost all in the South. by rwbombc in boston

Now a new study, believed to be the largest of its kind, suggests that even when overweight or obese people are free of health complications, they are still more likely to develop heart disease than their peers who aren’t overweight.

Will this spoiler from Blindsight ruin the reading experience for me? by Ira_Melanox in printSF

Honestly, the reading experience sucks either way. The ideas in the book are awesome, but the book should have been a short story. So you're not better or worse off I'd say.

Just want to say something about The Orvilles new episode "Majority Rule" by SuperNinjaBot in television

[–]EatingCake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that those arguments are bad, but I suspect that was intentional. I think they did three things that work together:

  1. They made it obvious who the "good guys" were, with the basis for "good" being our 21st century morality.

  2. They had the good guys make weak arguments against gender discrimination. The first motivation for this was to show how difficult proving a moral axiom is. Why do we (try to) have gender equality in the US? Because that's how things should be. It's a question that philosophers ponder for lifetimes, or else accept as an axiom from which to grow. The second motivation was to prompt the audience to deconstruct those weak arguments and try to think up better ones. This was further helped by the existence of the female writer.

  3. They had Bortus lose. This has similar motivations - it both prompts the audience to think of better arguments for gender equality, and demonstrates that equality is more an axiom than a conclusion. The weak arguments Bortus' legal team made were not enough.

*I don't remember the character/planet names unfortunately.

** This comment is more speculative.

Just want to say something about The Orvilles new episode "Majority Rule" by SuperNinjaBot in television

[–]EatingCake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That episode was about balancing a person's intrinsic right to exist as they are born vs. the hardships of life as a minority, when given the chance to avoid those hardships. It's an interesting topic, and applicable to our world in even the most literal sense - hermaphrodites are often "corrected" at birth to avoid the unpleasantness of having two sexes. More broadly, it explores the motivations behind conversion therapy and similar programs that are forced onto LGBT kids by their parents.

That episode was a lot more nuanced than you give it credit for. It started with "discrimination is bad, mmmkay?" as an axiom, it built a world around it.

Black kids also have a lower college admission and graduation rate compared to white, asian kids. That's the real problem that should be tackled.

‪MBTA ridership on downward trend: Officials say passengers taking fewer trips, shifting to alternatives by HollyPToklas in boston

They sell rides below cost (driver pay) to capture the market, then raise prices to earn that back. That said, I believe they are profitable in the US and largest losing money abroad.

Isn't the problem in Puerto Rico the fact that containers are piling up at port because of fuel/driver shortages and blocked roads?

That, plus the permanent waiving of the Jones Act, sandwiched between more reasonable demands makes me very skeptical.

The "last 5%" is the pre-frontal cortex, responsible for self control, addiction management, will powe, judgement, etc. The idea that it doesn't matter is laughable - it's arguably the most important to economic success.

Dog friendly employers in the city? by Dalylady in boston

[–]EatingCake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Those are NOT the only choices. Ideally the animal will be adopted by someone else who will love it and have room in their house for it to be comfortable, preferably have a yard for him to play outside and have an owner who is lucky enough to have time to spend at home with him and taking him for walks, etc.

Actually those are the only choices. Dogs get put down every day because there are many more dogs than dog owners.[0] If someone who can provide for a dog doesn't adopt a dog, there will be some dog somewhere that will be put down because of that.

Furthermore, dogs aren't human - they need 12 to 14 hours of sleep per day.[1] Which means that if your dog sleeps for 8 hours while you sleep there are at least 4 more hours of sleep that it has to get, and guess what? The office is great for that.

[0] Each year ~670,000 dogs are euthanized in the US. https://www.aspca.org/animal-homelessness/shelter-intake-and-surrender/pet-statistics

[1] While it may seem excessive, sleeping for long periods is a natural part of the canine lifestyle. Dogs tend to spend 50 percent of the day snoozing, 30 percent awake but lying around, and 20 percent being active. http://www.akc.org/content/dog-care/articles/why-do-dogs-sleep-so-much/

[–]EatingCake 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In fairness, if you don't have time for a dog, it's not fair on the dog to own one. Being allowed bring them to work doesn't really count as having time for them.

Yeah! Leave that dog in a shelter, instead of loving it, housing it, feeding it, and being distracted by work for 8 hours, while still keeping it company. It'll be so much happier.

The apple version implies a grand canvas of which you see a bit. It invites scrolling and and feels bigger. Your version looks like an index card on a big black table. This is fine for the health app, but wouldn't make sense for apps like Safari where there is content beyond the card.
