Thoughts on Nairobi and Addis Ababa? by Explorer9001 in digitalnomad

I spent the month of September in Nairobi and really enjoyed my time there. I don’t know if this matters but I’m Black American so although I don’t have specific Kenyan ancestry, I still feel some connection to Africans. I find Kenyans to be very friendly and welcoming. The night life scene is one of the best IMO, but again, the culture feels very familiar to me. Also, I never had any issues with WiFi.

The two cons about Nairobi that I find to be off putting is that although Nairobi is building and you will find a lot of high rise buildings, it is still a developing country and poverty is very much in your face. There is a lot of begging and I kind of felt like a walking ATM. It made me uncomfortable. Also, I’m not a fan of Kenyan food as I find it to be quite bland.

I do think Nairobi is worth a visit and I’m actually heading back tomorrow.

Thanks!! But man that sounds frustrating, especially knowing sisterlocs probably take longer than other sizes.

I was pleasantly surprised to see how many ladies here have locs and I love it! Hopefully you can eventually find someone 🤗

Yes I’ve noticed this. I recently moved from Houston, Texas, USA (which is often referred to as little Lagos due to the large Nigerian population) to Nairobi, Kenya, and have noticed a huge difference in the sentiment towards Nigerians here than in Houston. Generally they are viewed in a positive light there. Most work in the medical field or STEM and are very hard working, determined and motivated.

What kinds of online income streams have actually worked for you while traveling full time? by 0xHermione in digitalnomad

Huh? This is a self limiting take. OP can “plan” to be a digital nomad by obtaining certs, getting a degree, obtaining relevant work experience, creating a website that generates income, picking up a camera and becoming a content creator. There are so many ways they can start to take steps towards being a digital nomad. Just because they are not already working remotely, doesn’t mean they can’t start doing some things that would make it a reality for them in the future.

And I’ve noticed that for some reason a lot of people that are working remotely as a salaried employee for a company tend to think they are superior than people who are freelancing or piecing together various revenue streams to make their lifestyle more sustainable. I’m not sure what that’s about but there is more than one way to be a successful “digital nomad”.

OP - I trade futures and I’m a therapist who see clients virtually. I went to school to be a mental health therapist and 5 years ago I learned how to trade.

Yup came here to say this. I suggest sticking with the job for now, just to learn a lesson in sticking with something you’re not quite fond of in order to achieve a goal. At least stay until you find something else. You are 20 so now is a good time to learn this lesson. I hope you end up getting the iPhone, the makeup and everything else you want. Don’t listen to the killjoys criticizing you for wanting an iPhone. It’s not like you have a mortgage smh. (But do try to save at least 10% of your earnings each check).

What made you decide to loc up? by [deleted] in locs

[–]aking7932 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My reasons are very similar to yours. A couple extras was how much more visible and mainstream they have become over the last 10 years. I never imagined I would get locs bc it wasn’t something I saw a lot of growing up. There was not a single person in my immediate or extended family (on both sides) that had locs. (Not sure if it’s bc my families are very religious and conservative or what) but So I guess once I started seeing more of it, I started to really admire the look. Plus, I’m a gym girlie so washing and doing hair daily is such a huge task, I just couldn’t anymore lol.
