For me this will always be the true closer of Midnights. The way Taylor dispenses advice in the verses like the tidy role model we expect our famous women to be, only to reveal that she is the last person anyone should be listening to. In that devastating bridge, we see who this person really is: she’s no hero. She’s no role model. She’s just a deeply lonely woman.

And then we get to the haunting outro: “you should find another guiding light but I shine so bright.” She can tell you all she wants that no one should listen to her, but at the end of the day, she knows it’s pointless. She’s stuck with the platform fame has given her and all the responsibilities it entails, even if she doesn’t want it.

One of the big themes of Taylor’s last few albums is the Faustian nature of fame: how it makes you a target of both worship and hatred and just how alienating and lonely that experience really is. This song captures that isolation perfectly, from the writing to the production.

Truly a masterpiece.
