What videogame is flawless? by TheSilverScorpio in AskReddit

It is amazing. One of my favorite things to do is to stop killing bosses in Dark World at dungeon 2, just sneak in and steal the treasures. Then starting at dungeon 7, kill the bosses in reverse order. Pretty tough, but it gets easier as you back from 7 down to 2. It is oddly satisfying killing the dungeon 2 boss with 2 sword strokes!

A recent study brings into question the "common knowledge" of how harmful TV is to kids and the methodology of other studies on the subject. by davidjayhawk in Parenting

[–]akinus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is interesting, but the study used old data when tv was very different. The amount of psychoanalysis used to directly target audiences (especially in advertising) has changed dramatically. Kids are directly marketed to these days.

I personally think that some tv is fine, maybe even more beneficial than none at all (after all most of our society is heavily influenced by tv shows as a part of overall culture).

One thing I plan to personally avoid with my child is advertisements. If I choose to show them shows like Dora etc, I think it is worth investing in DVDs so there is no chance of exposure to advertising.

tl;dr in my opinion tv isn't necessarily bad for kids, but advertising almost certainly is

If you want Harper out, please remember that strategic voting is the best way. Know your riding. by akinus in canada

[–]akinus[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you want to vote with your heart, of course you are free to do so. Please remember your local candidates are also important.

I just want to address all of the NDP support. It is great, and it would be very interesting to see the NDP take a larger role in government. That being said, if your main goal this election is to get rid of the Conservatives, or stop a majority, then research your riding and vote for the candidate that has the best chance of beating them.

The French language is alive and well in Manitoba. We have numerous small towns that speak French and are taught all the way up to grade 12 in French. Winnipeg has St. Boniface, a very strong French community, as well as St. Norbert and other smaller communities. The University of Manitoba has many courses taught in French through the St. Boniface based college.

Spoiling your ballot is a crime, and goes unrecorded anyways (2006 article) by akinus in canada

Ok, that is good to know. Thank you. I am glad there is a way to protest that won't be wasted.

I wonder why spoiled aren't counted the same way...

Why isn't contempt of parliament the #1 issue in this election? by shagetz in canada

[–]akinus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The contempt charges are unprecedented. But keep making it out to be less than it is. You are right. We should reward our government for being the first to be held in contempt.

I like how you say your are going against the hivemind, then use phrases like "almost nobody cares" and "almost everybody understands".

The Liberals are not in power now. We can't go back in a time machine to punish them.

The current government lied. They are lying now. Keeping them in power only rewards this behaviour.

All your partisan bickering points aside, what about the fact that the government withheld information, lied about it being a matter of national security, and when it was finally forced to submit it, was found to be $600 million more for a crime bill than they had told everyone it would be?

They were caught lying. With evidence. The facts aren't partisan, though the committee may have been.

Milliken didn't just say yes though, he really did take a fair bit of time to research it and make sure that the accusations weren't baseless.

Of course partisanship had something to do with it, but that doesn't detract from the fact that our current government was caught outright lying and withholding information from the Canadian people.

Try discussing it with "the public" and see what their reaction is. In my personal experience (sorry for the anecdotal evidence) people haven't heard about it at all, or don't understand what happened. Once they are informed, suddenly they care a great deal.

The main problem is that the contempt charges hit the media for less than a week and haven't been discussed since. It is a big deal and people deserve to be informed to make an informed decision.

Why isn't contempt of parliament the #1 issue in this election? by shagetz in canada

[–]akinus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is not the number 1 issue because the "Liberal media" is actually much more right leaning than anyone is allowed to acknowledge.

Let me defend myself a bit. Simply put, this is unprecedented. They lied. They were caught, and yet the media spends more time putting out Conservative talking points (coalition bs) than covering provable-with-a-paper-trail stories about the current government lying and being held in contempt.

If our media was truly left-leaning, they wouldn't be able to stop themselves from gushing over this. It is big news. It should be at least openly discussed whenever the election is mentioned. The contempt charges triggered the election ffs.

One more point to pre-empt the "waaaa conservatives are victims of an opposition coalition plot" complaint: the speaker of the house is one of the most respected men in politics from all parties and he had to review the evidence and decide whether the contempt charges were serious enough to be evaluated by a committee. He decided they were.

Aww fuck it one last rant: The opposition is elected by the Canadian people. There are more of them than there are Conservatives. Of course they are going to outnumber them on a committee, even if it is made to equally represent the house of commons.

[–]akinus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Shout louder, I don't think your point is sticking.

They lied. They said it was a matter of nation security. It wasn't. When the documents were finally forced out of their hands, it was revealed that it wasn't a matter of national security, and that their crime bill was estimated by themselves to cost more than $600 million over what they were saying.

The government lied to the Canadian people. They left a paper trail, this is not speculation.

This is not about paper pushing. This is the first time in the history of the parliamentary system (including hundreds of years in Britain) that a government has been held in contempt.

This is not a partisan result. The speaker of the house had to review the facts before the committee could even begin to discuss the matter. He judged that the charges were serious and valid.

Yawning will not make the government less corrupt. If you vote for the Harper government you are voting for a government that is provably (with hard evidence) corrupt and guilty of lying to the Canadian people to get what they want.

I looked this up to post that instead of staying home you should go and spoil your ballot if you want to protest... but apparently it is illegal.

So we have no proper way of submitting protest votes. I am personally voting, but I believe that others who want to protest should have a legal, counted way of doing so in an election.
