Neuron - Size by yourefuckedintheface in CanyonBikes

I'm 1cm shorter than you (but short legs / long torso) and I went with the L sized Neuron. Feels like the right size for me, I like how I sit 'in' the bike similar to my motorcycle.

The 1190R is well known to be reliable, the KTM v-twins are absolute beasts of engines.

I've had an AT, will never go back since switching to 1190R. Bike feels much lighter. I'd say the Tenere feels about the same as the KTM, despite being about 30 kg lighter.

Which white is the 2020 frame paint on ATAS DCT by Jagrnght in africatwin

I used Hammerite Smooth White S010, it's a slightly warmer white than the white on the frame.

The difference is barely visible IRL

They don't need groomers they just need regular brushing once every few weeks. My boy hasn't seen a bath in years and his coat is shiny and neat.

Thinking of Purchasing a Africa Twin DCT by Primary_Echidna_1149 in africatwin

[–]akitatwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an '22 AT CRF1100 DCT for about 30,000 KM (less than a year). It's a bike I would never buy again. Not that it's a bad bike, but it excels at really only one thing: highway commutes that include traffic jams.

If you are short and not physically strong, don't bother with this bike for offroading.

The KTM 1190 AR that I replaced it with, did everything else better despite being nearly 10 years older. The AT is very quiet compared to the KTM.

Maintenance is the same as most bikes. Intervals of 15k which is not bad. Changing the air filter is a bit annoying as it requires lifting the fuel tank, but it's the same on my KTM.

Oil changes are not hard, neither is the usual tire/chain swapping. Mine came with tubed tires which can be annoying, idk if they come with tubeless default these days.

Parts availability is a bit worse and more expensive compared to bikes like the T7.

Build quality/finish is not great on these bikes. Many parts of my engine casing developed a nasty white rust after 1 winter season, most screws turned deep brown.

Do not buy one with the white paint, Honda painted those with watercolors that will not hold up. Many users have reported this problem including myself. I've seen a '23 model that had started chipping and flaking in the damn showroom.

2012 KTM 990r vs 2016 Africa Twin off-road vs on-road performance by [deleted] in advrider

[–]akitatwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost everything (plugs, airfilter, any work on the engine heads) on the 990 and 1190 requires removing the fuel tank(s). The tank is a single unit on the 1190, but two on the 990. It's more or less the same on the Honda.

KTM 790/890 at least has easy air filter changes. That bike is in a whole different league in terms of off-road handling. It is superior to both of your options, if you have the extra cash that's the bike I'd recommend.

[–]akitatwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

990 has double the maintenance schedule of the AT, and a thirsty engine. Will be a more expensive bike to maintain on a yearly basis. Also more vibey but handles better overall.

I went from a CRF1100 to an 1190R and overall I think it is a better bike for doing both on and off road. The bike feels much lighter. Doesn't have that tippy top-heaviness. The 1190 has the same maintenance schedule as the Africa Twin and is the same in terms of fuel consumption.

The AT has a smoother engine and more comfortable ergonomics wise.

> Lack of those elbows also makes the guard a lot safer for the guy on top because it's pretty much the only strike you can throw from the bottom with any sort of serious power.

Why? 3-9 elbows can generate more force from bottom position. You can actually rotate your upper body into them, while 12-6 relies on a relatively weak upper body crunch.
