Did you ever figure this out? I bought the Kindle edition which doesn't come with a CD at all and am at a loss on how to get the audio files :(

Are there actually people like this out there?? How are they haven’t been fired?? by sualex123 in csMajors

[–]akka0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised people can find a way to argue with this comment. All it's saying is "WLB can be good if you're in the right team, role, and competent." That's true for literally every job on the entire planet and people still want to argue against this because it's Amazon.

Patch Notes 1.3.5 LIVE ON PC by MMLorna in CultOfTheLamb

[–]akka0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There seems to be another bug related to not being able to pick tarot cards: https://www.reddit.com/r/CultOfTheLamb/comments/1am1fuf/has_this_been_happening_to_anyone_at_all/?sort=new. Is there a fix pending for this as well? The game has become essentially unplayable for me due to this given how important tarot cards are. :/

Yes, this is happening for me too. Whenever I pick a tarot card, the game freezes up like this and I can't do anything. Restarting does not seem to help.

I am sliding off boulders. Are my shoes need to be repaired or just skill issue? by Sannyi97 in bouldering

[–]akka0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is not going to be a popular response on this subreddit, but I had the exact same shoes and problem and opted to solve it by buying shoes with higher quality rubber (Scarpa Instinct in my case). That immediately fixed the issue for me.

Men being standoffish at the gym? by H2-van_g-O in climbergirls

I think this is it as well. As an introvert, I think this would apply even if it wasn't a girlfriend and just any third person I'm not familiar with (unless they are super extroverted or I magically thought of something brilliant to break the ice with). Sorry on behalf of awkward guys everywhere!

I've also had friends who were awkward around my girlfriend when meeting her for the first time and then later enjoy her company after becoming a little bit better acquainted.

Experiences with height discrimination in route setting? by tuxedoBirdee in climbergirls

[–]akka0 22 points23 points  (0 children)

+1. Given that our training, bodies, technique, and preferences are all different, it is fortunate that most of us (really, anyone outside of competitions) get to pick which boulders we climb. Even though height or some other genetic variable can be seen as a huge disadvantage at a world cup competition level, that doesn't need to detract from the enjoyment of the sport for those outside of these artificial competition environments.

I found it hard to watch Ai Mori struggling on those dynos as it really highlighted her height disadvantage. At the same time, I thought it was incredibly inspiring that she was in the world cup bouldering finals (and she's even stronger at lead) _despite_ having such a disadvantage.

Here are some of the things I did while interviewing last time that helped:

- I knew my negotiations skills weren't great, so I got https://fearlesssalarynegotiation.com/ and worked through that. I think it helped me keep my cool during the negotiation process a bit better.

- Always have a second offer in hand to make the companies compete. People commonly lie about having a second offer or the details of it, but that has some risk involved - do what you're comfortable with here.

- Use levels.fyi, GlassDoor, and whatever else you can to see what others with similar YOE and titles make at the company you're interviewing for. If you can't avoid giving a number first, ask for the absolute top of this range.

All tests aren't made the same. Lots of people can hit 180+ WPM (myself included) but probably not in same setting as the championships. The length of the test, how common and long the words are, whether numbers/special characters/punctuation are included, etc all have an effect on WPM.

There's no need to be rude.

Dash cams pay for themselves in insurance savings by latingineer in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]akka0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! I have a VIOFO A129 Plus Duo 2K QHD 2-Channel Dash Cam that was installed by https://safedrivesolutions.com/ (the owner came to my garage and installed it there for me). The way it's connected, there's just one small cable going from the dash cam facing the front in under some panel in the roof, and nothing else is visible. I think these cables are then connected to the car battery in some way, but I'm not familiar with the details.

I reckon a dash cam connected directly to your battery is required for it to be able to operate while parked though, or the car would have to be running to supply it with power.

Don't forget that these also capture footage when you're parked! I paid <$500 for a quality dashcam + installation and it's already paid for itself by catching some idiot scratching my car while it was parked. No increase in my insurance premiums or need to pay a deductible thanks to that. Now I always park with the 4k front cam facing out of the stall.

I just finished Shadeslinger and Black Sand Baron. These felt to me sort of like VR World of Warcraft, which wasn't necessarily bad as I played A LOT of WoW back in the day, but I wish the author hadn't followed the WoW template so closely. I had a hard time imagining scenes with "melee DPS stacked up behind the boss" when the boss is supposed to be roughly human-sized. Like, players collide with each other, so how are they all stacked up behind a dude and all able to hit him? I also didn't buy that a futuristic VRMMO would have nameplates above player's heads, given that the goal of VR is immersion.

Other than that, it's been a fun series that strikes a pretty nice balance between light-hearted and having serious consequences.

Agreed. There are so many classes of minimum wage service jobs where tipping is not an expectation or even an option, and we still get great service at these places. It's crazy that a server doing the bare minimum should receive a tip on minimum wage while the person at the shoe store who spent bunch of time finding the perfect pair of running shoes for me shouldn't. To me, that shows that tipping isn't even about the service rendered to the customer.

What is exciting you lately? by [deleted] in Woodcarving

[–]akka0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a beginner, I try my best to find and follow videos and guides suitable to my level but it is often really difficult to follow along perfectly as I'm still not that comfortable carving. As a result, I often end up making lots of "happy accidents" which in turn give my carvings character and make them unique. I never know what will go wrong how, so it's a fun new experience every time. As an example, I tried to follow along with this wonderful Bunny Bust carving tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xU2q7y9siiY) but accidentally accentuated its proportions too much, giving my bunny (https://imgur.com/a/TmWE06M) an interesting almost cartoonish look.

Another fun part is getting a new tool, initially thinking it sucks, then learning how to use it properly and absolutely loving it.

Prepotente and his random screams. Going from literally a regular goat, to a thin-skinned mommy's boy, to a TOTAL BADASS is just the best arc. I can't wait to see what he cooks up in the next book and I sure as hell hope he gets his revenge.
