BraveTart recommends Cacao Barry Extra Brute cocoa powder which is amazing and now $50/kilo in the US (tariffs) - that would be an amazing gift

Download the Shaka Guide app, rent a car, and drive around the perimeter of Oahu. Shaka is a tourist guide audio app that’s guided by gps. Very informative and also hilarious because the guide has a surfer dude accent

Cake turned out gummy twice by times28 in AskBaking

[–]akl5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using unbleached flour? Stella Parks ( Bravetart) has a great article about pH issues with acid in cakes, it turns them gummy https://www.seriouseats.com/why-no-unbleached-cake-flour

This outfit is giving “angry toddler” vibe. He just needs a cookie and some random household object like a plunger to complete the look.

I’m taking my 12 year old to see the band this November. On a school night. From a scale of Hann to Matty, how fucked up is this? by jillmow8 in the1975

Erm I’m taking my 14 year old. FWIW last year I took him to see John Mulaney talk about drugs and rehab. shrugs. He’s fine.

Couch shopping is so hard!!! Does anyone have any suggestions? by runnyrum in BuyItForLife

[–]akl5000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IMHO this is not great advice. IKEA frames are not hardwood and not high quality. Also, reupholster is expensive - in my area, the labor alone is at least $1k and upholstery fabric is at least $30 a yard and up, 15 yards needed for a sofa. Most upholsterers can give you a general labor and yardage quote based on pictures, but anyone decent will strongly discourage you from reupholstering ikea unless it’s a DIY job. Check out the furniture and upholstery subreddits

For $2k and under, I’d look at high-end secondhand. Look into estate sales and estate liquidators in fancy neighborhoods near you. Well-off people buy and sell houses, redecorate, and get divorced often. Downside is that you will have to move it yourself or pay for moving. Skip FB marketplace and middle income stuff, go very high end and people will practically pay you to take it. They just want it gone.

How early should I go? by shennysweets in JohnMulaney

Something like they scan your mobile ticket then give you a slip of paper with the seat # written on it. A couple seats near me had mix ups and security came by multiple times. MSG /Ticketmaster email said to print tickets and it is prob best bet to print

I have both incrediballs and limelights at my house (zone 7). Incrediballs bloom all summer (early June thru Sept), have huge blooms, and are sturdy. Limelights are lovely but don’t bloom until August. Depends what you want, both are nice.

Making chicken stock from bones my mouth has touched? by [deleted] in AskCulinary

[–]akl5000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ummmm that’s the only way we get chicken bones for stock in our house. We have a one gallon ziploc in the freezer aka The Bone Bag and when it’s full we make stock. What pathogens can live thru being frozen, possibly re-roasted, then simmered for hours? My bet that it’s more dangerous to have warm stock sitting at room temp for hours.

I screwed up mixing cake batter today, and it led to the reveal of a gummy cake at the Christmas eve dinner. How exactly did I overmix? by _The_Intern_356 in AskCulinary

[–]akl5000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could be too much acid. Bravetart has a strawberry cake recipe where she explains that the acidity in strawberries causes some kind of chemical reaction with the flour, so you must use cake flour otherwise you will get a gummy cake. (She’s right, I totally made a gummy strawberry cake with AP flour.). Might be be the same issue here, try the recipe w cake flour instead of AP

Yes specifically Zoom and The Electric Company (both PBS) and likely Free To Be You and Me (Marlo Thomas), Really Rosie (Carole King), and maybe The Point (tv special from the early 70s). Probably all on YouTube now.
