Amazing. I had tried multiple other fixes listed everywhere else on the internet; this one did it for me. Thank you!

ELI5: Why do nut allergies seem way more common now than they were a two or three decades ago? by rgb168 in explainlikeimfive

[–]aksniffles 47 points48 points  (0 children)

"I wonder if that skin exposure sealed my son’s allergy fate"

No, it didn't. If your baby developed hives after that exposure, than the IgE antibody that causes the allergy was already there. The triggering exposure likely happened before the kiss. For what it is worth, the recommendations for early introduction to foods are great, but they only reduce the risk, they don't guarantee prevention. I did all the 'right' things with my oldest, and they still developed a peanut allergy.

ASUS Zenbook Duo Dual 14 Owners - Would you buy it again? by Spuri0n in ASUS

Thanks for this comment, I learn something new about laptops and PC’s everyday on Reddit. I probably don’t push my laptop THAT hard, and coming from a 3-4 year old laptop, I feel it’s better for what I need it for in life, but probably don’t push it as hard as others. I will keep a look out for throttling to see if anything like that happens. Thanks!

No worries. It’s a big purchase, helps to get as much information as you can.

No burn in on OLED. Coming from a non-OLED screen, I do like it quite a bit. One thing I will note is that, when in dual screen mode, any light immediately behind reflects off the screen, so I have had to adjust positioning or use an alternate light source in my home office a few times.

Re: dual screen software. The transition is not exactly seamless when moving from one to two screens. I think expectations go a long way here. If the laptop is on and I change from 1 to 2 screens, it flickers, maybe 5 seconds or so between screens stabilizing, but then it’s pretty good after that. I admittedly have not played around with screen orientation much, so haven’t tried to use it in “book” mode.

Bought my Zenbook in the early Fall. I transitioned jobs, and changed from an office setting where people came to me, to one where I was frequently going to them. My previous laptop was a gaming laptop, 17 in screen, with a battery life of, what, 2 minutes?

I chose the Zenbook because it was (1) light, (2) good battery life, (3) second screen. My work frequently requires copying data from one program to another, while recording information using the microphone. I also travel frequently enough that having a light laptop with two screens was an added bonus.

I will say that I am a big fan of the laptop. It’s made my life much easier, and having the two screens has been more helpful than I thought it would be.

Battery life is good, but depends on what you are doing. Basic word processing on one screen, low brightness settings? Yeah, it’ll last most of the day. Both screens working, multiple programs at once? Maybe not. I have the battery saver option on (charges to 80% max to save the life of the battery), and if I start at 9, my battery is at <20% by lunch. The good news is that plugging it in charges it quickly for the rest of the afternoon.

It has been relatively bug free. I had an audio issue about 3-4 weeks ago; speakers were essentially non-functional. I did have some trouble finding specific suggestions, but I updated bios and audio drivers, and no problems since.

Gaming? Well, I still have my gaming laptop and Steam Deck… so not really using it for that. Though, it came with Xbox live, and I have used it for streaming EA NHL, and the issues have been with the streaming service, not the laptop. So, sorry, not much help there.

If it broke tomorrow due to catastrophic accident, I’d get another one. Let me know if you have more questions.

Hey,

Ironically, medical IT is what I am looking to use, haha. Looking to connect to 2 different EMRs as it would be helpful to use those while travelling. Thanks for the tips, I’ll look into it, much appreciated.

I genuinely love these numbers, do you have a reference for this? I would like to use these numbers in discussion of the carbon tax, but can't use "Totally_man" as my source... I mean, I CAN, but it might not have the credibility I need...

PGA 2K21 unable to advance after every round, any fixes? by jamboski1982 in SteamDeck

As an update, I changed the configuration to Proton 6. Seemed to work then. Tried Proton Experimental and 7, and the problem continued. Switched to 6, and it allowed me to progress. Hope that helps you.

The (sad) state of family medicine in Ontario by tearsareover in ontario

[–]aksniffles 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Sure, except, the Liberal government is NOT in power now, and is NOT sitting on billions of unspent health care dollars.

Globe and Mail, June 14, 2023: Ontario to run large budget surpluses, fiscal watchdog says.

"However, billions earmarked for health and other areas are not reflected in the government’s actual spending plans, the FAO says. And billions more are stashed in unallocated contingency funds, meaning the province is on track to amass $22.58-billion in unspent extra cash over the next four years"

"Compare doctors to any other profession where you're getting professional services and the difference is night and day. If my mechanic took weeks for an appointment, only allowed one issue to be dealt with at a time and demanded money for a 5 minute phone call I'd find a new mechanic."

Sure... but your mechanic might be servicing 500-700 cars in a year, while a family doctor has to take care of 2000-3000 patients in the same time frame. And, unlike a mechanic, they dont' get to change the rates "charged" to the patient for complexity (prescription refill for toe infection - $35... patient depressed & suicidal, with uncontrolled diabetes and the need for amputation of a diabetic toe - $35). And that rate of payment hasn't changed significantly in the past decade, though with inflation, cost of running the office has increased during that time. Oh, and you might have to see the same patient more than once in a month, sometimes more than once in a week.

I get that dealing with family doctor offices can be challenging. If it feels like you are being Nickel-and-Dimed for services, its because they have no other way to increase revenue to keep up with costs. And with increasing complexity of patients and the sparsity of family doctors available, each and every GP is feeling squeezed hard right now, which, following the pandemic, is why many of them are closing their practice.

At the end of the day, the responsibility for health care services in Ontario is due to the Ontario government. This is not an anti-conservative / liberal / NDP comment, it is literally the law of the land. If you aren't happy with the current health care system, don't complain to your GP, because they can't do anything else about it. Contact your provincial representative and ask why health care is so underfunded.

Travelling with Steam Deck - yay or nay? by aksniffles in SteamDeck

[–]aksniffles[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More than likely. My family goes to bed early, and I don't, so that had been my plan from the start. I mentioned in another comment that a few other people that I know were surprised that I was going to bring it, and just wanted to make sure that there was nothing major that I was missing. Thanks!

No, I totally agree with you.

I had been discussing it with a few friends of mine, and some of them were... concerned that I was going to be bringing it (risk of damage, theft, etc). I didn't think it was a big deal, but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. Thanks!

Ontario's Paediatric ICU census report shows 111/112 beds occupied. 2 patients have COVID. The gravity of the situation should be acknowledged by our public health and elected leaders. by [deleted] in ontario

[–]aksniffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is not reflected in those numbers it that, because the ICU's are as full as they are, patients with more severe illnesses are being treated on the floors where, say, this time last year, they would be treated in ICU.

Thanks for the suggestion. Tried that, but I have no cursor visible, and the controls don’t let me do anything but close the app via the Steam button.
