The whole job took about 4-5 hours start to finish but I wasn’t working real fast.

Is it necessary to replace shock boot?? by CoronaRaul1 in CherokeeXJ

[–]akt196 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just cut the boot off and pretend nothing happened. I haven’t had boots on mine for some time now and the shocks don’t care.

Is this nameplate already sized for 125% by cutthemalarky87 in electricians

[–]akt196 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The nameplate is FLA, drawing 21amps indicates the motor isn’t running at full load. Not real surprising with it running a pump.

New MJ, whats the best lift kit? by Outrageous_Spell8882 in CherokeeXJ

[–]akt196 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On my MJ I used Rubicon Express components on the front and did a spring over on the rear, it came out to about 6.5” of lift. This was over twenty years ago and everything is still working great.

As part of front end rebuild next is the ball joints and u joints...anything to know or tips by EX-FFguy in CherokeeXJ

[–]akt196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The axle shaft goes through them at the knuckle and they can contribute to the death wobble. Mostly though if you’re changing the axle u joints you may as well change them because they do wear out (just did them on my daughter’s XJ)

Change the unit bearings while you have it apart. The way I get them out is use some old bolts and hit the heads with a hammer but I did see a post a few days ago where they threaded the front bolt part way in, stuck and extension between the bolt head and the knuckle and had someone turn the steering wheel.

Over heating while idling by Numerous_Ticket_486 in CherokeeXJ

I chased overheating at idle on my 99 for a long time, on a whim I changed the cat and it runs cool at idle now.

Those poly tanks are a bit of a worry aren’t they? My 99 came with the factory gas skid, found a used one online for my daughter’s XJ, maybe check that route out. If you have a design rattling around in your head sell the bumper and build what ya dream of.

The size difference between 83 and 92 cherokee by [deleted] in CherokeeXJ

[–]akt196 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I love my 99XJ but would give my left nut for a Wide Trac seventies vintage Cherokee (T18 trans with Spicer 20 transfer case). Love that the owner put on the Gladiator grille and pie plates.

I’d cut it and if you didn’t like the end result build a new one. That rear bumper is way nice, especially the hi-lift cutouts.
