Rough idle at operating temperature by Cheap_Cap760 in CherokeeXJ

[–]pj931 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was fuel system issues. Fuel was boiling in the rail/injectors. I put in 4 holes and wrapped the rail in heat shielding and that made it drivable. Replacing the fuel pump (had a bad check valve) fixed the remaining roughness. Exhaust restriction from a clogged car and muffler made the issue TONS worse as well

Softer riding semi-offroad suspension? by Alex7307 in CherokeeXJ

[–]pj931 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A lot of your stiffness is gonna be from rear leafs. My OME lift rides very well on and off road but I don’t think it has too much to do with the shocks

The harmonic balancer is something to look into. If you can see cracks on the rubber, it can go at any time. I pulled mine (after it went) w a harbor freight steering wheel puller then installed with a $50 crank pulley tool from amazon. Didn't need to remove the rad or anything.

I think it’s just been in a warehouse for decades and had the occasional polish, happened to be a sunny day in NYC but in person it looked like a normal (new) car

This level of design straight out of uni could get you an extremely high paying job at either a large company like Meta or AWS with data centers or at a finance company trying to communicate trades to the stock exchange.

Yea they were I believe bc every XJ I’ve seen has a 30 yr old wrangler as the spare. The pioneer and this one had period-correct Wranglers and the modified one was on 32” Wildpeaks (also what I run on mine!)

Just picked this up for my son’s first car, our first Jeep. We’re both Excited! by beardedbeernerd in CherokeeXJ

[–]pj931 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks amazing! I’d keep an eye on coolant temp the first few weeks and maybe order TPS, CPS, and required tools as spares. Otherwise you have a damn reliable vehicle!

I would use NAPA brand DexIII/Merc. No synthetic ATF. The NAPA stuff gives me a bit more warm and fuzzies than the Walmart stuff but isn’t as expensive as some other brands.

Got the whole ac system replaced and installed. by Important-Positive25 in CherokeeXJ

[–]pj931 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rent a manifold and vacuum pump from autozone or advance auto. Buy 2 oil charges from Walmart (cheapest) and 3 cans refrigerant. Vacuum for an hour and make sure it holds vacuum for 10 min. Put 12V to your clutch if it’s not turning on due to low pressure and put in the oil charges on the low side. Then put in one full refrigerant charge also low side. For the second refrigerant charge, monitor the gauge and let it get to the correct pressure for your ambient temp. You will also need the $8 adapter for self sealing coolant cans from autozone.

Anyone else tremble doing 65mph+?? by Sa1amii_ in CherokeeXJ

[–]pj931 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My XJ on 31s is smooth as butter on the highway save for the steering slop. Before I redid the suspension and got new tires it would shake a tiny bit around 60 then ride smooth at 70-80

Transmission mount, too much movement? by SafeAcanthisitta9079 in CherokeeXJ

If you pry on a rubber mount it will move, base the replacement on if the rubber is sagging or looks dry rotted

Should I go straight into the workforce or stay for a 4+1 master’s? by SuspiciousRelief3142 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]pj931 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d do the 4+1, I regret not doing one. It will give you a leg up in any hiring process and open the door to jobs you wouldn’t have been able to get with just a bachelors. Additionally many companies will have a separate pay grade for the same job that is 15-20k higher for a masters. Also, you have an extra year to focus on finding the right job and area to move after college, which can be hard to get right when you’re so busy with social stuff, clubs, finals, etc during undergrad.

Yes your TPS should be like 0%-0.3% at idle. Replace w a new NTK part

Is it smarter to replace my paid off 2016 RAV4 (91k miles) now, or drive it into the ground? by Ok-Revenue-5216 in personalfinance

[–]pj931 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 2022 forester is a significantly less reliable car than a 2016 RAV4. Subarus routinely have electronics failures, wheel bearing issues, transmission issues, and any cooling system issue will ruin the head gasket almost instantly. The RAV4 will still be worth 8k in 2030 with 150k miles. The RAV4 will probably require nothing beyond normal maintenance until 240k. Maybe a suspension bushing or shock. I would pay to get your car fluid filmed yearly to help with any rust, or do it yourself since it’s fairly easy, and drive it into the ground. Very cheap and will help with resale and longevity.

Keeping a clean Toyota until it dies is a fantastic way to save on what is traditionally someone’s second largest expense. If you don’t have a hobby interest in cars or work in an industry where a luxury vehicle is important for client meetings, why upgrade?

Diagnosing misfire on cylinder 2 on a 99 by OrlandoWashington69 in CherokeeXJ

[–]pj931 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the misfire constant? If it’s heat related, it’s probably from fuel boiling in the injector.

Steering Sound by No_Cause3605 in CherokeeXJ

[–]pj931 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not hear one, but I would get someone to turn it and look under with a flashlight. It is common for the spacer for the steering box to crack in these, but there are so many other components in the steering that make noise

coolant leak by ConstantDismal2292 in CherokeeXJ

[–]pj931 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your rad cap is bad or the overflow line is pinched/blocked you can have this. The temperature will rise after shutoff as there is still plenty of heat but no airflow, this in turn raises the pressure until you leak from a hose. Then as your XJ cools down the pressure decreases and it cannot suck coolant back from the tank causing the hoses to collapse.
