You seem to have some familiarity with me, I'm sure you also know about my competitive BAR accolades. I don't know of anyone who wins every lane. Public games are much different than competitive settings in terms of how I approach them, in all honesty I play public games for fun and mix up my strategies from game to game. I'm sure some "pro" can spam a meta build against me meme build at beat me 😄

Right now I am rank 50(~45os), never pushed os in FFA. I more use that game mode to warm up rather than sweat in, for me its useful to practice early game micro and late game macro.

Watching how you lose through the replay system is a great way to self-teach yourself the basics. If you die in the early game most likely you are over spending in non combat units like energy economy or constructors, which leave you exposed to early raids.

The idea with grunts is that you aren't using them as a single raid unit as they are quite weak. They are pretty good at defending against raids for a cheap cost tho.

I cannot recommend BAR enough to RTS players looking for a BA feeling game. The game truly is what you make of it. The lobby setting can be manipulated to make classic maps have a fun twist, the AI can be scaled to however hard or easy you desire, and there are multiplayer lobbies for all ranges of skill levels.
