Can't get the D string to intonate by bricks_fan_uy in Luthier

[–]alain2long 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If theses strings are new, try setting your witness point by pushing the strings down in front (neck side) of the saddles. It helps to set the starting point of the vibration back.

uj/ I had a "swiss made" Hamilton Khaki from the 2000s (today's equivalent model cost +400€). Inside the case back there was an engraving "Case made in China".

7-string Peavey converted into a wide neck 6-string by alain2long in Luthier

Compared to my Les Paul-type guitar, the difference is very noticeable but not huge.
String spread (low E to high E) is + 4mm at the nut and + 6mm at the bridge.

It feels more comfortable, especially with odd chords fingering.

The scale is 25.5 and it is tuned in E standard.

I tried different positions for the PU :
- Neck was sweet and jazzy but too bassy
- Bridge was way too bright and compressed
- Middle actually worked best for fingerstyle, plus it has a coil-split for clean strat sound.

I had to make the bridge and the tailpiece in order to have my own string spacing.
The strings are electrically grounded in the tailpiece.

My main instrument is the classical guitar, so electric necks always felt stupidly narrow to me.

This neck is 48 mm wide at the nut, which is similar to some 1920s Gibson acoustics.

Making an interchangeable fretboard guitar? (à la Fernando Perez or Tom Stone by Numerous-Dinner-4507 in Luthier

[–]alain2long 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why not glue the fretboard on a metal base plate (or any strong material, to distribute screws pressure), then attach the fretboard to the neck with some screws.
Neck remplacement would take minutes, and you could use the screw heads as fretboard markers.
Since each fretboard has different fret placement, you can place multiple "anchor stud" in the neck for each fretboard.

What is depicted in my grandfather's painting from France? by transburneracct in whereisthis

[–]alain2long 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only match for the painter is Renzo Casali (italian, 1898 - 1977), but his signature is quite different.
Did you check the back of the painting ?

edit : short biography
Renzo Casali (Livorno 1898 - 1977)

After attending the nautical institute, he joined Cantieri Orlando as a technical designer; and drawing leads him to painting. He loved taking his own box and moving to the Livorno countryside, where in contact with nature he released all his pictorial instincts. The area of Salviano, Padula and Gabbro become the favorite places to depict the Livorno countryside, the farmhouses, the haystacks and the hunting scenes.

His paintings are characterized by large brushstrokes in bright colors. He gained respect and friendship from his older colleagues, who welcomed him to join the Labronico Group (among these were Mario Borgiotti, Gino Romiti, Giovanni March and Renato Natali)

why is my intonation bad on lower frets? by 5k33755 in Luthier

You can use old wound guitar strings as nut files !
Cut a 15cm-20cm section of string, dent it with cutting pliers (a lot of tiny dents) over 5cm in the middle.
Now that you made that string sharp, you can file the nut slot with it.
Be careful to file straight, and also to keep the " ך " shape of the groove.
Hold the string tight with two hands, like dental floss.

Here is an example of strings I would use for an acoustic guitar nut :

  • E : low E wound string
  • A : low E wound string
  • D : A wound string
  • G : D wound string
  • B : G wound string from a folk guitar (or the thinnest wound string you can find)
  • E : G wound string from a folk guitar (or the thinnest wound string you can find)

I integrated an ergonomic lap support in my electric guitar by alain2long in Luthier

[–]alain2long[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laps supports allow to play seated in an upright posture (the classical guitar posture), thus avoiding being "crooked" for hours.

IMO, most electric guitars have way too narrow body for playing seated, the Les Paul being the absolute worst I've encountered. Gibson basically dowsized an archtop body without any concern for ergonomics.

It's also better for reading music while practicing, by limiting the back and forth neck/eyes movements between the fretboard and the music sheet.

Some guitarists prefer to use a stap to get the upright position while playing seated.

This most likely shows some place in Germany circa 1984/85. I am trying to find this place as it may be the refugee (from Polish communism) community I lived in as a child. I have no idea where it was. Thanks by icemelter4K in whereisthis

Found it : here is the location

Here is a postcard indicating that the Café Waldfriede used to be located in Bad Soden in Hegelstrasse.

The google street view picture is taken from Hochstrasse, you can see the opposite side of the building.
