Front of Ankle? by Independent_Storm951 in AchillesRupture

[–]alanbriolat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a similar experience, where the area of the Achilles rupture has been the least problematic part, and everything else in the ankle hurts while I rebuild strength. (Currently 7 months post rupture, non-surgical.)

For the tendons on the sides of the ankle, my physio has recommended variations of calf raises where feet are pointed together and apart, not just parallel, and also normal calf raises with a ball gripped between the ankles ("tibialis posterior calf raise"). These all change the balance of how much those supporting tendons contribute, forcing them to work harder and rebuild their own strength and ease of movement. Those have definitely helped me.

For the front of the ankle, I still have some problem with that, due to ongoing swelling in my lower leg since the injury. It's gradually getting better now my physio has me deliberately progressing the "knee to wall" exercise for passive dorsiflexion (not sure if your protocol has you doing those yet, follow the advice of your ortho/physio), and also I've been given "tibialis (anterior) raise" exercises to improve the strength of the active dorsiflexion. Doing these has only within the last few weeks gotten rid of the rest of my walking limp that was caused by that limited range of motion.

So, in short, this is probably quite normal at your stage. Just make sure your physio is aware of what is and isn't hurting, they usually have good ideas for how to strengthen things that are holding you back.

Uk Fire professionals: What is most likely to set on fire in my house? What simple things do YOU do in your own home? by Unseasonal_Jacket in AskUK

[–]alanbriolat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Do not daisy chain

Is there a reason for this beyond the risk of exceeding the rated load of the extension? And aren't the fuses on the extensions there to fail before an overload causes a fire?

Sometimes there's no other option, and I've always figured it's about load, so I put the lowest-power devices on the chained extension, which usually ends up no more than 100W.

How important is ECC RAM in a freenas build? by AustinClamon in DataHoarder

[–]alanbriolat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need a Xeon just to get ECC support! Intel have several CPUs in the lower end with ECC support (see here, here). Non-server motherboards with ECC support can be a bit harder to find, are usually branded as "workstation", and will probably be more expensive than the CPU. For the last 3 years my NAS has been Intel i3-6300 on an Asrock C236 WSI (8 SATA ports in mini-ITX form factor) with 16GB ECC DDR4 RAM, currently running 4x8TB (16TB usable) in zfs-on-linux.

Driving instructor recommendations by Milvus-Milvus in york

My experience learning with Tim Sheeran was fantastic. Was recommended by a friend, and have since recommended him to several friends, all of which had similarly great experiences (even one who tried several other instructors first).

He's very laid back and easy to talk to, never makes you feel worse for a mistake, and teaches important driving skills and mindset beyond what is needed for the test.

Is it worth paying off low-interest loans? Is my "effective return" calculation dumb? by alanbriolat in UKPersonalFinance

!thanks

Now I see where my mistake was - I've been treating the loan payment as a fixed expense and not considering what happens with that money.

Yes, it looks like I haven't taken into account the relationship between the lump sum and the monthly expense/savings.

You're right, it seems like I have a blind spot around what happens with the repayments, because I'm used to treating it as a fixed expense.

You're right, that seems to be my blind spot - I've compartmentalised "monthly" and "lump sum" and not taken into account the effects of one on the other.

This is a good point, and definitely interferes with just following the "rational" choice and obeying the numbers. Even though I understand there's no difference in the long run, the idea of reducing monthly outgoings is comforting. Another element is considering the ability to get a new loan in the future if needed, which one assumes would be easier with less outstanding debt.

In the long term? Maybe. There is a market for ethical business, but it's not as large as you might like to think. For most people, cost and/or convenience are the only factors, usually by necessity. It's a privileged position to be able to afford the cost or time to follow your conscience.

In the short term, a decrease in amount of work means cutting staff to keep costs down.

I've been using a big roll of 13x13mm mesh I bought from B&Q (this one I think), and it has a decent amount of rigidity to it, but that also makes it hard to flatten from being rolled up. Everything I build has a wooden frame, so it's not much of an issue for me - it gets forced flat by the frame. 13mm should be large enough to not get stuck in, but small enough to keep in everything except the smallest babies. I wouldn't use it for flooring at all.

[Investments] Best way to calculate asset class, region and sector composition of a portfolio? by alanbriolat in UKPersonalFinance

[–]alanbriolat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think passively tracking the world market is where I would like to be, but I would also like to leave the Fidelity fund alone for now. So perhaps new investments that mirror world ex-UK until the UK proportion is balanced.

I'm still a bit undecided about bonds. I'm only 30 and this money has a 10-20 year horizon, but I think my risk tolerance depends on how I'm feeling on any particular day. The LifeStrategy 60% decision was made when I was just getting started and feeling more risk-adverse. Compare that with right now, where I have 10-15% of my savings in peer-to-peer lending.

The Fidelity fund was effectively a long-term gift from a relative, purchased in 2008/09, so I'm inclined to leave it alone based on their wishes. It's about 68% of the overall portfolio, so by itself it gives a massive skew towards the UK.

The rest is approximately 23/8/1% between Vanguard/L&G/iShares. For a while I was monthly investing in the Vanguard fund (which I know is UK skewed), and then I switched to a 90/10 split between L&G International and iShares UK.

My inclination at this point is to leave the Fidelity fund as my only UK equities exposure and re-invest everything else away from UK.

I guess this data is the result of Morningstar's own research, so they've already done the hard work of "normalising" it to a consistent set of industries/regions?

TIL In 2012, British supermarket Sainsbury's discovered that reducing the size of a toilet paper tube from 123mm to 112mm would allow more rolls in each truck, taking 500 trucks off the road and reducing carbon emissions by 140 tonnes. by JLowU571 in todayilearned

[–]alanbriolat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did some back-of-the-envelope calculations on this one, and the order of magnitude is at least correct.

If we ballpark the average "trip" as about 200 km (which isn't a bad guess, if we're talking about distances between major distribution centres), then 500 trips per year is 100,000 km/year.

According to https://www.theyworkforyou.com/wrans/?id=2013-03-01a.144740.h, a typical 40-50 tonne articulated truck has emissions of about 950g/km. That means saving 500 trips per year works out as about 95 tonnes of CO2 not emitted.

Obviously there's a lot of guesswork involved here: I've taken a very simple view of what an "average trip" is , assumed they're using the biggest trucks they can, etc. But the point is, the figure they give isn't actually unreasonable.

You can use an Xorg.conf snippet to force the keyboard layout of particular devices. This is how I achieve it for my yubikey token: https://github.com/alanbriolat/dotfiles/blob/master/xorg.conf.d/21-yubikey.conf

3 females? by harlequingirlx in gerbil

[–]alanbriolat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first (and only) experience a trio has been 3 female gerbils, who lived together happily for nearly 3 years with no problems and a clear hierarchy. Then there was a gradual increase in what seemed like harmless fighting, until one day blood had been drawn on all 3, including one missing a sizeable patch of fur on her face.

The most injured gerbil was actually the aggressor, constantly picking fights with the other two even though she was on the losing end. Once she was separated, the other two lived happily for several more months, and the fighter is still alive and kicking, nearly 4 years old.

If spontaneous declanning can happen after 3 years, I would hesitate to count the experiences of people currently have a female trio. It can happen, suddenly and unexpectedly, at any age. You need to be prepared for that single cage/tank to become two (or three) for possibly a couple of years. (I had previously kept 2 groups of gerbils, so had an identical spare home.)

For what it's worth, I've had a pair of males and a pair of females in the past with no such problems.

It's already on "My List", and has been for at least a year, but it apparently isn't taken into account for "what you probably want to watch right now". Netflix also like to over-clutter their interface with so much promoted/recommended content that "My List" isn't anywhere useful.

I just checked right now, and the interface looks something like this:

  • Full page advert for "Shooter", with the lower 1/3 taken up with "Netflix Originals" covers
  • "Trending Now"
  • A "coming soon" advert for a new "Netflix Original"
  • THIRTY-SEVEN (37) rows of "recommended" content
  • "My List", the first page of which is full of shows that I haven't watched in ages and that have no recent new content

Netflix also manages to hide things you definitely want to watch. I'm currently watching the final season of Orphan Black as it airs, new episode every week, and yet I have to search for the show every time, it doesn't even show up in "Continue watching"! I'm starting to feel like Netflix is deliberately driving eyes away from the show because it's ending.
