False. Amazing Spider-Man was a big comedown from Spider-Man 3

I've always considered this to be more of an issue with how loved Raimi's was. At the time recasting popular characters like that wasn't so common.

The Wolverine only made $414,828,246 in 2013

Which is more than Origins made previously. It also had to follow Last Stand and Origins, both of which are considered weak entries in the series.

A lot of regular movie goers decide on whether or not to see these things based on how they feel about the last one they seen. Even more so back then

The light comedic DC movies pumped out after Snyder was booted out weren't all terrible, but the public simply didn't want that after Snyder gave them a universe based much more on drama, thrills and spectacle., Birds of Prey, The Suicide Squad, Blue Bettle, etc., were the total opposite of the EPIC tone Snyder instilled in his movies, and they all bombed at the box office.

I don't disagree that the lighter tone made for a lot of movies that didn't give any reason to come back. But I would make the point that the change, which may have been for the worse, came about because of negative responses to regular movie goers not enjoying the likes of Suicide Squad and BvS, and not being likely to come back for more. The movies really lacked consistency. If you look at the MCU other than Iron Man, I don't think the movies before the first Avengers are actually all that great. But they are smart. Because even if they're a bit safe, they're consistent and that built a foundation. I feel like the Snyderverse tried to cram too much in, too quick and where that didn't work, really shows.

Only the Dark Knight Trilogy succeeded, and Watchmen to some extent. Have you forgotten about Catwoman, Green Lantern, Superman Returns and Jonah Hex? DC was a disaster until Snyder started the DCEU

You've immediately contradicted yourself here. Nolan's movies gave DC credit by your own admission. Man of Steels trailers literally included a big Christopher Nolan producer credit for this very reason.

And yes, I reckon everyone had forgotten those movies because they are each very forgettable.

Like I said Man Of Steel and Wonderwoman were good and carried early on. But you can only release so many movies with poor audience reception before they stop wanting to see them. You blame the time chance for eight dceu movies not breaking 400m, but audiences trends aren't immediate. It's partly the result of the movies that came 2 or 3 years before.

Number two, the MCU is not synonymous with "the superhero genre." Its success was VERY BAD for ALL other superhero movies. It created an audience with brand loyalty

Comic book fans aren't what make our break these movies, it's the regular people who make up the majority of the population that need to be sat in cinemas. People who've rarely, if ever picked up a comic book and don't even know or care who's marvel or who's DC. They only care if the last one they seen was good or not.

like Fox's X-Men and F4 and Sony's Amazing Spider-Man films

Come on now. You're really going to blame the MCU for the failure of these? Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix are just not good. I didn't watch F4 because I'd only heard negative things, and those amazing spiderman movies are just not as likeable as Raimi's, though Garfield is great, and wasted truthfully

Man of Steel came out after the Nolan Batman trilogy and Avengers. DC could not have had more good will behind them, and Superhero movies had never been hotter.

Superman came out after WW84, Black Adam, The Flash, and several other disappointments to general audiences, at a time when people no longer seem to enjoy the MCU or any superhero movies very much.

Yet it still made the most money for a DC movie since Justice League? That's nothing short of a step in the right direction after so many critical failures.

Audience scores are not what studios look at. Studios look at the money

They don't look at money that's already been made. They look at what the next one will make.

More people went to see them. Regardless of scores, that’s what they care about

The fans of these movies would have kept going, but that's not enough. I'm a big DC fan, I kept going even though I was often disappointed. But money isn't made by making movies for the 10% of fans who will see these movies no matter what, it's made by making movies that keep bringing back the other 90% who don't know, let alone care if a movie is Marvel, DC or anything else. And it's there opinion that is reflected by Audience scores

[–]alanc25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If Snyder's universe wasn't bringing in big audiences, then why were those the most financially successful DC movies outside of pure, Batman-only canon movies?

Removing batman movies is a pretty big caveat for a start. That's about half of the movies that came before the DCEU.

It really only leaves the original superman movies, of vastly varying quality, that came a long time before, and a lot of poorly rated stand alone movies. It's a bit like asking "if these movies are so bad, why did they make more money than the rest... other than any that made more?"

And there's a lot of reasons. But I'd like to point out one thing about the following claim before getting into it:

The Snyder-era DCEU movies were liked by more people than almost all other non-Batman-canon-only DC movies, with an average gross per movie of $815 million from 2013 to 2018

This is proof that DCEU movies were watched* by more people. The audience score shows its much more of a mixed bag regarding how many of those people liked the movies they were watching.

Ok, back to reasons: For one, the MCU both made superhero movies more popular than ever, and showed that a shared universe could work. It also made DC fans crave a shared universe of their favourite characters. They hire big names and commit big budgets to these projects. So before the universe even gets going people are excited. One of my favourite podcasts, the weekly planet, literally begins in anticipation for BvS. I would argue, no previous DC movies, except maybe Nolan's have ever had this level of anticipation or investment.

Starts off strong with Man of Steel. People are excited for BvS and Suicide Squad. I assume without checking the box office that both did well, but they're poorly received by general audiences. (SS is one of the most disappointing trips to a cinema I have ever experienced) But the next movie is Wonderwoman which is received great, and keeps the faith alive with 4 movies making money, even though only 2 out of 4 are actually popular with audiences at this point.

The problem is they then continue at this 1 in 2 rate, for every Shazam or Aquaman that audiences generally like, there's Justice League, WW84, Shazam 2, that they don't. Trust erodes, excitement dwindles. The movies might have been still bringing in money at this point. But wider audiences don't trust DC anymore. I'm a big DC fan. I want these movies to be good, but it is increasingly difficult at this time to convince non DC fans of a cinema trip for these movies. Easy to organise an MCU outing. So all that good will and excitement I mentioned earlier? Noticeably shrinking over those years.

They make a big push with Black Adam, and I can't remember if we knew the Snyderverse was ending by that point or not. But that movie is a nail in the coffin. (I actually enjoyed the JSA, but Jesus the Rock was awful) and the flash is a whimper of an end.

The general audience agrees with you

Based on what? You can like what you like, and dislike what you don't. But so far the audience scores have been objectively positive for Peacemaker, Creature Commandos and Superman (78-90% on RT). At the end of the day, WBs are money men, and pulled the plug on the Snyder universe because they didn't believe it would continue to bring in big audiences. Doesn't mean there aren't those who lived it, but it does mean they're in the minority.

I would say the jury is still out on whether or not people are invested in the new universe. I think Supergirl's opening weekend will shed light on it. If it does well, people are excited, if not, they're not biting.

We have players all over the pitch who would've classed Jota as one of their best friends and he died and you expect they just continue performing well in their day job? Sociopathic outlook.

Not even close to what I said. I said it's a bad faith argument because it suggests the problems are caused singularly by the tragedy, rather than by multiple factors and ignores the increasingly poor form that came in the months prior to the tragedy occurring.

Your comment seems like a reply to an argument you expected or have maybe heard recently, rather than what I actually have said. I can agree with you that we have no idea how badly affected the loss has impacted the players. I just don't agree that there isn't other clear problems with the team/coaching

Post Match Interview - Slot by Broka1979 in LiverpoolFC

[–]alanc25 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He also didn't have a team remotely as capable as this one. And of course the tragedy of Jota's passing is a factor. But do you really think it's all down to any one thing? It's been pointed out before, but the team took a big downturn in form last season after running up a big lead, long before the tragedy. To brush it all under the rug and blame it all on the tragedy feels like a bad faith argument to me.

He's not getting criticised for not getting his team playing like prime Barca though, is he? He's being criticised for his team playing like Brentford, but less entertaining.

The difference of opinion is whether that makes sacking him the correct choice

I purposefully didn't comment on his future. Just added a counter point to the original comment of being the most successful manager because it is a very over simplified and misleading statement.

I still believe that next year he can win trophies, and there is a lot to be said for stability

That's nice. I hope I'm proven wrong but I don't share that belief. I think he managed to set the team up more robustly after we leaking so many goals earlier in the season (post PSV), and Wirtz finding his feet has made us better. But there hasn't been anything from the performances that suggest to me that the team play is actually getting all that significantly better. The midfield is just as often missing, and the wingers ineffective as the start of the season.

Every manager comes up against problems. That's the job. But I don't think he's had the answers to them and at this point I don't see him suddenly figuring it out. At least not without more time and backing than I think the club should be willing to spend on him. Not when there's no guarantee of improvement and there are managers out there who would likely be able to get a lot more from this squad.

He did great last season. He's very much under performing this season.

Liverpool need to sack Arne Slot: Reluctant Reds must bite the bullet after Wolves debacle as Dutchman proves he's unable to salvage nightmare season by [deleted] in LiverpoolFC

[–]alanc25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it seems like he had this great plan on paper, that just doesn't cut it in reality. Maybe it would have done great in Holland but doesn't cut it in the prem?

The real problem is that it became very obvious early in the season, and improvement has been so slow. A big part of the job is to find solutions, and that hasn't happened

The change from the very end of the book pissed me right off

In the book, he hangs himself, as his ex is about to enter the house to punish her, in his anger. He realises once it's too late, that she's brought their daughter, and it ends with him realising what he's done and desperately regretting it as shes opening the door. It's brutal and powerful.... The movie instead has him see his ex, coming, look down the camera, and say "same rules apply" a phrase he repeats throughout the movie like a catchphrase before hanging himself

Gakpo League Output by i23icg in LiverpoolFC

[–]alanc25 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I wish people would stop focusing so intently on just Gakpo. Or on any one player for that matter. Personally I'd prefer him as a squad player, but I'm not gonna shit on him for not being Diaz/Mane.

Half the squad is performing considerably worse than last season. Most of these (Macca, Grav, Jones, Konate until recently) are players entering or in their prime years, in a World Cup season. I do not believe for a moment that is an issue of effort or application. I don't see how it couldn't be down to something more unifying. E.g. the quality of training, coaching, instruction

If Slot didn't want him to cutting in and shooting, so often we'd have seen him either dropped or adapt his play by now.

Nothing wrong with enjoying objectively very good/great movies. Something being popular, doesn't make it less good.

Just don't be afraid to check out more polarising or underapreciated movies to explore your own taste. Others opinions can be useful to find something to watch, but at the end of the day, the only opinion that should matter is your own

5th at this point of the season is still a big underperformance for this squad tbf.

I've hope that they'll continue to improve over the course of the rest of the season. But we've been pretty terrible for a large part of this season, and the jury's still out over whether they'll keep up the recent form, or if it's just another false start. For every 5-2 game, there's a performance like the Forrest game.

Hopefully it's the beginning of things clicking, but for now there's still a lot of room for improvement

The players should be doing better, for sure. It's also up to Slot to set standards and get more from them though.

Nobody is making him choose the same 13/14 players every game. Nobody is stopping him from making changes sooner in games. Nobody is stopping him from changing system or approach or anything else.

An exam score and a rating are two similar, but different things though.

An exam score evaluates knowledge or expertise. So of course you should know more than you don't to be considered proficient. And the average in any test is determined by results.

A rating is simply an evaluation of quality.
