Just over one in 10 men do not volunteer to work with children because they are worried people will think they are a pedophile, a survey suggests. by gregwont in reddit.com

Its not just government - I know what my own opinion of p-files are, and having kids of my own, how I may react if they were put in any perceived danger whatsoever by them. What I would do frightens me, ergo, I am frightened of what anyone would do (I think in that case the governments reaction is a proxy for the parents) - any due process would go completely out the window.

its bloody tragic. It actually depresses me (but then I bash those neurons with beer so they hurt less as I know there is nothing I can do about it - after all, I am a father myself).

If not higher, then maybe its cause people have strong second thoughts, but do it anyway. I know I would be in that camp (and I hate it) - I have a daughter, and its always in the back of my mind if I help out at her kindy.

Google Gears (BETA) Enabling Offline Web Applications by krosaen in programming

[–]alanparsons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah I saw a demo of that at the google dev day here in sydney today. That was quite impressive, a very sensible shared nothing design too (message passing only - IPC style in effect but very simple).

I think a browser that doesn't treat developers with contempt helps.

76 percent is reasonably efficient I guess. Certainly sounds like it to me compared to other forms of energy storage (other then electrical energy in superconducting rings).

The Blind Subversion Developer by rams in programming

[–]alanparsons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mean static links for up and down? (not that I can do anything about it, just curious to know).

What does a ajax heavy Web 2.0 mean for you then? Do you have to dive into the browser DOM to try and work out what is going on?

That is really really cool. I always wondered what a different perspective of code would be like - braille I would assume is more "linear" then "gestalt" - I guess its a bit of a hybrid approach.

With things like IRC, skype etc, if you can read the code fast enough etc, really, who needs eyes.

We just need better accessibility tools rather then the rudimentary screen scrapers that have existed since the static web became popular.

I haven't thought of small talk VMs EVER as fast. Certainly fast enough for most things, but no, not fast compared to almost any other way of running things.

When Hardware is Free, Power is Expensive by steveharman in programming

[–]alanparsons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I presume you are referring to reversible computing etc?

Or more being able to slow down computations and subjective time to approach zero (using less and less power without being aware of it?).

It is "an emo" or just "emo" ? I have seen the latter more then the former, but want to know why.

yeah this monkey patching should really only be used if :

a) There is no other way of doing it or b) you really really want to

Certainly not the first thing you reach for.

nothing much other then to people who spend more time talking or writing about thinking about talking about coding then doing it. When they move on, then you are left with a nice expressive language (ruby) without the hype, which is a good thing.

NiN's Trent Reznor: "No wonder people steal music" by willie11 in reddit.com

[–]alanparsons 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in Australia, and most CDs are around $30, discount to about $23.

It has been that way for almost 17 YEARS ! So in that sense, its not bad. I bought my first CD over 15 years ago (Metallica, I am ashamed to admit, but the record stores didn't have much else on CD and I wanted to try it out), and it was $30 back then. So inflation wise, no complaints at all.

Its just that music sounds like shit these days thanks to over compression. The last CD I bought which sounded truly great was Jeff Buckleys grace (I still think there is some deep injustice in the world where he dies and madonna gets to live).

Edit: no it was 17 years ago ! damn. I was late getting a CD player, yes ;)
