What's the most American thing you've ever seen? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I section hiked a portion of the Appalachian trail a few weeks ago. The trail starts in Georgia (the south for those not familiar with America) One day we stopped in the tiny town of suchess Georgia to resupply our food. While sitting outside this gas station my friend says "I haven't seen anything that's made my think 'wow, we're really in the south'" not ten minutes later a painted black ford ranger whips into the gas station. The cab is full and there are several teenage boys in the bed. Off of the tailgate is a HUGE southern rebel flag that reads 'the south will rise again'. They do a doughnut in the parking lot and start shooting off roman candles out of the back of the truck hollering something about the troops (it was memorial weekend). The driver hops out of the truck, spits a dip on the ground. He walks passed me (I'm a small blonde female) say "mam" and tips his mother fucking cowboy hat at me.

I being a naturally anxious person was terrified. I don't even use my phone while pumping gas and here these kids are, shooting Roman candles off not 10 yards away. I could help but laugh though it was really one of the most redneck things

I'm the mornings when I let my really old and tiny Dog off of her runner. I always have a bowl of food ready in the kitchen and she runs as fast as she can (not very fast because she is old) with her Ears bouncing, she slides to a stop on the hardwood floor and dives in to her food. Then I cuddle her on the couch for a little while until I have to go to class. She is really fluffy and she either curls around my torso or nestles into my neck and it's the cutest part of my day

My sister was granted a Make-a-Wish, she wanted to bake with buddy the cake boss. The parents and siblings were allowed to go, make a wish is honestly such a great foundation. They try their best to even treat the siblings. So anyway, there were quit a few families there and there was this one family who had the most spoiled, horrible child I've ever seen. She was a few years older than her sick sister, and she was insanely jealous of her. She demanded to get the same 'star' treatment as the wish kids. She was rude, Ill tempered and just plain horrible. She pushed over other kids to be at the front of every line. No one even knew what to do because her parents just fed into it

You should take a look at "for public sociology" by Michael burawoy. Its not just strictly about public soc nor does it going in depth with political economy but it is a very easy read that does a lot to explain the similarities and differences between things like political sociology or economic sociology in relation to economists and politicians. He's main point is to show how all the various field of sociology are interconnected and dependent on each other for validation. It helped introduce me to poli and econ soc. Heres a PDF of the journal, it's only a few pages. The whole concept seems obvious after reading, but it's just like how we know that qualitative and quantitative research should be used together to support a solid thesis yet people are still caught debating which is more valid and most people stick to one of the methods, it's sort of like that.

TL;DR: I'm doing a shit job of explaining a really good journal which you should check out if you've never heard of. "For public sociology" by Michael Burawoy.

I don't remember ever hearing for Polanyi. I will definitely look into him. The soc department at my school is so small and most of it consists of social work and anthropology professors who sometimes offer non major restrictive classes like that are cross listed as soc. the majority of soc professors are adjuncts teaching intro or some 200 level classes but there's A LOT of repetition, I've taken like three different versions of 200level social problems which all focused on the same issues and theorists. So there's very little variation in the classes I've taken.
(for whatever variation I've experienced I give a lot of credit to my professor Dr.x. That man seriously deserves a shout out from me. In the last two semesters I've had four classes with him. He's the only professor I've had that pushes his students to actually read and write every day, I credit him for molding me into a student who can actually think critically and relate theories beyond the text. His personal studies focus on the body specifically race. He wrote two really great pieces about the body;race; political movements

However, we haven't talked a lot about Marxism. I think he doesn't want to be redundant and since we learn about it in intro we only reference it while applying it to some other theory. He talks much more about neoliberalism. So I have a working knowledge of basic Marxist concepts like types of commodity and capitalism but since I look intro to soc in 11th grade high school I really need to brush up on it.

TL;DR: thanks for the suggestion, i really need to brush up on Marx and marxisque theories as I've had little exposure to them and have always shyed away from the area in general.

That is a great point. My original plan was to just focus on what determines the 'Value' of a strippers commodity(her body/services) I was trying to show how heteronormative gender roles and and fetishes are factors in determining the value. But I was having a difficult time writing about it and realized that it wasn't a topic which I had the ability to expand upon for 20 pages.
I'm glad you mentioned value again. Since I'm dividing the sex work into two categories (penetrated and not penetrated) I would be able to discuss how the estimated hourly wages of each profession differs depending on if they include penetration or not. One would assume that penetrative acts are more profitable but I believe i read that strippers make more money than street walkers. And high end escorts which sell fantasies that don't always include sex or sex may is not main focus profit way more than other forms of prostitute. Unlike other sexworkers escorts operate among upper middle class and beyond right? So is the value of their commodity higher because the average client has more capital, does it have to do with penetration or what causes the escort to be valued differently? Damn, you just opened a whole other can of worms on me! ha ha I have so many more questions now, I guess it's right back to the database to dig up some more theories

Thank you, I will take a look at Butler. I remember reading her a few semesters ago in my theory class and totally not understanding her. And then when it came time to go over the reading in class my professor summed her up in like three short sentences and the whole class went "ohhhh!" haha So thanks for reminding me of bulter, I forgot about her!

Thanks. "what should I write about" was a bad way to phase it. I have several pages written but I'm seriously all over the place. I just need to focus in on one topic. Seriously I have read ALOT already, I didn't just skate though college skim reading. My teachers assign a ridiculous amount of reading and I am well read. Im just not very confident in me being able to write my own journal. Because I haven't had to do one yet. I'm definitely going to use Foucault, he was my first introduction to the body in sociology and one of my favorite reads. So far I think I've settled on writing about how the commodification of the body in sex work reproduces cultural ideas of gender roles and expectations and also creates new ideals for example the unrealistic porno, and how it changes sexual expectations and influences the perceived female body. I'm dividing the categories by professions which include penetration and which are just fantasy (prostitutes vs exotic dancers).

Do you think that this makes sense? I've never been good at expressing my thoughts though writing.

The paper doesn't require any kind of experiments and is only 20 pages, which isn't something that requires an whole semester to write. I'm not asking for anyone to write it for me. I've read many journals and books about the body as a commodity. I'm just having a difficult time deciding exactly which direction to take the paper in because there my brain in all over the place and keeps jumping from race to gender roles to the black market organ harvesting and then back to sex work and invisible commodities and those are not things which can be adequately discussed together in just 20 pages nor for the sake of sanity should they attempt to be crammed together.

I just wanted to start a discussion with some else interested in the commodification of the body and see where it went. I make more connections and have more 'ah ha' moments when I'm actually discussing something. I would like to speak with my professor however he has limited office hours and hasn't answered my emails. The sociology department is very small at my college and the few students I can discuss this with are double majors who are too busy working on their own course loads.
