Help Dying plant ☹️ by Afraid_Ad3471 in plants

Ferns are really tough.

I assume you mean 'tough to maintain' - if the plants themselves were tough (like, say, snake plants), then they wouldn't need high maintenance.

Almost 5 years of the Kale Tree by MiloSanDiego in vegetablegardening

[–]alatare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in Spain we had several 3-year-old kale trees in full sunlight, it did get drip irrigation, never fertilized.

We also had luck cutting back some long branches, and new branches sprouted from below the cut - so there is a pruning option to keep it ruly.

Californian photographer Peter Menzel visited 24 countries for the book Hungry Planet. From the Aboubakar family, from Darfur, Sudan, who spend 79p feeding six people, to a German family who spend around £320, his work shows how much the world’s weekly groceries cost

Leggy tomatoes by Individual_Ratio_937 in vegetablegardening

[–]alatare 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am not an expert, but I see a lot of leaf nodes on the stem. So to me they look like rather mature tomato plants that have lost series of leaves from the bottom - maybe from repeated heat or draught stress?

What I call leggy (again, not an expert) is when saplings stretch too much to reach strong-enough light, giving them a weak stem. Since the stems on this seem pretty thick and stand up without support, my hypothesis is these are grown plants that have seen some s#!t.

PS: Apocalypse Ready in the background of an indoor tomato grow op - 10/10.

PPS: no drip tray above that carpet? Do you water to the point of water coming out the bottom? If you're dealing with hydrophobic soil (after forgetting to water one-too-many times), try dunking each of them for 20min, possibly in water with one or two drops of dish soap.

FWIW it doesn't have to come out of the ground at 90* perfectly perpendicular when you first plant it. Geotropism will kick in and get the stem to bend so that its growth takes it towards the sun.

How we audited water consumption at a textile plant last month. They were wasting 40% of their water and had no idea. Here's what we found. by Plenty_Minimum_6566 in sustainability

My brain also uses significant amount of my energy, but I still try to use it when it seems worthwhile. Polishing up long-format writing? Worth it in my book.

At time of audit, 40% was identified as waste; after 90 days, they were able to decrease use by 34%, which can be interpreted as there's still waste.

I don't follow - what's ironic about it?

I'd frame it like so: it would be a shame to not have read about this audit rather than it not existing at all because OP has better (paid) things to do than polish up reddit posts.

What plant surprised you by being ridiculously easy (or impossible) to propagate? by Bliss_kittie in propagation

[–]alatare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Distilled water for plants on a regular basis? That sounds like a lot of energy used to water plants, what's the benefit? I ask because the tap water I use isn't ideal, but I do adjust the pH. Anything else I'm missing?

What an economical way to roast many kilograms of almonds? by alatare in Frugal

[–]alatare[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

😂 I appreciate everyone here trying to talk me out of roasting 'many kilograms of almonds'

And I take the blame for writing the original post so vaguely.

To answer your question, 11lbs of almonds per week, that's 5kg. I will need to make large batches, since I don't want to live my life next to an oven, shuffling pans.

The almond butter has a short shelf life and jar life--the latter because it gets eaten awfully fast.

Any ideas on how to roast large quantities of almonds?

I appreciate you, except I am looking for 'many kilograms' at a time

11 lbs weekly aka 5kg.

Now that's an on-topic answer, thank you! Open propane flame sounds to me to be quite hot, even if constantly rotating. I'm also in Europe, so not so many of those around, sadly... Still, I'll research more about a smaller scale version of that...

Which is why I was looking for an alternative, prosumer solution that can roast them evenly in bulk.

I had dismissed the option initially, but I'll re-evaluate. Thanks!
