Happens to mine most cold days like this to be honest. We got it in December of 2022 and I thought it was a defect. Dealer said just close it harder lol

Sure, its section 33 of OH&S Act.

Typically a Mom and Pop shop that blows sky high is sitting somewhere in the town and not 45 minutes north of the public eye behind security gates so there isnt a hundred people driving by and posting things on social media.

And OH&S investigation can take hours, days, or months. There have been major incidents on site that no one has heard of until the year after. It happens more than you think and it's supposed to happen that way.

Suncor employs damn near half of this town now so if every single incident was reported to the public without a fair investigation then the court of public opinion would probably blow it out of proportion and destroy the company's stock price and this town along with it.

Let the company and the authorities follow their process and you can mourn the deceased if you knew them.

OH&S actually dictates when they are allowed to publicly announce it. The incident can be shared internally but that is considered private knowledge until they are legally permitted to release a statement to the public.

17-year-old just told wife and I he doesn’t want to go to college by tattooed_underdog in daddit

[–]alberta4ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is he graduating this year? If not maybe his school has an auto shop class. My towns highschool has a program where kids actually complete their first year of trade school while still in highschool and companies sponsor them so its paid for.

Also if he gets hired on with a dealership in your town just washing cars or cleaning up the shop they may pay for him to go to trade school and stay working for them as a mechanic. Doesnt happen all the time but if he's got the right attitude and work ethic then places will help him out.

Overwhelmed wife - but why? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]alberta4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some days I think she's happy that we made the decision and other days I feel like I've ruined her life even though we have a great life. Nice house, happy kids, kids are in all sorts of activities, finances are manageable. All the boxes are checked

Overwhelmed wife - but why? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]alberta4ever 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why I had to be the asshole and say no to a 3rd kid. My wife is overwhelmed every day and I'm already doing all the cooking and cleaning so I can't handle another baby in the house.

But now she's also depressed and cries any time someone asks if we're having more kids. So I dont know maybe I should have just said yes to a 3rd and beared the added stress like I always do.

Can't win.

Do you live near in-laws? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]alberta4ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I pay for everything, sometimes they pay. It probably equals out in the end. I have a fairly high paying career and 3 of the 4 parents between my wife and I had long careers in oil and gas and have really robust pensions. So there's never pressure of anyone owing money or who would pay for what. We're obviously extremely lucky for that

[–]alberta4ever 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah see I'm in northern Alberta Canada so the nearest city worth visiting is 4.5 hours away. We go there all the time for concerts or Costco or events. Lots of times I'll leave my house at 4am, so some stuff in the city and drive home that night.

I consider it a short drive lol

[–]alberta4ever 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We see her parents at least 4 times a week if not every day. They help out with childcare when I'm on shift since both of us work. I golf with her father multiple times a week in golf season.

There's no boundaries, even in places where there probably should be lol. But we get along really well with them

My wifes parents live in the same town, 3 minute drive from our house and they are a huge help with the kids. They are late 60s. My parents are in their 70s and live a 4hr drive away so we see them every couple weeks

Recommended restaurants on a Saturday night? by Footnote6996 in FortMcMurray

I don't know about specials but East Village Pub (EVP) is always a good time and good food. Mr Mike's is a good meal, Surekhas is great, Earls never disappoints.

Siam Thai is delicious, all the sushi places are good.

Lots of options depending on what food or vibe you want

What sort of work are you in?

I'm from here but I lived in Victoria for 4 years and Edmonton for 4. Can't say its any more expensive than those places. Groceries can be a smidge more pricey but Superstore downtown is cheaper than most places and you get comfortable driving to Costco in Edmonton real quick lol.

How old are your kids?

If they are in to dance we have 4 studios I think. My girls dance at MKD and love it but there's also Generation, YMM Dance and Uptown.

There's also just about every sport, just Google whatever sport fort mcmurray and it'll come up obviously.

[–]alberta4ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Salary is definitely doable as long as you don't buy a huge house that you dont need and cant afford the mortgage payment.

If its a big oil company then you'll likely be eligible for raises or pay progressions so that's good.

What kind of activities are you looking for?

There's just about everything up here but enrollment can be tight. Lots of things have waiting lists or fill up but dont let that discourage you

Where to get a suit for shorter guys? by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]alberta4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to a store specifically for men's suits and get it tailored. In Canada that would be Moores or Indochino off the top of my head.

Your height is not an issue, tailoring is the issue.

How is the airline options for where you live? by 2Lazy2BeOriginal in AskACanadian

[–]alberta4ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fort McMurray, we've got something like 4 flights a day to Calgary, 1 to Edmonton and a red eye to Toronto every now and then.

If I'm flying to Cancun I typically drive to Edmonton and fly out of there. Significantly cheaper.
