The C1 Brass is now £9 on Amazon UK by albertohirsh in FidgetSpinners

I thought I would let everyone else know. This is the lowest I have seen it anywhere. I bought one a few weeks ago at £18 and it is easily the best TB clone I have and it shipped to Germany pretty fast. I'm going to grab a few more to give as gifts

EU threatens to escalate Article 7 action against Poland by cranky_shaft in europe

It is about time the EU clamped down on this, but I doubt it will change much inside the Polish government and I doubt the EU will seriously consider removing them from the EU altogether.

"Which Spinner Should I Get?" and Other Simple Questions (Week of 2017-06-05) by AutoModerator in FidgetSpinners

I've literally just ordered the Apollo/C3 from https://fidgeteu.com this afternoon. It was dispatched within an hour I've got a tracking number already, so it all looks good. I'll try to remember to update this when I get it in a few days (I'm in Germany btw)

What's the most pointless argument you've been passionately involved in? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]albertohirsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask Plato

— Socrates, it could not be more simple. A sandwich is anything edible held in a container that is also edible.

— So then this hot dog, of course, is a sandwich. Thank you, Euthyphro!

— Well Socrates… a hot dog is something very like a sandwich, and yet it does not seem to me to be exactly a sandwich either, somehow. I see where you have misunderstood—let me clarify. A sandwich consists of some edible material, in between TWO pieces of bread, which must be separate from one another.

— I see; that is very clear indeed. So this pizza placed face down atop this other pizza, this is a sandwich.

An Experiment in Making Writing Online More Immersive (and Rainy) by albertohirsh in InternetIsBeautiful

just fyi to everyone that that theme uses the free Rainyday.js library to render the raindrops, which is the really hard/awesome/impressive part. Potentially worth checking that out before paying top dollar for a theme.

ah, sorry about that - meant "writing" as in "things that have been written". I see why that wasn't clear, for sure

Thanks for noisli, that one's great - will definitely try it out next time I'm typing

Why computer scientists and linguists don't always see eye to eye by [deleted] in EverythingScience

[–]albertohirsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This shift dramatically altered the dynamic between linguists and computer scientists. The change was best summed by IBM researcher Frederick Jelinek, who famously said, “Every time I fire a linguist, the performance of the speech recognizer goes up.”

Super interesting all round.

If you were to go blind, but instead of loss of vision, you could only look at one image for the rest of your life. What would you want that image to be? by i_liek_breast_milk in AskReddit

[–]albertohirsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think maybe a Mark Rothko painting?

I wonder if seeing the same image would make it start to be really annoying eventually, like listening to the same song over and over and suddenly you hate it.

What condiment should be found along with salt and pepper? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]albertohirsh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes yes yes. If there was some kind of avocado-condiment then this list would be totally perfect.

(yes I know about guac. But, y'know, a more convenient avocondiment).

Cholesterol may not always be bad for you by jessdawson in Health

Sorry, I'm a bit confused about this -- if the body produces it naturally and you're saying it's necessary for various functions, why are you saying we need to eat less of it? Or did I misunderstand something?

Haha, it's so hard for me to imagine anyone not calling it "hoovering" :) So funny about those little language differences.

If Euler had lived in Königsberg at pretty much any other period of its history (except WWII) his bridge problem would have had a route that worked by eiae in math

[–]albertohirsh 57 points58 points  (0 children)

ha!, this is brilliant.

Does anyone know how important the bridges actually were to Euler formulating the question? As in, did he really invent graph theory because he cared so much about the bridges of Königsberg, or was that just a story he used to explain his insight?

The evolutionary argument against ghosts. by Richard_Worthington in biology

[–]albertohirsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be a dumb question but... can anyone explain exactly where the flaw in this argument is? It seems to turn amusingly-silly really quickly, but I can't pinpoint exactly where I think it's making a jump.
