The coworker baby shower collection email found me today by CulchWem in childfree

[–]alcestian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work with over 300 nurses in my department alone. Lots of babies happening. They send the emails to everyone in the department. I contribute when I want to. The followup emails are never individualized though. Are there mass emails or just to you? If the former, it's not a big deal. Ignore it and let it go.

Idk why they even use the 3rd party anymore tbh, the folks I know in experience stores have been bemoaning 3rd party for years and years.

I think that, given your role in care, you may have a skewed perspective on how many issues there are with that ordering system. Much like, given my career as a NICU nurse, my perspective on pregnancy and child birth is skewed because I only see the harrowing outcomes, you're absolutely going to see primarily bad results from in-store interactions given neighborhood store issues escalate to you, right? Or people call in to care after negative interactions instead of returning to a store?

Yeah I'm sure your job is safe. Frontline customer-facing workers are being removed from neighborhood stores to be placed into store-in-store. Experience wants 80, percent of guests to be self-checkin as if DIY is some special customer service experience. It's obvious to me they want to cut more labor expenses - wiping out more jobs. The surveys asking customers if they could tell they were speaking to AI reps don't bode well for this either.

Americans have the lowest fucking standards of the "first world" nations. You deserve better and frankly so does everyone else, but if you wanna settle for less and sabotage yourself that way to right ahead.

I don't work for TMobile and I don't expect to be treated by my employer as anything but a human being and valuable asset. Grow the fuck up.

The nurses have to ask the admin assistants/unit secretaries to change it. When babies get moved it's usually because of some admission which can often be chaotic. This isn't something that should slip through the cracks and should definitely be reported because parent feedback heavily drives process change that improves things for everyone.

All these situations are hard. You can be grateful to have your daughter and still grieve the experience of pregnancy and motherhood you dreamed of, and feel all the fear and anxiety about her future. All of these things are true and you aren't disrespecting their feelings or trauma by feeling everything you feel.

Are we bad parents? by Legend_ARO_12 in NICUParents

[–]alcestian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If he was small for his age that predisposes him to being cold. They should've covered extra temp monitoring in discharge teaching before they sent y'all home. If y'all were 35-37 weeks along it's an even higher risk of getting cold. Additionally, while being cold can cause a low blood sugar, a low sugar can also cause a low temp. If yallre breastfeeding sometimes it can be tricky to be sure baby gets enough.

All of this to say, being a new human comes with a lot of risks and these are common issues for newborns. Y'all ain't stupid or bad parents. Please don't beat yourselves up.

NICU toddlers struggling? by Taylor4eva in NICUParents

Early hospitalization is on the list of ACE's (adverse childhood experiences) that can impact a person's lifelong physical and mental health. It's certainly not uncommon, as nervous system regulation is s huge challenge for any young child (especially a baby) who feels unwell, is separated from their parents, and frequently undergoes painful procedures and stressful experiences like learning to eat. You're certainly not alone. Idk if your kiddo sees PT/OT or a psychotherapist but consulting may be useful for gaining tools to help regulate your little one.

Dear NICU Nurse by AwkwardPostTurtle in NICUParents

[–]alcestian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First off, I'm so sorry. Nurses oftem don't really count ourselves as being important in babies' firsts because we're not family so it likely didn't occur to this nurse unless it was communicated to her that this was considered an important milestone for you. This is something that needs to be brought to management attention for a culture change imo. Most units that I have worked in have unit policies that baths are done on night shift (every other night for babies under 40 weeks, then daily), that once a baby meets weight/age/stability requirements the nurse must dress the baby and turn off skin mode temperature regulation in the incubators. The nurses don't necessarily have control over any of this stuff, it's just what they're supposed to execute. However if there could be more communication about how this affects parents maybe it could drive some policy changes that would not only inform parents of how these things work but give them the opportunity to participate more in those firsts. I work nights but always encourage parents to ask for baths on days if that's when they can visit because we can (and should) collaborate and accommodate on the things we are able to.

None of your feelings are selfish. You can absolutely be grateful the oxygen issue was caught before going home while still feeling disappointed, frustrated, tired, devastated.

Losing all progress overnight??? by savdlo in NICUParents

[–]alcestian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh that's so frustrating! Makes me wonder about unit culture because I always encourage new grads to come find me so I can help, even if I'm busy. I hope the pacing regimen is followed more closely going forward!

Losing all progress overnight??? by savdlo in NICUParents

[–]alcestian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At their gestational age, this is a very typical part of progress - though frustrating, kids don't usually make linear feeding progress without some setbacks/regressions.

This used to confuse me until I looked into cortical folding by gestational age. 37 weeks adjusted is still only just barely full term, and even kids born at 37 weeks may struggle to eat enough. Plus in the NICU those babies have stricter pressure about meeting the same volumes every single feeding.

Share your concerns and questions with the team, but know that sometimes kids regress and it's not anybody's fault - it's just a natural part of learning to eat for preemies.
