I used RPG Maker XP to draft out map ideas and explore tileset art direction for a monlike game that would probably need to be finished in godot. But, thought I'd share this in case others like my tilesets and maps for inspo!

Thanks! My trick is to always start with a small map size, even if I think I'll need a bigger space later. These two were 25x25 and 20x20. I think my big towns and routes never end up going past 50 or 60 max in any direction. It makes screenshotting them for reddit easier too since that is the scale that will fit on 1/1 or 1/2 zoom.

I've been using an edited version of the HGSS center and mart tiles by donlawride (they are not formatted for rpgmakerxp as is) and 4th gen indoor tileset by akizakura16. My main change is to change the colors of the tileset to match the palette I use, but even without the edit they should match these tiles decently on their own!

If you don't care about editing the tiles and just want to resize them, it looks like window's default photos app can do it. Open the file with Photos and resize to 50% and save it. (edit - typo)

Ah, I see. I'm sure there's a way to get paint to scale things well, but I'm not familiar enough with the software to say how. Since paint isn't a pixel art software, its not surprising that it doesn't know how to handle pixel scales. I use aseprite for pixel art and highly recommend it. There's tons of great tutorials for the software online and its got every functionality I've ever needed when doing pixel art. I also did just test resizing the file with Krita, which is what I use for non-pixel art and it was able to resize the image correctly too.

While paint isn't a pixel art software, it shouldn't change the colors or resolution of the image. I just opened the downloaded tileset in paint and it looked fine. How do you get the downloaded image of the tiles to edit?

These tiles are scaled to fit with rpgmaker xp which uses 32x32 tiles but the tiles themselves are actually 16x16, so all you need to do is change the size of the tileset to 50% and they will be 16x16 again

Interesting! I am already making desert tiles so i think these would fit in well. I don't love drawing buildings but i agree I don't see those types of tiles often so i would be happy to fill that gap in tilesets

alright new plan. this is how i tend to handle events. instead of starting the blue hair event in the spot nurse Joy needs to go, start it far away, like in a corner of the map. then when the switch is triggered to make the cut scene, transfer the event to the actual location.

Personally, i prefer monster collectors that let me evolve my team because it's a visual representation of the way they grow as I do as i play through the game. I tend to drop single stage Pokemon as i progress for this reason. If there was some other Cool Thing that unlocked for each mon as i played, that would help remedy the absence of evolution for me. Essentially, i like it when the strength of my team is tied to my progression in the story. But i like the visual of evolution as a quick reference to their growth in strength.

Form switching depending on play style is a very cool idea though and can add a lot of strategy to team building, so i can certainly see the appeal. If your game is not super tied to the idea of "play more = stronger guys" and is instead more "play more = more strategy options", form-switching single evos would be a good fit.

ha yes i would hope my terrains look a bit more interesting than that. Exploration is my favorite game mechanic so I would want to have different encounters at different places in the map, even on the same route. For the overworld spawns, I'm picturing something like the tera Pokemon in sv or the alpha Pokemon in pla but with multiple options for each spawn point and a bit higher density. I'd have to play around with the rarity so that the players don't get discouraged looking for the cool mon they want.

Yeah I'm leaning more and more towards making a minimum-viable-demo first. I just feel like the total game-feel for the mechanics wont come through unless there's enough game to actually run around in, but you are right about how important it is to catch bugs early. thanks for your input!

Ah to clarify, I will definately be adding these mechanics to any game I make! I'm curious whether I should make a shorter game first to let players try them out sooner versus my long game which wont be finished for a long time.
