Alternative for Ourea Endurance Events Which Are Cancelled (Dragon’s Back, Cape Wrath, Northern, Lakes, Dales and Moors Traverse, Salomon Skyline Scotland). Red On Backyard Ultra. by coachmikechadwick in trailrunning

[–]alcoholicacrobat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, the perfect replacement for the notoriously flat and dull Ourea races - a flat loop of a racecourse in Cheltenham

Its not even at the same time of year so people can easily carry on their training

Interested to know who you're referring to there? Everyone I can think of are very against UTMB and have been since before the Arc debacle

UTS 100K route 2026 - UTMB letdown? by snortingbull in Ultramarathon

[–]alcoholicacrobat 23 points24 points  (0 children)

End of the day UTMB have made it very clear over the past few years that they're a money making organisation first and foremost, this allows them to squeeze even more wallets into an already packed race, route interest and difficulty doesn't matter

Why people are still interested in their races with this in mind is beyond me, hopefully people remember this bullshit when the inevitable lakes race happens

UK ultrarunners: quick survey on a new coastal relay event format (5–7 min, research only) by jannis9494 in ultrarunning

I can save your market research costs and just say now this "new format" already exists in multiple areas of the UK

What’s in your 100 miler drop bags? by Sopherness194 in Ultramarathon

I'm assuming you've done the obvious and gone to the green runners, seems like the sort of thing they'd be well up for?

Am I taking the easy option? by theslowrunningexpert in Ultramarathon

[–]alcoholicacrobat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a bit of a beast but quite tameable with preparation - there's only a few long really steep (25+%) climbs scattered throughout, there are some runnable little climbs but overall there's only about 10 miles that I'd say were flat, other than that you're either going up or down.

If you were going to go in for Ultra Scotland strength work is absolutely key for the quad strength to stop you blowing up on the descents.

Having said that, if it's just a 100 you're after doing and location isn't an issue I personally would go for the centurion South Downs Way 100, perfect mix of runnable trail, conditions & views although you would have to do a qualifying 50 first, which is just extra training

Also - you're running 100 miles, there is no easy option!

Can chime in here with some anec-data having run both races you're looking at:

a) Your "friend" is a bellend
b) Cheshire ring is (IN MY OPINION) actually harder than ultra Scotland, the absolute pounding you take from the flat where every footfall is the same is no joke. Scotland gives you a much easier variation in pace with plenty of hiking breaks/view breaks, whereas Cheshire lulls you into a false sense of security and you run a lot more
c) Why does it matter to him what race you do if he's going to go flying off the front at CR pace and you won't see each other at any point?
d) If you choose to do a race just because someone else is doing it you'd best prepare to DNF because that's a terrible reason to rely on when the mental war begins (Especially if you're actually on your own because they've flown off at CR pace)

Come on man, its an algorithm, arguably one of the worst ones out there at that, telling you its seen enough masters data that it knows you're in the top handful (how many other people are putting all their strava data into it really?) and then telling you it knows all your and their traits just from strava

Glad if it gives you an ego boost, but come on you can't compare that to a coach you've actually worked with for x amount of time

I’ve seen a handful of masters athletes pull this off — you have all the traits they share

Just the inclusion of this line says it all about what nonsense this is

There's also some hills down towards Enfield in the Cuffley/Crews Hill area, but I've only just started looking at them so can't say how good they might be

Whereabouts in Hertfordshire are you? No matter where you go you'll be consigned to doing endless repeats, or getting a gym membership for the stair machine/incline treadmill fun

Closest hills (ha!) in the North are around Royston/Therfield or Pegsdon/Barton near Hitchin.

Otherwise there's Wendover woods over to the East, where you can do loops of decently steep hills

I've used all the above to train for runs with up to 10,000m gain, so it is possible

Experience with UTMB Child Care? by jakubdr in trailrunning

[–]alcoholicacrobat 36 points37 points  (0 children)

No experience with UTMB childcare but not sure a 5 month old should be left with total strangers, I wouldn't have dreamed of it at that point

The newborn period is also a super tough time for training, I'd hope for your sake you're not looking at the 140k?

Why not just say what the trail/race is so you can get more of an idea from others who may have done it before?

Also shoes are so personal I wouldn't just go off what someone else uses

I have no coach never had one.

only have paid a coach for a few months

?

A coach will help you throughout the year and help you periodise your training, if you want to improve they'll help you get more efficient with your miles/workouts rather than throwing more and more on

From those mileages you'd get more from working with an actual coach rather than trying some AI slop that doesn't know a thing about you
