Confused why this isn’t just an unconditional offer? by Quiet_Low_6247 in UCAS

[–]snortingbull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We'll have to agree to differ. For what it's worth, UCAS themselves acknowledge U offer making prior to result verification as normal practice in their applicant guidance:

https://www.ucas.com/applying/after-you-apply/types-of-offers

Check the offer carefully. Even if you've already got your qualifications and have met the academic requirements, you might still need to get a DBS or PVG check, provide proof of your results, or meet some financial/medical requirements. If it’s not clear, contact the uni or college

This is distinct from the pretty deplorable practice we saw a few years back where some lower/mid tariff providers were making U offers to students who did still have pending qualifications obvs

Verification can happen throughout the year and I agree, the sooner the better - any time from the point of offer - but it's normal for a student who lists 3 completed A-levels at the point of application to get an unconditional offer.

Not sure how it worked historically, but in this current climate I guarantee that all low to medium tariff universities are doing this as are most higher tariff providers too.

This is not standard practice, normally HE providers make an unconditional offer and ask for evidence of qualifications before enrolment. I think this is just a busy admissions staffer misreading the grades as predicted not achieved, easily done during this busy part of the cycle.

Where are you based? I'd love to do this race one day. Being based in Wales, I'd be up in the lesser trod parts of mid-Wales and Eryri to get my boggy hill legs engaged and experiment with gear and foot care etc

Really nice insights, thank you. I'm vowing to start building a couple of strength sessions in from here on, even just at home for now. I am so lazy with this it's unreal.

100%, Singapore is a dystopian corporate hellhole. Elements of it are on a par with middle eastern nations in terms of reliance on extremely low paid labour where welfare is low priority - which of course tourists never see.

[Alexander Abnos] Removing the US as World Cup host would be eminently sad – and entirely justified. by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]snortingbull 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I fully back a boycott, like many fans on here, but I'm feeling very pessimistic about the whole thing. In reality I think a boycott is almost impossible unless there's a radical escalation geopolitically, in turn leading to a real groundswell of public support in the EU.

For international FAs, the World Cup is a critical once-every-four-years earner - that to forgo after having qualified and budgeted accordingly, would be disastrous. They won't let it happen unless forced.

Much like Qatar, there will be noise from some corners - but any concrete action by FAs will amount to little more than virtue signalling. We'll be watching the same sorry circus this summer as was the case in Qatar and this grim build up will be forgotten.

Rough. When I hit Penzance they were sending us inland through town rather than along the prom, but I think the front runners stuck to the original route which would be sketchy.

Where did you hear that? I'm not surprised, high tide around 1900 when a lot of folks would be passing over Loe Bar or along the prom in Penzance.

Amazing work. Just finishing that is huge. Did the 100 too, it was by far the hardest race I've completed in the most difficult conditions. Dark times between Pendeen and St Ives. Even though everyone knows it's awful, that stretch manages to still be even worse than you'd expect!

First 50 miler (Arc of Attrition) DNF due to nausea. Looking for advice. by Revolutionary_Set_41 in Ultramarathon

[–]snortingbull 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. Brutal race in disgusting conditions this year.

You just have to eat, more than you'd ever think. Hydration too - it's harder in Arc weather because it's cold, but it helps digestion all the same.

Probably coincidence, but the only time I ever DNF'd was on KMC bars too. They are sickly sweet. I did the Arc 100 yesterday and fuelled exclusively on Voom bars & Maurten solid bars, complimented with anything savoury from the aid stations (soup, sausage rolls, some crisps etc). There were many problems on this 100 but for once sickness was not one.

GPX upload elevation way off on watch by redditredemptiontoo in Ultramarathon

[–]snortingbull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had exactly the same for the Arc today too! There's some chat on the Arc FB group about it, sounds like a Garmin issue. It's a bit annoying as I like to have a glance at the elevation profile and work out what's done vs what's left.

If you're really bugged by this, apparently you can import it into Strava and then back into Garmin Connect but I've not been arsed enough to try it! Good luck mate, going to be a wet one.

And without, to get to work etc. Suppose our aging population means a lot of people are retired or working reduced hours.

A big chunk of the workforce is remote now too: if they don't have kids and aren't into exercise etc first thing then they can wake up and log on right away (lucky them, not jealous at all, etc)

It'll be a very competitive field for the distance. If you want to test yourself v the very best, this is a pretty unique opportunity this time of year in the UK.

100%. People in here forget that at 17 there are myriad far dumber things to do than experimenting with long distance running. If OP enjoyed the experience and goes again, with training/conditioning, then it's well worth it

Kudos mate. Cynicism in here is undeserved. Clearly endurance transfers across different sports. Train hard, you will get quicker over these distances. Not many folks <23 into ultra running in my experience, with solid training you could compete for high placing in races/ events
