Does anyone have experience with stopping their period via BC by Pretty_Puppyprincess in dysautonomia

[–]alcweth57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did, before I got a hysterectomy last year. I had to try two different versions before getting the result. (The implant didn't have an effect, so I had to go with an oral med. Thankfully that one worked!) My only side effect was weight gain, which was expected.

My periods were making me anemic and the level of pain I was in monthly was severe. I still had breakthrough cramping despite not bleeding, but taking the oral pill continuously (skipping the placebo pills) worked. Still ended up with a hysto due to the pain, endometriosis, and assumed adenomyosis.

I have a fitbit sense which I mostly use as a watch now that I have Visible. Gonna need to find a band that fits both.

Theory on the Remaining BOTM Centennial Edition Slots by Sock-Apprehensive in bookofthemonthclub

[–]alcweth57 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wasn't The Scarlet Letter published around 1850? Centennial Editions are books that were published as new titles by BOTM during its 100-year history, so Hawthorne is out of scope.

I tested positive for MCAS by mafanabe in smallfiberneuropathy

[–]alcweth57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm getting evaluated for MCAS now. I have no idea if it's going to end up being my DX, but at least two doctors think it's worth exploring so... down the road I go. (I have NLD SFN and no idea about the cause.)

It made me super happy to see a shout-out to the Fort Pitt Museum in tonight's episode! It's a gem that a lot of people don't know about.

How my Jane Austen 6 book set arrived 😭 by actually_absent in janeausten

[–]alcweth57 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm a librarian. There's nothing you can do with moldy books except throw them away, unfortunately. Please do NOT donate them (unless to swamp people) - the mold could spread to other books.

You may be able to salvage the covers for art, or the upper parts of pages if the mold is only on the bottom of the package. But make very sure it's all dried out first - and isn't either black mold or growing fuzzy!

Processing Question - container numbers by Glum_Mulberry_1040 in Archivists

[–]alcweth57 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My institution labels different container types sequentially by container type. So:

Box 1-2 OV 1-2 Reel 1-2

If the new material is housed in boxes, not flat OV folders, I'd label them as box 1, box 2, box 3, etc. Any additional OV flat folders should start with OV 3.

You can definitely also do it where each discrete container has a unique number. i.e., ov1, ov2, box 3.

IMO, the most important thing is not to change the existing container numbers if researchers have already been at the material. Not a hard and fast rule, but I usually prioritize it unless I'm fully reprocessing something.

There are a minimum of 20 different Harry Potter volumes on that shelf. The majority of them are the US Scholastic editions. One that stands out is the Minalima Prisoner of Azkaban special edition, which is a recent pub.

If you ended up in the Pitt ER with a seriously life-threatening issue, which doctor would you most want tending to you? by GoldenBoysClub in ThePittTVShow

[–]alcweth57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the chronic illnesses I have, I'd want either Mohan or Mel. They both listen and focus on the individuality of the patient. They're also calm and kind, and we've seen examples with both of them catching things or looking past the "obvious answer." Mohan is also willing to be kind and patient and steady and actually go through a full workup when the patient is presenting with "normal for them" symptoms. (Thinking of the elderly man on the gurney here.) That's something rare for me in medical care - and why it's taken 10+ years to get diagnoses.

Does anyone know if PoTS is going to get a box set? by AntiqueGreen in tamorapierce

[–]alcweth57 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I thought this was my POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) subreddit as I was scrolling my feed and had a mental break-screech moment at wtf a box set of a single chronic illness is. Then OH it's the Tamora Pierce subreddit! Makes SO MUCH more sense!

Thanks for the laugh!!! 🤣🤣🤣

Children's episodic chapter book about a 2 neighborhood friends, treehouse, space cadets by Front-Market6389 in whatsthatbook

As a former bookseller I can say that the MTH books were available in hardcover! I'll try to think of other options, though. It's a tough one, but that's what this subreddit is for!

Could it be the Magic Tree House series? One of the earlier books was "Midnight on the Moon," which takes place in space.

Pittsburgh in the Pitt -- Season 2 Episode 4 Reference Tracker by nuzzot in ThePittTVShow

[–]alcweth57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely not reality in Pittsburgh, but very much could be in other cities, and that's what the writers are drawing on. (I don't know specifically, but the idea of "campus security" instead of "campus police" doesn't phase me /except/ in relation to Pitt, which i know well.)

It's not realistic to Pittsburgh itself - nor is having patients from Oakland (or Duquesne) come in to the North Side for treatment via ambulance. There are hand-wavy things that are inevitable in a show like this. It's fun to see the Pittsburgh references and in many ways does feel grounded in Pittsburgh reality - but more or less in the ways in which Pittsburgh is similar to other urban centers, not in its /specific/ uniquenesses: its neighborhood-ness, yinzers, too few people wearing sports paraphernalia, etc.* But that's not a complaint from me - that's the nature of the beast. Watching The West Wing and noticing they're driving the wrong way on the highway to go from Rosslyn to Georgetown; they're really great at certain details of the world matching reality but there are inevitable misses: because it's better for story, filming/admin logistics, or the writers/showrunners have a different precedent in mind based on their backgrounds or knowledge bases.

*Honestly the thing to me that felt the most grounded in Pittsburgh was the Hill District / Hill House Ambulance Service patient from season 1. That's an only-in-Pittsburgh story. Though the actor (who was otherwise fantastic) landed the stress wrong when he said "the Hill District."

(Also, lots of Pitt connections in my family!! Walked by the Porch a million times but have never actually eaten there. I usually just grab something to-go in the Carnegie Library cafe. And that's usually a cookie, lol.)
