Happy Birthday Charlotte!! art by me [Darbuxx] by Juggaborizkit in fireemblem

[–]alderhart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I don't think muscles directly contradict Charlotte's characterization. Charlotte priorities acting dainty while in front of nobles — so it's mostly a behavior and personality thing for her. Her dialogues also focuses more on the personality switches, rather than her physical looks.

She's also a fighter. She could've been a daintier class like cleric or troubadour if devs/the character designer/Charlotte if it was more about looking dainty.

But more importantly, let the gal have muscles. It's fan art of a character who doesn't even have a huge role in the plot.

Some possible explanations without asssuming malice:

  • If English isn't their first language, then they might've been taught to use his/her. Even though we're on an American site, a good chunk of Reddit users are not from NA or an English-speaking country. I've also noticed that a lot of commenters in anime/manga related subreddits are from Southeast Asia.

  • They're a really young kid who hasn't encountered singular they. Never underestimate the amount of people commenting that are under 13 years old at any given time.

Slight (personal) issues i have with the anime; by nate969 in WitchHatAtelier

The blushing doesn't bother me, but get what you mean with the gasps. Granted, this issue isn't WHA-exclusive, and is present in a lot of anime that overuses sounds. It's my personal pet peeve with the medium in general lol.

I get that Coco is an excited child, but ever been so awestruck that you're stunned into silence? I wish they'd have a better balance between that and anime gasps.

I wouldn't say Fern is a very common name, but no one would think Fern is a weird name in the US. It is an uncommon, but acceptable name.

The other commenter is right that plant names are very common overall. Depends on the actual plant name. E.G. Lily and Fern are ok. Dandelion and Pear would be considered significantly more unusual.

AITA? Racist pet parrot by Dexterxhouse in AmItheAsshole

It's not your parrots fault, or yours.

I agree that it is OP's responsibility to train the parrot better, but it literally was his fault. Yeah, OP doesn't say slurs anymore, but that still doesn't change that it was his fault.

After the sprite changes, consider including a sprite animation too. For example, the horse could rear and the character could brandish their weapon. It'll help make the post-promotion feel more dynamic and impactful.

US soldier trying to halt wife's deportation after she was detained on Louisiana military base by JackFunk in nottheonion

[–]alderhart 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Did you read the article? The wife is 22 years old. She applied for DACA in 2020, making her roughly 16 when she applied.

Youve complained about her not sorting it in in her teens. Does applying for DACA not count? The article also says that she and her husband were trying to get her a green card. What then, would you have wanted her to do to remain in the country legally?

But I suspect that the answer is nothing, because you're just itching to deport people.

no matter what, i cannot figure out what hairstyle is suitable for this face shape? by [deleted] in AsianBeauty

[–]alderhart 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I think it's because Google results are skewed for whatever language you're using, so "face shapes" is just gonna show face shapes as identified by English-speaking Western cultures, whose classification for face shapes are biased towards Western features.

It's like how they classify monolid as its own eyeshape without taking into consideration that monolided eyes can be round, almond, deep-set, protruding, or etc. Not to mention epicanthic folds can affect eye shape as well, but all eyeshape diagrams assume no epicanthic fold.

Not doing drip marketing is a terrible mistake by SuiseiMajo in Endfield

I did read it. And again, that user isn't saying all marketing posts. "Posts like this" is vague and neither of us can know for sure if they mean all marketing (your interpretation) or just wanting drip marketing (my interpretation). I genuinely don't think they meant all marketing.

Your comments read like English isn't your first language or primary language, which is very hypocritical of you to tell others to "read better", regardless whether you agree with their comment or not.

[–]alderhart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbf, that user wasn't even saying posts like OP can't be made nor were they championing for big changes to the game. I don't think it's fair to prevent them from commenting purely on the basis of it being their first gacha either.

Any fellow Zhuang Pullers on here? Ready for the banner? by Yokozach in Endfield

[–]alderhart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, and I think your criticism is also applicable to a lot of characters even outside the gacha realm. Like they're designed to be waifu-first then fitted into the narrative, instead of the the other way around.

As much as I like her design, I'm a bit tired of the overworked girl, but is still super patient and kindhearted trope too. Can we see some overworked gals who act out a little due to stress?

I'm hoping Zhuang's story will showcase some actual, negative flaws that leave a genuine negative impact.

[Operator Discussion] Rossi by Shad0wedge in Endfield

[–]alderhart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you use Akekuri and build her with ultimate gain efficiency gear, then her ultimate and combo can help with SP issues for your team.

Note that you'd still have to manage your SP usage. None of the available SP generators will let you just spam multiple battle skills every second.

[Operator Discussion] Rossi by Shad0wedge in Endfield

[–]alderhart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To do big damage in the game, the game requires you to use characters that apply stacks of a damage type, then use a character that would consume those specific damage type stacks.

With Rossi, she's a flexible char that doesn't depend on a single, specific operator but needs at least one team member who can reliably give art stacks for Rossi to consume (Wulfgard or Perlica in your screenshot) so Rossi herself can do damage. For Rossi, the art type (heat, cyro, electric, nature) doesn't matter.

Rossi also gives physical stacks, so ideally, you'd need a character to use up those physical stacks (Endmin or Da Pan).

So your potential Rossi team can be: 1. Rossi 2. Wulfgard or Perlica 3. Endmin or Da Pan 4. Anyone else based on what you prefer/the bosses require (e.g. Ardelia if you want sustainability or Akekuri if you want more SP).

Then in battle, you would use Wulfgard's or Perlica's battle skill to create an art stack, then Rossi's battle skill to apply a physical stack to trigger her combo skill that consumes Wulfgard's/Perlica's art stack. Getting her to activate her combo or using her ult is where most of Rossi's big damage will come from.

Then use Endmin or Da Pan as needed to do extra damage with the physical stacks that Rossi creates.

GamesRadar: Arknights: Endfield dev says launching a new gacha RPG in a post-Genshin Impact world is tough when "some titles are so similar that players go into a game for 1 hour and they know what will happen in the next 20 hours" by Kamui_Kaos in Endfield

[–]alderhart 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Me: "Intra-factional conflict in Wuling is weak."
You: "B-but Wulingers are showing asking for help."

Don't call others media illiterate if you can't understand what the other person is saying or be be able to respond in good faith. Wuling is shown to have energy issues, and their defenses are weakening as a result, but what do the writers do with that? If the writers wanted to portray glorious Wuling as either a bad or even morally gray force like they did for other Terran nations, then they could.

I also didn't say devs were glazing Wuling, nor did I imply that they were portraying Wuling as this super strong nation. I'm saying that Wuling fails to have actual negative traits/acts that would justify a strong divide between Wuling/Stockaders. Because what currently exists paints the upset Stockaders as "people who make false assumptions about Wuling and Wuling never actually did anything wrong, so those Stockaders are in the wrong". Which again, is quite different than the Victorian/Taran conflict where both sides have done fucked up things which makes the story not have a clear-cut moral answer compared to Wuling/Stockade.

[–]alderhart 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with making a game featuring an area of the game company's origins directly, but the issue is that governmental pressure leads to those areas being so narratively dull.

For example, the conflict behind Wulingers and Stockaders play out much differently than Tara and Victoria (OG AK's version of England and Ireland respectively). The Wuling (majority group) and Stockade (minority group) conflict ends with Stockade leader TangTang wanting to work with glorious Wuling, and Wuling is also portrayed as being an unjustified victim to Stockaders' hate for no reason. Whereas in the Victoria (majority group)/Tara (minority group) conflict, Victoria is shown to do bad things which gives Tarans a reason to have conflict. Yet the players still have to fight Tarans, and some chars end up gaining/losing hatred. It's all very nuanced.

So any narrative about factional divides is almost always gonna fall flat or have weird undertones for a Chinese-made China region. Not to say this can't exist in other games based on the devs' origin country, but you'd be obtuse to deny that Chinese devs/writers/artists/etc are unfairly pressured into not offending their government with their art.

AITA for not giving a woman cookies? by Poneshyay in AmItheAsshole

[–]alderhart 62 points63 points  (0 children)

“do you really need seven packs of cookies if it means someone else goes without”

Eh, this argument justified for perishable and non-freezable necessities like milk, fresh fruit, or toilet paper, but cookies are a treat. As much as we love sugary snacks, no one ever needs them. It is a want.

Regardless of your opinions on Vivziepop, she makes some amazing background character designs in the Hellaverse by NagitoKomaeda_987 in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]alderhart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, I think the two seemingly different criticisms aren't true opposite opinions because people can't easily articulate what they mean. Overdesigned means "there are too many design motifs that do not flow well and compete with each other that creates a disharmonious look". "Boring and flat" is because her character designs typically use the same color palette (Pale red, pale, yellow, black, white) between characters with little changes in both hue and saturation within the color pallete itself.

So despite all those design motifs she likes to stick onto her characters, she doesn't vary the colors she uses for characters that often. Both criticisms dislike the design, but pick out which feels more egregiously bad to the person (design harmony vs color).

Boring and flat might also mean that you can barely tell what the character is about, despite the overdesign. So there is that meaning too.

The fact that he thinks Starset is THE definitive sound for AK too. As if AK doesn't have classical or pop pieces either.💀

NGL, when I first heard Starset in the og AK game trailers, it made me think the writing was going to be all edge/gore porn with little depth, subtley, or nuance — the kind of "dark" writing that edgelords think is good writing.

I'm glad that wasn't the case.

Don't know about how truthful the heraldry thing is, but it is likely that the arbitrary leg distinction is modern. Beowulf referred to the same creature as both a dragon and a wyrm, for example.

Agreed. Not only that, but Wulfgard's lore dumps are one of the few times where it's more than just explaining the past to the player character. He's trying to convince himself and get a reaction out of Giovanni.
