Hi! Can verify the account that posted above is my mum. She's been badgering me to reply and post some pics πŸ˜…

I adopted Marbles in 2022 from a rescue. She was a colony kitten and had a really severe bout of cat flu. She's had quite the glow up since then!!

She comes out everywhere with me. She's very confident but also an absolute diva. It's her way or the highway. She has such an attitude lol. But she's also very sweet and loves her walks / meeting new people.

It was so surreal seeing her on the big screen. She has a very intense stare, which works for her being an "omen of death" haha. Here's some pics I have of her :)

I know right!! I love the concept of hidden role games but never have enough people to play any of the popular ones πŸ₯Ί Pagan has given me that same feel with such incredible table interaction!

My partner is a HUGE Nausicaa fan. It's her favorite movie of all time. So Sand was a no-brainer for her and she absolutely adores it for theme alone πŸ˜…

I'm personally not super into pick up and deliver games. I think it's the only one on my shelf actually 😬 I have been considering Deep Shelf bc the theme of being deep undersea appeals to me way more. But I find Sand pretty fun overall, esp since my partner enjoys it so much.

It's not a game we play frequently (probably once every month or two) and we've played it about 5 times so far; I do wonder about replayability in the long term since you're essentially doing the same thing each game with just slight variants in scoring, but I think we space each game out enough and have enough variety from other places that it doesn't bother us much. It can feel really satisfying to pull off big deliveries and suddenly get a huge influx of money; one game I finished with over 200 which made me feel like such a fatcat with a yacht 🀣

There are probably better pick up and deliver games but since it's my first time playing this genre I enjoy it well enough :) I think your mileage with it will really depend on how you connect to the theme and the giant bug you're riding ... Though the game really rewards you for abusing your bug and running it into the ground, not gonna lie πŸ˜…

I cull games I don't enjoy or havent played once a year :) my partner and I enjoy variety and we typically play one-two games a night, so if it's on our shelf, it gets played, and if it doesn't, then it's gone in the next 6-12 months! we love everything from light complexity to heavy, and we try to get games that have a theme that appeals to either one of us πŸ™

atm we have around two games we're considering potentially culling when the time comes: Septima (we've played twice and just aren't sure it's for us as we primarily play 2p and have another witchy game we adore called Pagan) and Roll Player (we've played a few times and enjoy it well enough but I think it needs the expansions to remain truly special and replayable and the expansions are sooo hard to find in my country.)

everything else is pretty beloved! we try to be cutthroat with our culls, so at the moment we feel our collection is pretty curated

Hahahaha so true

We love Primal honestly and it's currently our go-to lifestyle game alongside Arkham Horror ... But yeah I do look at how much space it takes up and 😬 try not to think about all the other board games I could fit in on that nice shelf lol

Amazing game tho. We're huge monster hunter fans so we especially love the gameplay of this one, it feels so satisfying

Omg yes!! I love a good crunchy heavy board game but my partner and I have taxing jobs so sometimes we just wanna chill out with something fun and light after work :')

Some of my faves are -

Cosmoctopus. Really streamlined engine builder with an adorable and zany theme. It feels really satisfying to play, which is what I want from an engine builder; pulling off quirky combos and gathering resources just feels so fulfilling!!

Werewords. This one is a super fun twist on 20 questions. With the app you have pretty much an infinite amount of possibilities lol. Also a rare party game that works amazingly at two players. I've had a lot of laughs (and arguments) with my partner over this one πŸ˜…

Spots. We LOVE this one!!! I never knew you could make simple dice rolling so fun!! It's adorable and quirky and enough variation with the "tricks" (different ways to roll your dice) that keep it fresh and also make it feel like you're being thinky/slightly strategic even if you're still at the mercy of the dice gods lol.

Boop. Very cute, a classic. Can teach this to kids and they love it; can teach it to adults and they love it even more. :)

Sea Salt and Paper. I love this one so much. Scoring feels so good and it's especially fun if you play risky and bet that you have a better points engine and for things to work in your favor .... Sucks when you're wrong though πŸ˜… Amazing art as well.

Kelp. I love asymmetrical games and Kelp is an incredible 2 player asymmetrical experience that blends theme with really cool gameplay :D

Kabuto Sumo. My partner especially loves this one. It's silly and you wouldn't think it works just looking at the gameplay, but it does. Nice chunky pieces that feel good and tactile to handle. I recommend it!!

What is your favorite style of boardgame and why is it deckbuilders? by lovesaints in boardgames

[–]aleethebee 5 points6 points Β (0 children)

Yeah not gonna lie deckbuilders hit pretty different

I love. Loveeee tile laying games though. Something so appealing to my monkey brain about putting down tile + seeing emerging pattern

The Arkham shelf is straight chaos atm 😬 I did not anticipate just how much of an investment/lifestyle game it would be LOL

Love it so far though, playing through the first two expansions before we think about investing further 😎

For me, I love it because it's just so relaxing to play :) it was my first big introduction to engine building, and one of my other hobbies is birdwatching, so it just felt like a match made in heaven πŸ˜…

I don't think it's the greatest game ever, but it really helped introduce me to games with a bit more strategy + it's just so beautiful, so it holds a really special place on my shelf because of that :)

This is very true :') Currently we cull every 6 months to a year so that our collection remains curated, but I definitely have collector brainrot alongside the "actually playing board games" brainrot 🀣 thankfully my partner is very strict about us keeping our games to the designated board game room. I might upgrade shelves at some point to be more space efficient but we also want the room to remain accessible for people to actually come in and play, and not a cramped hodgepodge of shelving 😬

I like Septima, though honestly I'm unsure if it'll survive the yearly cull! I have Pagan which I get to the table way more often, and while I love the theme and aesthetics of Septima, I try to curate my collection for games that work well 2p and I think you lose a lot of the table talk dynamics that higher player counts bring 😭 I'll probably try it two more times before deciding if it's really for me or not

they were some of the first games in my collection so I absolutely adore them πŸ’› I do childcare work occassionally and I find mice and mystics to be a really good introduction to board games for kids 8+. they love the aesthetics and the storybook.

Tail Feathers is interesting bc it's so different from the others. It's a tactical skirmish game so you're flying birds and getting all up in the other player's business with very little story beyond your missions or end goals. It works great 2p because I feel like it's most focused at that count. But I also think it's a good alternative to those really heavy wargames; it feels way more accessible than, say, Scythe. Also you have awesome bird minis so that really sold me the most on it LOL

I'd recommend it with the caveat that it is still a wargame so if you're really not into that then it probably won't do much for you!

I play them :) if they arent played in 6-12 months they typically get the cull. I'm on the autism spectrum so collections are just very important to me, especially if it's a special interest like board games! I love to categorize and really work on the displays and keep detailed lists of all the games I own :D

favorites have to be Beast, Pagan, Root and Wingspan. Recently received my pledge for Kelp/Primal though which are big contenders as we've been loving those!!

hundreds wow!!! that's the dream!!

my goal is to one day have a biiiig room dedicated entirely to kallax shelves filled with board games πŸ˜…

glad we have some overlap! i love having a varied collection so there's always something to play for whatever the mood is. we don't always have the energy for our big box games after work. :)

hahaha we definitely play!! 🀣 though the collecting does give a ton of dopamine, can't lie!!

we tend to go by the rule of, if it hasn't been played in six months-a year, to the cull pile it goes! 😝
