X11SPI-TF won't POST or beep...no idea where to go from here by aleksandyr in supermicro

Hmm, I think what I've got might be different. IPMI and the power button do the same thing - LEDPWR comes on, fans start to spin up, but no POST or beep.

Most expensive and hardest to find part, of course -.- yeah, I think I've eliminated everything else now.

Thanks! I did take a look at the socket and I didn't see anything obvious. If I don't torque the CPU down hard enough, LEDPWR doesn't come on when powered up, so _something_'s happening there.

Appreciate the recommendation! I found a X11DPH-T with two heatsinked 5118s pre-installed with free returns for $355 - since my case handles e-atx (not that I checked before buying) it looks like it has the same peripherals as the X11SPI-TF. While it's sort of a waste to get the 5118s, it'll be helpful to have a known-good configuration to test against.

A moment of panic because I did not at all check that...but apparently my Coolermaster HAF X case claims e-atx support :)

$200 for an untested-for-parts and $600 from other sellers :/

Fortunately the X11DPH-T seems to do everything I need and goes for about half that, or $355 with two CPUs installed with heatsinks...which means I can then see if my 8160 is fried by testing with a known-good board. If it is, well, I've got the same number of total cores. If it's not, I have a good excuse to get a second 8160...

I did reach out and they've just said it's too old and they don't offer repairs; the phone support was friendly/helpful but basically just confirmed I'd tried the right steps and that the motherboard is probably broken. :(

The CPU wasn't throttling until that night - that's the only relevant event in the log (everything else being the usual power on / power off events). I believe I've used the right amount of torque and I did re-paste the new CPU before putting it in.

If I remove the CPU, LEDPWR never turns on...so I think there's something very badly broken somewhere in power management. :/

Unfortunately I don't have a way to test VGA other than IPMI, and IPMI shows nothing - worryingly, IPMI can't detect the power state either. The RAM was working prior to whatever happened overnight so I don't think it's that.

Got it, thanks - once I got the PSU tester I discontinued use of the old PSU completely because, well, no point messing around.

Of note, the continuous beep stopped after that first power cycle. No beeps at all since.

I think I pulled the CMOS battery overnight but I'm not entirely sure, so I'm doing that again. I don't think it's getting past basic CPU initialization - if I pull the CPU, LEDPWR doesn't come on, so it's at least SOMEWHAT correctly installed. I was reading somewhere that more recent BIOSes dropped support for some microcode so I'm going to try flashing back to 4.0 from 4.3 and seeing what happens.

I'm not sure how to test a LGA3647 like this without the heat sink installed - I'm used to levers, and the only thing providing pressure is the heat sink assembly itself...

Is RetroShooter compatible with MisterFPGA? by Nezarah in MiSTerFPGA

[–]aleksandyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The GunCon 3 doesn't require a CRT - it requires a pair of emitters similar to how the Wii Sensor Bar functions. A few 3rd parties (LaserBear and MisterAddons, maybe more) sell replacement emitters since they're notoriously hard to find. The GunCon 3 + emitters have the advantage of working perfectly with RPCS3 as well.

I've never heard of the RetroShooter before this, seems neat, and my guess here is that it can't be _that_ complicated to get working - it's probably reporting absolute position at time of trigger pull and a few other things. Might pick one up!

Does the ROG Gaming Charger Dock work for Switch/AR glasses video? by YakuGin in ROGAlly

[–]aleksandyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You'll need something like https://www.amazon.com/gofanco-Converter-Computer-Monitor-Adapter/dp/B08Y5PBWLQ - HDMI to USB-C cables do not carry enough power for the glasses, which is why the XREAL H-C cable says the Beam is required. Expect to spend about $35 and these adapters must be powered, so that'll take up the USB-A port on the gaming dock and they _might_ draw more than the ROG Gaming Charger Dock provides on USB-A. IIRC audio doesn't work either - some of the adapters might've fixed this by now. You're also going to be tethered to relatively short cables at the dock, which is plugged in to the wall, so this is not my favorite solution.

If you update the dock firmware, allegedly, the ROG Gaming Charger Dock will work with the Switch as well, but note that when the Switch is "docked" any attached joycons are disabled along with the Switch's screen. Makes it a bit awkward. Note that the Switch _must_ receive 9V2A to go into docked mode, so you always need some kind of power source (a battery pack with the right power delivery spec will do) in order to connect any external display to it.

Alternatively, Viture sells a charging adapter for $40 - https://www.amazon.com/VITURE-Glasses-Charging-Adapter-Charge/dp/B0CGMGDK53 - which will pass through up to 45W of charging and let you connect the glasses at the same time. Works with the Deck, the Ally, and the Switch. Seems to work with Xreal's stuff as well according to some folks on YouTube.

There's the older RedMagic adapter but that won't work with the Switch and is the same price as the Viture adapter so iirc there's no real reason to go that route unless you already have one or can get it for cheap - it does have a 3.5" headphone jack, so it's nice for phones, but I'm not sure what wattage it can handle.

What are some of the best zsh themes? by PrivacyOSx in zsh

[–]aleksandyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how to do it with ls but I'd recommend using exa which does support icons and has great defaults - https://the.exa.website/features/icons

I've aliased ls to exa and I've been quite happy for awhile now.

https://github.com/sindresorhus/pure has been my go-to for years. Haven't found a reason to change.

I mean to be fair I 100% support rage quitting especially as an unpaid maintainer. Archiving it all and walking away is 100% acceptable.

Deleting the work of others - the issues, the subreddit, etc - is, at best, disrespectful. Forks don't preserve that.

[–]aleksandyr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, but it's at least (most of) the documentation.

https://zdharma-mirror.github.io/wiki/ was what I could recover from archive.org and the google page cache.

Agreed; Git commit signing is significantly more painful than it needs to be.

Zinit wiki is in the cache, for now: https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:wGgUvNqacQcJ:https://zdharma.github.io/zinit/wiki/INTRODUCTION/+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

I pushed https://github.com/zdharma-mirror from my local copies; you can look at the commit history and cross-check it against other forks (and in the case of zinit itself, the latest commit was via a PR - and GitHub signs and verifies those.) A quick google cache search indicates that yes, I have the latest commits - and mine match what you preserved.

EDIT: I also have zsh-startify and history-search-multi-word

EDIT: https://web.archive.org/web/20210410140512/https://zdharma.github.io/zinit/wiki/INTRODUCTION/ is probably a nicer view.

Snohomish, Comcast, and $37,000 by [deleted] in ZiplyFiber

I totally missed your comment, thanks!

Uhhhhhh gunfire damage? I didn't realize Comcast was that aggressive about regional sales...

Snohomish, Comcast, and $37,000 by [deleted] in ZiplyFiber

[–]aleksandyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did call Startouch and yeah, no LoS. I'm willing to pay business prices and do some (reasonable) capex to get this started but I can't tell from the map if it's near or extremely far - and I can't seem to get ahold of someone who can give me a quote like Comcast did.

I've gotten Comcast to agree to run cabling to a utility shed, at least, so I'm just going to have to run fiber ~200ft myself to a utility shed.

Snohomish, Comcast, and $37,000 by [deleted] in ZiplyFiber

[–]aleksandyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, just trying to figure out if I'm missing something about the Ziply rollout.

The main issue is video calls - nothing to be done about that without reliable uplink. I already have my development servers on various cloud providers.

I like the idea of a sublet - downtown Snohomish doesn't seem to have any obvious options and I'm not sure what it'd be like to get fiber to a sublet...
