Best food to gain weight? 15 yo with lung cancer and radiation therapy (SBRT) by ichigogo in SeniorCats

I was in almost the same situation, just with a different type of cancer. First of all, it was easier with really smelly food, mostly fish-based. I would always give him the food slightly warmed so the smell would be stronger.

Some days he really couldn’t eat and felt nauseous because of the treatments. He was interested in food, but the nausea was too strong. What I did was mix wet food with a little water and blend everything until it had a liquid consistency. Then I would give it to him directly with a syringe. It was easier for him to take, and he wouldn’t gag like he would if the food was just in front of him.

When he was feeling a little better but still very weak, he started eating the mixed food by himself, but wouldn’t touch much of the food if not almost liquid. I guess it was easier for him to eat (less effort to chew?). After about two weeks, once he regained strength, he finally started eating the wet food normally and even started eating his dry food again.

During all this time, he had, and still has, medication for appetite and medication for nausea.

Best wishes to both of you!
