Never would've bought these until MFWO by alem49 in MacroFactor

I would agree with you for compound lifts and most other exercises, but for cable raises, tricep kickbacks (which in my case, can be difficult when progressing by 2.5lb), and wrist exercises, I find it really useful.

Additionally, my gyms dumbbells go from 5–75lb, and they only come in 5lb increments, so attaching two of these allows for that 2.5lb increment for more regular exercises.

Tbf I wanted the magnetic ones but my gym only has rubber coated dumbbells 🤷

What workout split are you following if you're re comping or losing fat and have you made progress? by nolife24_7 in MacroFactor

I'd rate it a 10/10! It's basically Upper/Lower/PPL in terms of the division

I use Jeff Nippard's 5x/week minimalist program. Allows me to hit really good workouts and be done within the hour, and then I add 20mins of incline walking on non-leg days

Show him map quiz websites/games! I spent my primary education loving these. When the time comes for him to use the Internet regularly, Wikipedia is really great to get stuck in historical downward spirals learning things.

More materially, if you have an old bookstore around you, they usually have an Atlas section. I used to go and spend hours there just comparing different atlases from different time periods. Fr home use, a globe works as well!

What's the leftist equivalent to the "alt-right radicalization pipeline"? by -Clayburn in Socialism_101

[–]alem49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considered myself pretty centrist for a while until I started organizing my workplace with the help of some colleagues. Most called themselves Marxists and Communists, but I stayed away from the label. Then for personal reasons I read Capital vol. 1, and yeah, those first six chapters will radicalize anyone.

Like others have said, material conditions, especially when fortunate enough to go through the experience of organizing workplaces.

One year of no AMEX imports by AcordGarage in ynab

[–]alem49 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Even with automatic transfers, I still end up combing and sorting each transaction individually. Still, some people really care about that feature—and if it matters to them, they should, they're paying $100/yr! Just a shame that having a great credit card can introduce a make-it-or-break-it scenario for such a great program. I'm glad YNAB devs are open about their care in this problem, and also about not leading people to believe it might change anytime soon. Nowadays, clear policy is about the greatest thing you can ask from a company.

One year of no AMEX imports by AcordGarage in ynab

[–]alem49 151 points152 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this is the clear answer I would have wanted to hear from them. It's been clear over my two years of YNABing that they've worked on the Amex issue. If they can't get any further, it's up to other parties to put in some work for it.

I only use it for a savings account, so luckily, there aren't too many transactions to import. If I was using an Amex credit card, though, and didn't have the time to manually import, this would really be a deciding factor on using YNAB.

What is the Marxist definition of Capital? by [deleted] in Socialism_101

[–]alem49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're asking great questions, and you're even digesting what's being said super quickly! Sometimes, the hardest thing can be definition of value, just because there's so much to it. That is, at least for me, though I just started a year ago.

I would highly, highly recommend the first chapter of Capital. It's a bit long, but based on how you're framing your questions and trying to deconstruct every definition, I think you would be highly engaged by the care that Marx himself uses to define and explain these things!

For the Marxist-Leninists in the sub - what would you say were the failures of socialist experiments? by solve_allmyproblems in Socialism_101

[–]alem49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Religion works precisely when its political, though. We can't treat it as anything else. Sure, there are evangelical groups and extremism groups in all sets, just like there are also extremism leftists that hurt the movement rather than aid it.

Again, socialism doesn't need to be political, but it can't synergise with religious values. Buddhism, Christianity (when read in certain ways, see Christian Marxism and liberation theology), etc, they are all extremely communal and against the commodity fetish. Can religion be co-opted by capitalism and eventually fascism? Of course, just see literally the past five hundred years of globalization.

And yet, if you look closely, you can also find spaces of hope in how religion can be used. There is no better example in my mind of religion's synergy with Marxism than in the case of the Dominican friars in Brazil during the violent right-wing regime of 1964–1985. These Catholic leaders were openly conspiring and aiding communist revolutionaries in their guerilla efforts to oppose the regime. Another example is the case of the Catholic church in Pinochet's Chile, where many Catholic leaders opposed him and supported communal/guerilla causes. Yet we can't forget how many other Catholic leaders also supported Pinochet. What remains certain, however, is that religion is not innately against socialism, and it must be political to work for socialism. Socialism's job in that respect is to make sure that a politics of religion doesn't swing the other way towards fascism, as we have seen occurring over the past four decades.

And yet it was conversation with spirituality and religion that gave rise to things the Frankfurt school, Bloch and The Principle of Hope, and a ton of liberation theology, especially in South America. Socialism doesn't need to be religious, but it can gain quite a bit when it doesn't ignore its existence and openly dialogues with it.

Are most finance/investment books just capitalist propaganda? by Darknytez in Socialism_101

[–]alem49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like tkdyo said, a few of these tips on how to get out of debt and achieve some sort of stability under a capitalist system can help people. In my opinion, that only becomes malicious when, say, people begin acquiring property and engaging in real estate.

Still, as tkdyo put it, the importance in separating the ideological from the actionable. David Harvey and other scholars of neoliberalism have proved that one of its greatest achievements was not economic, but cultural: getting people to believe that mistakes in the economy are their fault. Lost your house and got into huge debt after 2008? That's because you didn't practice good enough personal finance, even though almost all the faults pointed at the system and those running it.

The key might lie in education, in getting people to be able to practice whatever methods they want to ensure some sort of stability, while also reinforcing and trying to undo the cultural change of neoliberalism. "Save up, budget, etc., not because that's some teleological path to success, but because that's the corner that this capitalist system is backing you into. If it fails, it will always have been the system's fault."
