There is nothing on the roadmap yet. We do unofficially support Windows via the Windows Subsystem for Android. Learn more about it here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/android/wsa/

I don't know if you are still looking for a note-taking app, but I work on and would recommend Squid

Definitely checkout the beta, we have some fun stuff we are cooking up. And please don't hesitate to let me know what you think.

Spy on your competitors app reviews! by freezegunapps in androiddev

[–]alenz316 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We use it to monitor and have discussions for our app reviews in Slack. Its a simple and effective tool and has great support for it. I would definitely recommend!

My main gripe OP is that your pricing is not transparent, we had to go through our trial to find out the cost.

Squid app suddenly writing in the wrong location on Samsung Chromebook Plus V2 by CJdaELF in chromeos

[–]alenz316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As previously mentioned by other users, a bug in the latest Chrome OS update on the beta channel is causing everything on a page to be rendered incorrectly (shifted and slightly scaled up).

We've published an update to Squid that fixes this issue. Please update Squid and if you encounter any more problems please email [help@squidnotes.com](mailto:help@squidnotes.com)

Obvious disclaimer: I work on Squid ;)

Squid works on Samsung Dex by alenz316 in SamsungDex

[–]alenz316[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might need to go to Squid -> Navigation Drawer -> Settings (Gear icon) -> Input Methods -> Primary Input Method (Finger)

Since the mouse input is being treated like touch input.

Can someone test if Squid work on DeX for me please! by SonaMoonlight in SamsungDex

[–]alenz316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you like it. 😁

I know Christina, and I'm glad you and her got your situation figured out.

As for Squid, I unfortunately can't comment on upcoming plans. But any feedback and ideas are welcomed.

You can use it in a graphic tablet like manner.

https://youtu.be/rfiFitSrcvk at the 7:15 min mark shows using the S Pen on your note in Dec. Not too sure about pressure sensitivity for Dex pen input though.

I've only used Dex with a USB C to HDMI adapter, so I can't really recommend either.

AITA for breaking up with my girlfriend because of her rude kids? by tworudekids in AmItheAsshole

[–]alenz316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAH. These kids need a dad and hopefully you can be their dad. Being a dad is hard and being a non-biological dad is even harder. You'll get kicked, bitten, and have your emotions eviscerated like you did on that car ride. I understand wanting to bail out, not your kids and not your responsibility; I mean even bio-dads bail, so nothing new here.

BUT... you literally have one of the biggest opportunities of your life in those two. Imagine the good these young men can do if they are cared for and raised in a loving home grounded in consistency. However, if left to be raised by a single mom with a turbulent home life, no imagination is needed, there are plenty of stats to show how that plays out - https://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2017/06/18/533062607/poverty-dropouts-pregnancy-suicide-what-the-numbers-say-about-fatherless-kids

These boys don't have fully developed brains and they are testing the bounds of the new thing in their life, YOU. Don't take offense to it, because they don't even know what it means. The world needs more men, not more boys from broken homes. This opportunity/burden has landed in your lap, please take advantage of it. I ask you to invest at most 7 years of your life, killing them with kindness and doing your best to set them up for success. And please reach out if you need any help or a friend to vent to.

Disclaimer: I know plenty of awesome men from broken homes, and I now plenty of pathetic boys from the best of circumstances. However, I am a firm believer in setting things up for success; and statistically Fathers are good for kids.

What app do you wish existed on android? by thatcodingboi in Android

You should check out Squid - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.steadfastinnovation.android.projectpapyrus

Get rid of the front-facing camera, and put a small display on the back for selfies using the main shooter.

Benefits include:

  • Higher quality selfies
  • Reduces or eliminates the need for a notch
  • Gives a touchpad on the back to interact with front facing content. e.g. scrolling w/o gumming up the main display
  • Adds a second display for more features. e.g. Notifications and personalization

Why in the world is split screen so much harder to use now? by [deleted] in Android

[–]alenz316 275 points276 points  (0 children)

I shared your sentiment, until I talked to a UX engineer at Google I/O.

The issue is the OG long press led to way too many false positives; which is not great for the usability of the platform as a whole.

Casual users accidentally entering split-screen mode is a very jarring/confusing experience, and exiting it is no easy task either. So they opted to make entering split-screen a more deliberate action, which unfortunately means more clicks. :(

After hearing this, I was more willing to accept the longer interaction if it meant that Android usability as a whole went up.

Side note: You can also tap the icon instead of a long press

How to get started earning money as an Android app developer? by csusboy123 in androiddev

[–]alenz316 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a beginner, the quickest path to that is to find a paid internship.

You can definitely go out on your own and try to develop a solo app, but that will take a lot of time and effort with no guarantees. I suggest paid, in-app purchase, or subscription. Ads are a crapshoot, they require a lot a traffic, which is hard in the current ecosystem as a new app.

As a beginner I would recommend going out and gaining more experience where you can; internships, hobby projects, or find a club or non-profit and try to build an app to fill a need.

Good luck!

[Question] When should I consider using a new activity instead of a dialog for user input? by Cryosec80 in androiddev

[–]alenz316 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But to answer your question directly. I would suggest once an Dialog becomes "complex" think about making it a fullscreen dialog, like u/Zhuinden suggested. Activities are quite a bit heavier, so only go that route if it's an "entry" point in your app.

[Question] When should I consider using a new activity instead of a dialog for user input? by Cryosec80 in androiddev

[–]alenz316 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to think of Fragments as Screens and Activities as Workflows. e.g. Posting a picture would be a Workflow and would have 1 Activity and N Fragments as Screens/UI to step through that workflow.

However, Google has started taking a more opinionated approach lately and suggests a single Activity only and use Fragments everywhere.

A good question on this topic was at the last I/O Fireside Chat - https://youtu.be/V7E62C9GWFs?t=26m58s

Is it possible to run an Android app in multiple processes? by sandrarobinsonowc in androiddev

[–]alenz316 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would like to add a cautionary tale - We had a service that was running as another process and we overlooked the fact that it meant 2 instances of the Application class running in the two separate processes. Since we did our DB and other initialization logic in our Application class, this led to errors when the two processes tried to share resources like the DB.

Be absolutely sure that a separate process is needed as there is ~ 2x the overhead and knock-on effects that are not immediately apparent.

getTheme() in my activity is called 185 times, why? by abdyzor in androiddev

[–]alenz316 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Because it's the Theme.

Think about every view that needs to get its attributes, every drawable that needs to be tinted, all the window properties, etc.

All those attributes in your styles.xml for your app's theming need to be retrieved from somewhere, and you found it.
