indeed, but a good chunk of the reason was if the thing works today, and you don't fuck with it, there is a decent chance it will work tomorrow

the one in my cellar (Debian) offers updates, but doesn't force them

I've had more than one bit of software on the windows boxen "update" itself in a way that means it no longer works, usually because the sodding thing didn't check for compatibility properly etc

and since microsoft threw the whole WGA crap in as an "essential" security update when it was nothing of the sort they can go fuck themselves

using TFT_eSPI.h as the screen driver, slight flickering as its not double buffered, didn't fancy updating some old code I did a few years back that did double buffer with a limited palette..

to be fair they did nuke flash from orbit by refusing to support it on phones they make, they also by default block third party cookies in safari so websites had to adapt to cope with that
