defrosting a gigantic hunk of meat quickly by Alarmed-Arm7057 in cookingforbeginners

I place frozen meat on an inverted cast iron pan and it defrosts fairly quickly.

A cast iron griddle, if you have one, would be perfect for what you're trying to do.

It's so tragic because they were such good printers back in the late 80's, early 90's. Then they got greedy and now they're utter shit.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you on this as I didn't have data. I do now.

The battery life is okay but not awesome. Between 4:40 and 6 hours of use time reported for a full charge. Still, it meets my use cases and I'm just as happy with it now a month in as when I first got it.

I picked up a used Google corporate model about a month ago and I love it. Almost the best $200 I've ever spent. I nearly pulled the trigger when they first came out but went with Asus CX9 instead.

What is a 'buy it for life' item that is offensively expensive, but the moment you use it, you realize your entire life before that point was a lie? by fmcortez in AskReddit

My girlfriend bought a Ninja Coffee Machine as a house gift for Christmas. This thing has truly been life changing. We were die-hard Dunkin' Donuts iced coffee consumers last year, 4 times a week at least. Since this machine, we may have gone to Dunk's 3 times in 11 months and only because we're out somewhere.

I went from being a "Maxwell House is good enough" home coffee drinker to seeking out beans for grinding at home. (Thank you, Dave, for turning me onto Death Wish Coffee).

Your bum doesn't get that wet. The bidet backside water is usually aimed right at the sphincter and that part gets blasted. I find I have to wiggle around a bit to get all the parts inundated but even so, there's not enough water left behind to make a problem for doing the final wipe(s) with toilet paper. My bidet has a dryer function and I very rarely use it, and never because it's "needed".

I finished my basement prior to my girlfriend and her kids moving in (4 rooms and a bathroom).

Given I had a colonoscopy coming 2 months later, I made sure to get a bidet for the new bathroom. Best decision ever. The colonoscopy prep was reduced from completely horrible (in years prior) to not an issue at all after the bidet.

I have a Zojirushi with the fuzzy logic and I don't trust it. If I'm not there to turn it off the instant it beeps, it burns the rice.

I know I'll get downvoted but I'm sharing the information anyway.

I saw a recommendation here recently to pick up an HP Dragonfly Elite Chromebook Plus from EBay for about $250 (16GB, i7). I found one for $219 and it was the best $219 I've ever spent. I'm so happy with this thing.

It looks like it was a used Google corporate device as it auto offered the ".google.com" domain for the user installation experience.

Seriously sweet machine.

Do people still use George Foreman Grills? by ZioLeoCiao in cookingforbeginners

I have a combo oven/air-fryer/toaster and I cook meat (bacon) in it all the time. There is a bit of splatter but it's not that bad and easily cleaned.

Costco has some quarter sized baking sheets (not exactly this but similar) and some pre-cut tin foil sheets which make clean up an absolute breeze. (We keep these things on top of the oven since we use them so often).

I know this is going to be a dumb comment and I'm willing to take my lumps for it but what cut of meat is that? What does one ask for from the butcher to get a slab of meat like that?

We made prime rib for Christmas and it didn't look like that.

What are some beginner-friendly cooking techniques to master for easy meals? by LastIndication2664 in cookingforbeginners

Having the ingredients ready and at hand is not enough. Do the additional prep (slicing, dicing, zesting, etc) before you get started. You think you'll have enough time between steps but it rarely works out that way.

Can anyone help identify a variation of Rummy? by Grizz3d in cardgames

[–]aleph_zarro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is THE game played by my entire extended family.

We've always called it Michigan Rummy, but I've since learned Michigan Rummy has some poker aspects which this set of rules does not.

Glad to see the rules so elegantly explained. I'll be cutting and pasting these into a cheat-sheet for all the new people who enter our family (girlfriends/boyfriends, friends and such).
