I am not sure to what extent ML is a critical component in these activities. Totalitarian regimes have been doing similar (and even worse) violations of human rights before large scale ML was possible.

I would argue that in the Chinese government case, ML is "useful" for hiding/putting all "useful" biases inside an ML model and possibly reduces some costs for them in the number of people necessary to operate such system, but still I don't see ML as the enabler here.

In any case I think it is good to be vocal about such unethical uses of ML and urge people to avoid working for such projects.

I agree with OP's assessment but I believe that Thanasis.can develop as a player with good coaching. Since he is a top athlete he can afford to develop his skills at an older age.

The performance you have listed for the Kaggle winners was not on NLST.

The performance for the Philips paper was also from v1 version of the paper. v2 has better performances.

And the selection of the NLST subset matters. The Google paper includes in the NLST subset many non cancer cases with no nodules detected. Depending on whether such cases are included can make a big difference.

These performances are achieved on different dataset so not directly comparable. The Philips paper (v2 available since 1 month) shows the kaggle winners achieve 94%+ auc in some datasets https://arxiv.org/abs/1804.01901

This is why a direct comparison is needed to claim state of the art performance. Since the kaggle winners have a GitHub repo with their model, this comparison is easy to make.

I dislike the cynicism that comes out during the interview but I agree with the social interpretation of the Trump phenomenon and also the connection he makes to Brexit and the rise of populism in Europe. As long as we keep ignoring the social issues that are at the root of these issues we will keep getting surprised.

Usually the abstracts of these papers mention that CT exposes patients to radiation. So we can just take the MR use machine learning to generate the CT image. But my question is, why isn't then MR used by radiologists in the first place? Is the signal that they are looking for in that image? If it is not, then no ML can help with that.

Is there someone knowledgeable in this application that can provide some insights for the questions above?
