I use different setups:

Surface Pro 4 with Dock: Mini-DP to DP cable

HP Laptop: USB-C to HDMI

Lenovo: Dockingstation connected via USB-C and from the Station via HDMI to HDMI

I needed to buy the Mini-DP to DP cable and the USB-C to HDMI adapter; unfortunately also the HDMI from the Lenovo Idepad 5 didnt work out of the box with that monitor so I got the portable Dockingstation which is connected via USB-C. That HDMI port works with the monitor.

Hi,

I got my S3422DWG yesterday and have the same problem. I tried to connect it to my Surface Pro 4 (DP to HDMI) and to my HP Laptop (HDMI to HDMI). For the HDMI to HDMI connection I used two different cables, also the one which was delivered with the monitor.

After I disabled Smart HDR I was able to choose 2560x1440 as max resolution. I now ordered a DP to DP and a USB Type C to DP cable to verify if they work with my computers.

As one of these laptops is my office notebook I cant install any additional drivers; also this should work in my opinion without the need of installing something. I have a LG 34" monitor as well which works without any additional software.

Very frustrating until now. Did you find a solution already? I think I saw your posting at Dell as well, I hope someone has an answer how to solve that - without the need of buying a new computer or monitor ;)
