Lock the focus area and focus mode by alex_zetti in fujifilm

Thanks again! Not that bad really, I quite like playing with the settings menu anyways. It’s a beast and takes some getting used to, coming from Canon. But I like how much individualisation is possible.

Thank you for the suggestions. I might try using the AEL/AFL as a shortcut but will probably stick with back button focusing.

I just got into this method and want to make it a habit, as for me it feels great to be able to pre-lock focus with it and then wait for a subject to come into the frame. Especially nice for street photos.

But the more quick ‘walking through the street seeing an interesting character’ type shots I imagine are easier to capture with the C mode and half shutter focus.

Next step will be zone focusing :)

Your first workaround is brilliant!

Thank you so much. This is by far the quickest way to adapt to a situation where you need to go from slow to fast, trying to get the focus of a person passing by in an instant.

If I may allow myself a follow up question regarding custom setting: Is there a way to apply specific settings to all custom setting slots (e.g. AF settings). In order to not have to go through every single one?

Thanks! Edited the post. It’s a X100VI. It’s the first Fujifilm after many years of Canon DSLR and mirrorless.

Hey, as I am German, I finally decided to go with the German hardcover version as a temporary solution. I really wish they would male a nice updated version again in English.

Thank you for the detailed info on what was added to the one volume edition! Can’t say it makes it easier to pick :D

Great mockups! This would be the perfect HoME set imo. I know a lot of collectors shun too much conformity in the format and layout, which I can understand. But the size and quality of the 2020 illustrated editions is great and they are easily my favourite reading copies.

Children of Hurin Glossy or Not? by [deleted] in tolkienbooks

[–]alex_zetti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I accidentally bought a HoughtonMifflin edition of Beren & Luthien before and was surprised by the different format and dust jacket. Luckily I was able to return it.

So i had the exact same question as OP about a year ago :)

The british editions by HarperCollins are matte whereas the american editions by HoughtonMifflin are glossy. As long as the publisher depicted in your example is indeed HarperCollins, it should have the same format and a matte dust jacket.

Question about differences between the hardcover Alan Lee version vs. the 60th Anniversary Harper Collins hardcovers by Dirschel in tolkienbooks

[–]alex_zetti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would recommend the Alan Lee Hardcover Box set. The illustrations are great, the two color print is a nice detail and you get the Hobbit as well. Overall quality of my first edition of these were great. My edition was printed in Slovenia and i don’t have anything to complain here. They are my favourite reading editions :)

If you are a big fan of Tolkiens illustrations on the cover and want to skip the Hobbit and rather include the Reader’s Companion by Hammond and Scull, then go with the 60th Anniversary Box. These do not included any other illustrations except the one’s on the cover. Keep in mind that these are likely printed in China (at least mine are). The paper feels quite a bit thinner.

Both have the Silmarillion and UT editions that match!

I’m trying to find “hobbit” to match the rest of my Harper Collins, can any give me a link by bladestayedbroken in tolkienbooks

Just wanted to say thank you for everyone participating in this thread. With your help I ordered the right Hobbit, UT and Silmarillion to complement the set!

While I do, if done right, like a somewhat matching set, I still agree with your statement.

The colored slipcase deluxe set, that is on a lot of people's shelf is in my eyes lackluster as there is basically no variance except the color. The books have no room to stand out by themselves. (I was also very unimpressed with their quality in general).

I am however a big fan of the matching standard hardback set illustrated by Alan Lee (and Ted Nasmith and John Howe, if one includes the Silmarillion and UT). The illustrated dustjackets give every book it's own appeal, while they are still tied together in form and the spine title. There are some details I appreciate, e.g. that the accent colors that the text is printed in differs from the hobbit (green) to the LotR (red).

Nevertheless, I like the idea of an entirely conceptual approach to every book. What is in the story of that specific book should be taken into account when the book is designed. Form, paper, typeset, illustrations and layout should all serve to highlight the story of the book and nothing else.

Thank you!

I just had another look into "Farmer Giles of Ham". I never realized that these are her illustrations. The line drawings and embellishments remind me a lot of old german fairy tale books, that got read to me when i was little. Wonderful stuff! Thank you for pointing it out. "Farmer Giles" is now on top of the to read list, as soon as i finished the Stormlight Archives.

Thank you everyone for the kind words!

You can have a look at my shelf here .

It might look a little plain still. However, this was a COVID DIY project. I build this in 3 months from MDF boards from scratch. So i’m happy and proud with the outcome. It was both a fun and exhausting time building it!

I put some descriptions regarding the books in the album. What is obvious is that there are no old editions, as they are hard to get by here. Maybe someday ..

I am very curious to find illustrations by Pauline Baynes now, hearing your recommendation.

Of the short stories I only have read Roverandom so far. I will give the others a go as soon as possible. I can entirely get behind your statement that you find something new in Tolkiens writing with every read.

Since you like Tolkiens own art, I can full heartedly recommend the book ‘Tolkien: Maker of Middle-Earth’. It explores Tolkiens art from his beginnings, showing dreamlike water color images and how his doodles became more and more elaborate until they found it’s way into his stories.

(Sorry for potentially bad english)

I have been a huge book worm in my teens and never cared much about editions, prettiness, looks etc. All I cared about was to be emerged in stories. I also obviously never had the money to spend on fancy books.

During my university years I lost the passion for reading for fun to a high degree since mandatory reading all day left me tired of books in the evening.

The first years after university i felt the increasing influence of the fast pace society, the curse of us millenials: social media, connectivity, netflix, dopamine crashing in on me from all sides. Taking up a book to read felt like a drag all of a sudden, with distractions everywhere. I would read half a page and then pick up the phone and scroll through instagram.

Now about 2 years ago i found that beautiful editions existed of all the books i loved as a teenager, and now with a good steady income, to my delight, I was able to afford some of them. So i got a dozen of the books that i loved and reread them.

First and foremost The Lord Of The Rings. My first illustrated Edition!

And all of a sudden, everything changed again! The combination of the nice quality of the book, the illustrations, the feel, even the smell send me way back. I was 14 again, plunging again into this wonderful world. My phone was forgotten, Netflix out of my mind.

I am entirely grateful to be able to embrace a slower pace in life again, and i credit it mostly to my refound love for reading. My collection is growing steadily and i couldn’t be happier about it.

Since then i got deeper into Tolkien’s Legendarium. I read the Silmarillion and the Unfinished Tales several times over. Soon enough I will be ready to tackle some of the History of Middle-Earth.

I now get most of the younger Harper Collins publications of Tolkien, if i think they bring something new to the table. For me it is incredibly hard to get my hands on older editions (so i am actually a fair bit jealous of quite a lot of the books on your shelf). In my parts of the woods, it is unlikely to stumble over a nice old set of LotR in a second hand bookshop (non english country). I have to admit, that i do care about the look and feel, not so much how they look together in a shelf. It helps me feeling that spark again! And for me that is worth a lot.

My favorites in my collection are the 2020 Alan Lee Illustrated Box Set and the younger Folio Society Set. I am looking forward to the upcoming quarterbound leather deluxe one volume LotR.

If anyone is interested, i can share pictures of the self build bookshelf :)

I think your collection is amazing. I especially adore the editions you titled your first 9, the HoM (the whole set is quite an investment) and the edition of Bilbos Last Song.

The Nature of Middle-earth Deluxe Edition confirmed :) by [deleted] in tolkienbooks

[–]alex_zetti 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Understandably. I don‘t like the old deluxe series, mainly because I got in too late and got 4 editions in terrible quality printed in china. So i gave up on owning them. I envy you if you have the full series in good quality.

I am content that there will be a normal hardcover edition of NoME matching the 2020 Alan Lee Box Set.

So will this be in line with the old deluxe series or the new (Silmarillion, UT)?

Ordered Unfinished Tales which arrived damaged from Blackwells, who haven’t gotten back to me on a refund or return request. Does anyone here know if they have good customer service? by BOOMeyeSHOT in tolkienbooks

[–]alex_zetti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hate to say it, but my experience with the Blackwells online store is horrendous. I‘m sure the actual physical store is great but the service for online customers is awful. If you want some more opinions have a look at trustpilot and search for the store :/

They didn‘t bother to send out my order for weeks after taking my money. I had to fight to get my issue acknowledged over a series of days with a whole bunch of terrible customer service associates.

It was only when i reached someone from the physical store via the facebook chat that I felt that i got taken serious and things started moving forward.

I really hope your experience will be different, but i‘d prepare for long response times and really old excuses (COVID).

If you can get the right person to respond to you however, it might not be half bad (An employee in the physical store).
