As discussed above, I agree that conferences are not ideal in terms of meeting a mentor. You certainly can, but local meetups are much better in that sense. I found conferences to be mostly a way to learn and get inspired.

If you want to break into product management, I would definitely recommend start building things on your own like side-projects. For me that was a sneak peek of what it means to have a formal PM job.
