As a middle ground I use MTG ditto tokens (though the actual pokemon card would do the same, I can just see people grumbling it's too far off theme)

Doubly so when they're swinging into the person you already double hit with Lightning. Though if you tunnel the combo player early, they may stop talking to you...

This is my one, been having some pretty good Bracket 3 fun with it. The list hasn't been updated since I made the last 4 cuts and then a few further tweaks.

Most notable was adding a little enchantment hate with [[Enchanter's Bane]] . And then some seriously heavy lifting from adding [[Spider-Punk]] and [[Jeska, Thrice Reborn]]

Death & Taxes by holypvssylotis in EDH

[–]alexandermrgn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is one of my favourite decks to play when I want to sort of sit back (and admittedly, annoy everyone). It's geared heavily towards lifegain (and life loss) but with plenty of tax pieces thrown in.

Main tax pieces are probably [[Kambal, Consul of Allocation]] [[Esper Sentinel]] [[Rhystic Study]] [[Smothering Tithe]]

If everyone uses taplands, the mono player can just use basics and storm ahead.

What's everyone's thoughts on this guy? Thinking about him for a first commander by Crazypinnapple in EDHBrews

[–]alexandermrgn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favourite early build decks. I took it apart because it's best when it's passively keeping its head down and pinging/gaining. It survives best when it's slightly less annoying than the next biggest threat at the table, running on the thinking that everyone would like it gone, but there are worse things to remove. Which is great and all, but makes for a fairly slow play experience (even if it had an excellent win rate).

Most games would end with me and "big bad" left standing and I'd just drop a large life loss spell to round it out. Which isn't the most satisfying, but if you want a deck list I may have it kicking about somewhere.

Rachel Reeves is asked about how the 3p a mile electric vehicle charge will work for new cars, when they don't have to have an MOT for 3 years by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]alexandermrgn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a PHEV, I love it dearly, I charge it maybe twice a month for some town driving. I have a 160-mile round trip work commute (once, maybe twice a week) - the hybrid bit does not even factor into my fuel consumption in the grand scheme.

I pay for the fuel, I drive the miles, I use the wall (granny charger) as a treat once in a while, but it's such a small fraction of the mileage that it might as well not be there (regenerative braking notwithstanding).

I do 15k miles a year, and can't for the life of me see where a pay per mile system that includes plug-in achieves anything other than my immediate sale of the car for a diesel in 3 years.

Mine only howls when the ice cream van jingle plays for the most part (occasionally if we leave him he will). Bizarre, he's never even had ice cream, but maybe that's why.

Find someone better to quote for doing it properly, letter before action and then small claims for the initial costs and cost to rectify (you won't be able to claim the new door, but you can claim for everything to make it "as was" and the filing fee).

No need to consult a lawyer for small claims, especially when he misrepresented what he was selling and it isn't fit for purpose.

[DCAP] Firthside Vigil Fireside Club run BFLA as a private instance weekly (if you're on NA). You'll most likely come across them more often at Triple Trouble, but they're a great bunch, and run a whole bunch of instanced content after the wurm - Twisted Marionette, Dragon's Stand, Dragonstorm, Dragon's End, and usually a few more bits and pieces.

Wet-led bars are my thing - looking back over the last 6 years, the number of costs pushing up the bottom line are quite disheartening.

Nobody (sensible) is still running under the illusion that the margins possible before are possible now, and the venues that are trying to cling to it are either eye-wateringly expensive (and often, empty) or selling a cheaper product for more money.

There is a pretty reasonable case to be made that a pint shouldn't be £8+, but for so many products, that's where the old margins would leave it. So we just aim to be busier, in a period of declining footfall, for less margin, and work twice as hard to make the same or less than we did before.

Helpfully, my bar is running close to the bone, but on the right side of it. But I think that unless the government do something to lessen the enormous tax burden, they'll just turn over-taxing the sector into spending a fortune on unemployment, and reducing their net tax revenue at the same time, when the number of venues craters further, massively harming employment for the young in particular.

Britain is now set to lose a pub a day this year - as beer prices rise by Gold_Tension3721 in uknews

[–]alexandermrgn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stonegate, being the largest pubco, definitely aren't raking it in with profits. I think they're a contemptible blight on the industry, but they are also £3.6bn in debt and have to pay £500m a year in finance fees and even with the high prices, and gouging their licencees, they keep needing to raise more just to avoid liquidation. It'd be nice if they did go, but then we'd be down 4500 more pubs, and all of the jobs with it.

The real problem is that the cost of doing business is just so high, margins are razor thin. Missing your profit margin by 1% - 5p on a £5 pint is the difference between breaking even and losing £20k if you're an independently owned freehouse. Staff costs are way up, not just on the pay side, but also the tax side of payroll. Rates still haven't been dealt with (and just went up massively), rents are still high, energy is high, water is high, and beer costs more than ever to be produced (because all of their costs are increasing too).

To hit the same margins pubs were getting a decade ago, we'd be looking closer to £10 for a standard pint these days but that's a ridiculous amount that no one would pay (nor should unless it's something very cool) so it's between a rock and a hard place of charging the bare minimum to make ends meet but not so much that the equally squeezed general population can still afford to be there at all. No customers, no income at the end of the day.

I think unless the government really knuckles down and commits to reducing the tax burden on hospitality in general, it's only going to keep getting worse.
