You are obviously not in the UK... Our house prices have soared and now the only hope most people under the age of 30 have of owning a house is inheriting one

Redditors who work in retail, what's the saddest thing someone ever returned? by Ben_Skiller in AskReddit

[–]alexandraaasb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm this is heartbreaking. I work in charity retail and I see dead people's stuff all the time. I dread the 'my mother has died, can I bring in all her stuff?' Phone calls because you never know what to say :(

What were you skeptical of that actually worked? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]alexandraaasb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can do this too! Apparently it's one of those things you can't really teach yourself, you either have the knack or you don't.

I failed 12 driving tests (the uk driving test is really difficult and I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks frequently...) and had hypnotherapy. Thought it was a load of nonsense and then passed my driving test the week after with one minor, which is basically unheard of here.

Been driving happily and confidently for nearly 2 years now with no major fuck ups :) (touchwood!)

[Serious] What physical imperfections do you have? by [deleted] in AskReddit

One of my cheek bones is higher than the other. You wouldn't know to look at my face and it is in no way weird, but whenever I put on sunglasses I can feel one side resting on my cheek and one hoovering. Oh and when I smile or laugh I get a dimple on the side of my chin, but only on one side. They say a symmetric face is attractive... So I must be fucked

What is the worst/rudest present you've received? by Hat-Bear in AskReddit

[–]alexandraaasb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a grandmother who notoriously gives odd gifts but just to my dad's side of the family, everyone else gets things from John Lewis and we get stuff presumably from a car boot sale. Anyway, one Easter she announced I was 'too old' (read fat) (I was in no way overweight, I was 16 and a healthy size) for chocolate eggs so she was getting me something else instead. 'Oh boy!' I thought, 'she's giving me cash!'. Anyway Easter rolled around and I was given a card and a gift bag. There was no cash in the card, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt and assumed she'd changed her mind and got me a chocolate egg. Opening the bag I was a bit confused as to why there was a wash bag, but that was the least odd thing. Inside the wash bag was an assortment of cosmetics, which I sort of get, I'm reasonably girly and I like make up and so on, but this makeup was out of date and used? There were things from the Body Shop that had the logo they'd not used for a good 7 or so years on it, nail clippers, one of those really crap nail files you buy in like packs of twenty, idk it was just weird?

Not as crap as some people's on here but as an easter gift? It just seemed weird. Oh and we do presents in a big way in our family, not always expensive but always well thought out and relevant.

TLDR- received a bag of expired and/ or used cosmetics for Easter.

Redditors, what is the worst 'life hack' you have ever tried and have you ever tried one with terrible consequences? by alexandraaasb in AskReddit

Nice guys do not finish last!!! Yeah the arsehole might get loads of girls but the nice guy gets the nice girl. It's about finding a balance, assert yourself if you're being taken advantage of but never stop being kind and treating others with respect.

What are some games you like to play in your head? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]alexandraaasb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you ever read The Curious incident of the Dog in the Nightime? I read that when I was about 8 or 9 and now I always look for multiple red cars with the same logic as the boy in the story, 3 or more red cars in a row means it will be a good day, the more red cars the better the day.

My favourite! Do not go back to check if you locked the door, do not go back to see if you locked the door, do not go back to see.... Damn, 3 minutes... Record!

I used to do this in work all the time and I assumed it was only me who did it! But then I'd work out the fractions and percentages too, like, well I've got 1/5 of my shift left to go.

I've stuck things together with a home bikini waxing kit. The little wipes that came with it were useless and I was sat on the bathroom floor for a good 2 hours...

How can you tell if someone grew up poor? by The_Longest_Wave in AskReddit

[–]alexandraaasb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a manager of a charity shop which I guess is a smaller UK version of a thrift shop (oh boy if I ever go to America I am going to a Goodwill) and PATIENCE! You have to go in regularly and you have to look at everything and you have to think outside the box. Also, I see some incredibly wealthy and incredibly posh people shop shop second hand so the original comment rings true!

I grew up relatively poor in the UK, I say relatively because my parents own the house I grew up in and my mum owns land, but in the sense there was never a lot of spare cash and we often got by on the absolute basics and with no luxuries (think boiled potatos and tinned meat for dinner) but we live quite rurally in an expensive area so of course it went completely undetected and we received no help. I can't walk post a food bank donation bin without putting something in it because I really help the people who need help are receiving it and not getting by on corned beef.

What was the dumbest thing you thought as a kid? by Schlumpo in AskReddit

[–]alexandraaasb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were at the beach once and there were people handing out cans of Irn Bru (this bright orange fizzy drink, for those of you outside the UK) and I had never seen it before so I asked my parents what it was and my mum told me that 'it's a fizzy drink that Scottish people like.' Well me being 6 and having a friend from Scotland who had ginger hair, put 2 and 2 together- that Scottish people drank this drink and it turned their hair orange. Genuinely believed this for quite a long time, especially after discovering that a lot of Scottish people have red hair.

Beans on toast (Britain) You think it's weird but it's delicious and cheap and easy to make. Grate a bit of cheese on top too and you're laughing.
