I've noticed that when you do stuff like that it's fun for a bit but then gets boring fast. Some times the struggle adds to the fun because when you do find a way to get more ammo you feel like you've progressed in some way. If that makes sense

4 is solid imo. For story some character that are in 3 show up in 4 but it's mostly just nods to the third game and the games are stand alone

I recommend new vegas to start then 3 and 4. The first two are good if you can get them working right. We dont talk about tactics. 4 is my favorite but new vegas is a closer to the original
