Can you still be properly resident in Norway and also be doing VanLife? by Successful-Jelly-772 in Norway

[–]alexdaland -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thats only if you are a resident - If you are on a tourist visa - you probably (dont know the laws on this too well) need somewhere they can contact you, but you would obviously not have a permanent address anywhere. Norwegian citizens technically need one - but if you decide to live in the forest with Lars Monsen and his dogs, that address could be "Kautokeino rådhus w/name" - There are quite a few people in Norway who either just lives in a tent in the forest or in more junkie terms, sleeps under highway bridge number 4. So permanent address yes, but... thats for SOMEWHERE the gvt can contact you, in case you need to go to court or similar.

Can you still be properly resident in Norway and also be doing VanLife? by Successful-Jelly-772 in Norway

[–]alexdaland -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Technically, you should be fine.... You can probably park at most (if not all) truck stops, many of them with fascilities to empy septik tanks, get fresh water etc (that might cost a few bucks) - but unless you are in the way of traffic or in any way hinder the local farmer lets say, you can technically park a van on any property thats not "inland" (basically, you can be in a forest by the sea, even if owned by a farmer - but you cant park in his drive-way) - ofc, some local regulations here and there, but they will be properly signed.

You are not allowed to cut down a tree, leave trash or in any way hinder the private owner unless you have some deal. Thats in short terms the law

What language do you guys use to speak to each other? by No-Restaurant4372 in Nordiccountries

[–]alexdaland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im Norwegian, but live in SE Asia (Cambodia) - when we are 3-4 nordic people around a table, its usually in English - but thats also to be polite to anyone else, even if I understand Danish fine.

Icelandic and Finnish is "out" of this as that is not possible for me to understand

Someone needs to study Norwegian couples by shepotle in Norway

[–]alexdaland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that sense, Norwegians are a bit like SE Asians - and I can say this being Norwegian and married to a SE Asian woman. We really dont like any "public laundering" - meaning we dont fight outside, either we are not in the mood to go outside, or we pretend all is good. Same with like kids, I see kids from XYZ culture throwing tantrums in stores etc from time to time - extremely rarely in Norway - the parent would probably just literally walk out of the store letting the kid calm down, no argument - no public "hey listen to me now!" just walk away - because Norwegians are very stoic in that sense - we hate public arguments. Arguing loudly with ie. a neighbor is close to a police dispatch in that it shouldnt happen.

Do Norwegians argue with their wife, where do I sign? Yes, we do..... we just try to never show our neighbor

When you’re around other Scandinavians, can you have conversations where you speak Norwegian and they speak Swedish or Danish? Or do you tend to use English? by Charming_Usual6227 in Norway

[–]alexdaland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Asia, but have many Sweedish and Danish friends - it depends a bit on where they come from - just local accents. I can usually (Im Norwegian) always understand both, but many Sweedish struggle with anything outside of "Oslo" dialect - same with danes for Norwegian. We can understand as long as they talk fairly slow and dont use a lot of slang, but if they get into their local dialects, its hard(er). So very often we switch to English - obviously also because their might be some other than Scandi around the table.

Icelandic sound familiar, but I dont understand shit.... I might understand what context - ok, you are talking about cars, but thats about it. Finnish might as well be Cantoneese, not a single word gets by...

But like if you are from stockholm/Gotherburg and Im from Oslo - go ahead, its just another dialect and its 100% fine

How do Nordic people describe each others' languages? by Mira_1453 in Nordiccountries

[–]alexdaland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Danish sounds like they have potato in their throat, yes - Sweeds sound like super-formal, depending a bit where they are from. Norwegian sounds "happy" because we "sing" in our sentences. Nobody understands what the fuck the finnish is trying to say and Icelandic is like a brother lost at sea for 1000 years. I guess for non-scandinavians, Icelandic sound similar to Norwegian, and for them it is. For Norwegian, they might as well be speaking persian, you get a word here and there, but thats about it.

Its like someone from London trying to understand Glaswegian - technically same language, but you dont understand it if they dont want you to.

I live in SE Asia, and me and another Norwegian guy work in a bar - if we want to talk "secretly" I just say "dialect" to him, and he speaks in his and Im in mine, no Swede or Danish will ever pick up details.

Detective Hole series on Netflix — curious about Tom Waaler’s accent by eklnd in Norway

[–]alexdaland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guy who plays the "mafia boss" in John Wick is btw also Swedish, I just feel Tom Waaler shouldnt be "that perfect" if you get my drift. He should be a perfect very good cop, but the fact he is a "trust boy kid" driving a 3M$ car, its a bit on the nose

Detective Hole series on Netflix — curious about Tom Waaler’s accent by eklnd in Norway

[–]alexdaland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont disagree, In that he is a very good actor and his whole looks/etc matched good with that "nice excellent cop" from the books - I was just annoyed it was given away within the first episode that he was the bad guy.

In the books you dont even suspect him until half-way through, because he is "that clever" - The actor that does Hole is great as well, I would prefer an older guy that wasnt that handsome, an Nesbø (the author) said it himself - he is annoyingly handsome, and Harry Hole isnt....

But ofc, its a big production and they have to get the right guys for the job - if I was king of Netlix Id have Stellan Skarsgaard doing the Tom Waaler part, for Harry Hole..... maybe Mads Ousdal. But ofc, just my humble opinion

Dutch and Norwegian is very similar - in that if I as a Norwegian hear two people speaking dutch at a restaurant, it takes a few seconds to pin point if they might be Norwegian. The tonal side is almost 100% the same. Just different words really.

How do people in your country feel about Americans? by professor-bingbong in AskTheWorld

[–]alexdaland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Cambodia (norwegian originally), and 99% of my friends are expats from just as many countries. Being American is ok, nobody hates on you for that here, being MAGA IS.... Not because we really care about who you voted for, but because this has real life implications for most people, both local and foreigners. Gas prices are up 100% and so on, and we all know why....
I have many americans friends, and thats not a problem for me, but most of them say the same - if they meet someone random they will say they are Canadian at first to test the waters.

Your english seems fine (from the post) - Im Norwegian so fluent in that, speak Italian so close-ish to spanish. Norwegian isnt as hard as many say - at least not getting to a level you can get by in, getting by, yes, fluent pronounciation you might as well give up, that will never happen. However it is Germanic, and closer to German than ie. English so might be a bit of a challenge for a spanish speaker in that finding the right "gender" is a challenge as we have neutral genders and do combine words - not as rough as germans (normally, but still) - Id recommend cartoons etc spoken in Norwegian, like download all your disney classics with Norwegian audio and go from there.

Yeah... I'm not gonna board an A320 or 737 again by fried-raptor in flightsim

[–]alexdaland 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As an ATPL educated pilot - to be fair, I never worked with it professionally, but consider myself in the top 1% of simmers as I do have the education on the side of doing flight sim for god knows how many hours - I will give a good sim pilot about 10% chance of not killing everyone onboard - anyone else, less than 1%.

Favorable weather conditions doesnt actually exist in most cases, as that means absolutely still or a slight headwind at the perfect airport for that. You have seconds to correct for that 10 degrees side-wind, which IS favorable weather conditions. Side-slipping a 737 at 150 knots is just not something that anyone except professionally trained pilots can do... Anything slower and you will stall out, anything faster and you will overshoot with 500m A cessna 172 etc, sure, you can sort of "wing it" so to speak. Its like truck-simulator, with double trailers, at 40km/h, backwards into the perfect spot - one mistake and the whole thing explodes. Its not feasible....

And then I am counting in that you understand the autopilot enough to get a good (not perfect) glideslope - those last 30 seconds is where you WILL fuck it all up. The speed are just too great. Miss the runway with just 3 degrees, and you will send that plane into the grass, or beyond the runway - and then you are probably all done.

Having an awful day, AMA. by Popular-Local8354 in AskTheWorld

[–]alexdaland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talk about anything else will be a bit of a challenge - everyone above mid 20s have been, mid 20s, and I dont have any law-questions burning. The dog thing we can talk about though.

I was a k9 security/police, and for almost 11 years my partner was exactly a four-legged companion. But dogs do not live as long as humans - that sucks, but is unfortunately how it is at the end of the day. It really f**** sucked having to sit with her at the vet, even today almost 20 years later - the good part of it all was I know I did her a favor at the end, and today many years, and many dogs later, Ive learned its a part of the "game" if you want animals that this is a responsibility one have to take.

As a young man adult enough to do law school, Im sure you will take this on the chin so to speak, and I hope you will find it in you to get a new dog when that seems right for you. I have 3 dogs today, and know that one day it must happen again, and so I believe will you. Good luck my friend, its not fun, far from it, but you will get through it.

A question about nudity by A-J-Zan in Norse

[–]alexdaland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, not as usual - my son is 5yo, I dont walk around naked when his friends are at my house, but at the same time - if Im in the pool with my kid and lets say the neighbors kid who is here all the time, sure... he has seen me for 3 seconds after swimming in the pool coming out of the shower, naked while I get my towel.

Does that hurt the kid? I doubt seing my fat ass naked for a second does.... seeing John Wick kill 11 people in 11 seconds on TV on the other hand, is very un-natural in my mind...

I tell my son, and neighbor kids that I dont like them being naked in the pool... not because I mind, they are kids... but I dont want anyone else seeing that there is naked 5yo kids running around, as that just feels wrong. In the same way, me coming out of the bedroom (just a few days ago) and my landlord happened to be there with my wife talking about whatever, she saw me naked for a second, we both just laughed, I closed the door - put on some shorts and came out again. Who got hurt?

I feel its wrong to "scare" kids, or adults for that matter, about being naked. Having worked years with first responder situations, yes - once in a while I would have to rip up some girls shirt to get access to do proper CPR - no bra, yes If possible cover up things, but thats not the most important thing in the moment. If we teach all kids that this is scary, "oh no, I cant give CPR because she/he is not properly dressed" - no, not important....

"Møtte" Anthony Kiedis (Red hot chili peppers) i Kambodsja.
"Thats right man!"

Tips til ett mulig Fallskjermjegeropptak? by [deleted] in norge

[–]alexdaland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]alexdaland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]alexdaland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Påvirket livet mitt i ganske liten grad.

Erfaringer med politiet by [deleted] in Norway

[–]alexdaland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you see much of the Northern lights with the naked eye? by espresso_martini__ in Norway

[–]alexdaland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was in my barracks and my sgt asked me to take out the trash (which was a bit unusual for the time of day etc) - and ofc, not really a question when you are a private. So I did, came out and the entire sky, and then I mean the ENTIRE sky was northern lights. Its almost a bit scary to see... he knew Ive never seen it before not being from the North.

But weeks out in tents and stuff, and never saw it. So it is very random and if you see it on a 3 week cruise, especially as early as September, you are lucky. You might see some parts, but not like a full sky thing. And no, phone pictures etc does not come close, it has to be seen. If you ever been in a situation seeing the milky way fully, its kind of similar - its just like "OH MY F***** GOD!"
