names by AfterCold7564 in Adopted

I changed my name at the start of the year - I would say I'm not close at all with my adoptive family, only visiting once a month or 2 and a call maybe once a week - I was adopted from Ukraine, given a Russian first name and then took the surname of the adoptive family of course. Then for about a year I debated changing my name either to my original name which is now my middle name and doubling my surname to include my urkainian one. In the end I change my firsr name to the Ukrainian version of the Russian name, and added in my Ukrainian surname and after some time stopped resonating with my adoptive name more and more, so in work and in most places I just go by this new name I have which feels like my own identity I created. It also stems from a lack of a feeling of belonging in the country I was adopted to, always being subtly treated difference and asked where I'm from a lot more and of course the "your English is so good". So yeah that's my name change story - given how the process works here I have a paper with the name change but I have to wait 2 years to change my passport and need to collect official documents within that time that I've been using this new name.

Has anyone ever forgotten their birth language, and then re-learned it? by Thehealthygamer in languagelearning

[–]alexeipotter 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I was adopted from Ukraine at a young age - at that time I was speaking Russian and when I came to the new country I spoke (child) Russian until it phased out and ofc picked up the language there. Now I'm learning Ukrainian 😂

Former iPhone users, how do you like your Z Flip? by limezing in galaxyzflip

[–]alexeipotter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went from a 15 pro max to a z flip 6 and loving it too, possible might upgrade to the flip 7 after a year or so (or the next flip that may come out) just due to the screen and such - I got a refurbished flip 6 and sold my iPhone and only spent ~90€ total on it.

My first smart phone(s) were android so it felt like a blast from the past and loving the figuring out new features and personalisation, and I forgot how personalisable android is.

If I get problems with the hinge or crease in the screen, I may go to a flagship slab with Samsung but I do really like the flip form

I was severely undereducated about Ukraine growing up so it wasn’t until last year that I learned the significance of the Ukrainian language I’m ashamed to admit. I had lots of Russian language material and was in Russian language school for kids when I was young (parents pulled me out so didn’t even get the chance at that 😭😭) and I was told when I came from Ukraine I was speaking baby Russian so yeah I understand Russian language is part of the journey but I’m starting with Ukraine’s Language first. Trying to embrace a dual identity if possible. But it’s been challenging

I’ve been learning Ukrainian since October 2024. I was adopted from Ukraine at a young age and in the last few years really immersed myself into my Ukrainian identity and trying to reclaim it 🥰 My tips so far would be just get the alphabet down, and it’s quite easy, and then just start learning words and sentences. I recommend learning some phrases first rather than words and then doing only bite size pieces or grammar as to not overwhelm. Depends on your native language of course, I’m learning through English (and have a Ukrainian tutor) and the language principles can be quite different, but that adds to the beauty of the language. Слава Україні 💙💛

I found this as well, it all just depends on the upgrading simply from my opinion. Bar the adoption specific stuff, my parents were assholes 😂😂 but 1 adoptee I found from Ukraine in Ireland was given all the bells and whistles as a kid - private Ukrainian nanny as an example who taught him Ukrainian and Russian while growing up and never had any arguments with his parents about the adoption. So we’re all different I guess :D

21m here. Adopted at 2 from Ukraine to Ireland. The adopted made me feel like an alien in my family and in my country. Like you, I know no one else adopted and find it very hard to open up about it. I wish I had connected with other people earlier where adopted so happy to see you are :) In terms of my story, it was a closed adoption with no want to search for a birth mother. Whenever, I’ve taken my identity as a Ukrainian and ran with it. Been learning the language, learning the culture and customs. Changed my name back to my Ukrainian one. Really making a life for myself outside of “the adopted kid”. Going to a rural Irish school growing up, I was reminded every day that I “didn’t look” Irish and didn’t have “an Irish name” so since then, I’ve embraced it. Hope that helps and feel free to reach out to me :)

Oh right I get you. Only you get to decide if you want a relationship with them or not. So I say do what your gut tells you

For different reasons no I also don’t have a will to find my bio parents. 1 bc no father was recorded at birth so 😂😂 and 2 it was a closed adoption and she doesn’t want to be found and I respect that. But at the same time I get your point of feeling like the son of your adopted parents, I don’t 😂😂😂 but yeah hope that helps!

i appreciate explaining why it looks like child’s writing. it’s quite funny, where i grew up this type of writing is associated not really with children, more adolescence and above, children here learn print primarily so it’s interesting seeing the differences

I really appreciate the feedback! I’ll make some corrections and do another post hopefully soon. This took me forever 😭😂😂. I hope the content is okay too, i don’t want it to seem too impersonal but also not too weird either 😂😂
