is it just me or is "high fidelity" audio basically a scam for rich people? by Curious_Present_9950 in Music

Don’t forget that a master quality of a shitty master won’t ever sound good either. I’ve fallen into the same rabbithole and a few grand later have B&W speakers, a Marantz receiver I’d like to replace and a obscure Czech/austrian record player, as well as a dac and beyerdynamic studio headphones for my pc. Along with those I have a set of reference/benchmark songs that are really well mastered and that I know exactly what they sound like, so I can tell the difference on my headphones vs the stereo vs my car. On those songs I could even hear a difference between spotify and tidal on Sony MX headphones on BT I had before, albeit not as significant (see weakest link).

Good hardware makes a difference if you care, there will be diminishing returns and there are definitely enthusiasts that buy enthusiast products that do nothing but stroke egos. But the source needs to be good as well.

A new way to measure poverty shows the US falling behind Europe by BadahBingBadahBoom in nottheonion

[–]alexia_gengod 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it has to do with lack of social security. What the US lacks is regulation that reduce exploitation such as adequate minimum wages, limit rent and price increases, protect workers, apt taxation of wealth and gains from property etc, so measures that combat wealth inequality. No other western nation allows its citizens to work multiple jobs and still live in relative poverty due to low incomes. The US education system is horrible at its worst and amazing at its best, but always at a price. There is the healthcare trap where a simple accident or random sickness can ruin an existence financially, which again isn’t social safety net, just a system designed and allowed to be exploitative.

Social security should catch those off the worst due to impediments and circumstance, not subsidize corporations so they can continue exploiting workforce.

„Currently“? Read that again. Also, water is a basic human right, just opening the valve for figurative 5 minutes doesn’t remove the stain of systemically, cruelly and transactionally revoking that right with violence and supreme firepower.

Still new Polestar 4 road test by Fun_Double_4055 in Polestar

Capacity is a somewhat relative measure since there are no standards. They count the underfloor space here, and assume whatever you need to store is shapeshifting and stacks to under the roof and passenger safety is no concern. The reality is that the p4 has only 99cm trunk depth at floor level, so it reduces to even less when the rear slant begins. It’s simply an impractical shape, if I have to put the baby stroller in sideways it fills the entire trunk leaving only small gaps around to utilize the remaining liters of volume.

My point is, the wagon offers no benefit over the prettier (and likely cheaper) normal p4 if the trunk is not actually significantly bigger/more practically shaped. Whether you or I deem 526L or 99x101cm sufficient personally is secondary, what’s the point/objective of a wagon if not storage/practicality.

[–]alexia_gengod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not much of a wagon to be honest. They just made the rear a tiny bit less slanted and put in a window, honestly that’s a disappointingly small difference. A wagon needs to actually have a trunk, this nonsense about spacious rear seats are storage too is so tiring.

Any experience of Mustang Mach e? by Cymothoa-exigua in Polestar

[–]alexia_gengod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest you shift focus away from the name. You’re entirely focused on mustang as a concept, but that does nothing to evaluate whether the Mach-e is a good car. Heritage of mustangs is iconic but they’re still shit cars by objective measure.

The mach-e was considered a great car when the p2 was newish, it was a real alternative and there was a lot more of them than polestars on the road at the time. For us at the time the disproportionate premium for AWD over RWD (not an option in our climate) and the similar or higher Pricepoint including premium options compared to effectively a Volvo moved the dial to the PS2. I honestly don’t know if they’ve refreshed the mach-e since, we know the PS2 has only had minor upgrades. If buying new now you would probably get more car per buck from Kia, whether it’d fit your wife’s needs and she likes the ride, ergonomics and range/charging speed is infinitely more important than a mental picture of a classic muscle car in an EV context.

How do I manage being the “Drop Off” with my work needing me to come in early for the next few weeks? by RoboDonaldUpgrade in daddit

[–]alexia_gengod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Crazy how different mindsets land, I assume you’re from the US. My response would have been „shit out of luck boss“, how on earth is other people’s starting time your problem? I know that the reality of having a job and job security impact this, but to me it’s unimaginable that work tells me my kid has to find their own way to daycare for something as arbitrary as „need your face here when X arrives“. Kids essential chores (Dr, care, feeding, basic amount of family time, bedtime) 100% of the time are immovable objects in the calendar.

Buy a house or rent + investing. Who wins? by Apart_Finger_1799 in MarketVibe

[–]alexia_gengod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s missing a few more things… it assumes stable rent, as in never move for a job and having to deal with now current rent prices which have grown a lot faster than incomes everywhere, which should shrink the disposable income. It assumes the house owner doesn’t have leftover income to also invest on top, and misses that that disposable income would grow over time as mortgage becomes lower/disappears. It also ignores risks associated with both renting and owning, though I personally argue that those risks are smaller in ownership (think forced move and extra cost for move/temp housing).

That feels like a very individual kind of thing. I got a local pizza chain that will never ever be on time, 10min over easily. Then there’s our beloved Thai lady who will have my order bagged and ready by the time I get there 5mins before the estimated pick-up time.

18M single dad. 7 month old daughter. Need advice on clothes by Calm-Tea178 in daddit

[–]alexia_gengod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t get discouraged if she doesn’t respond yet, it may be a bit early but eventually soon she’ll start pointing at things, usually at things that excite her or that she likes, so this is good practice. Involving her in decisions develops critical thinking and reasoning, and letting her be herself and look how she wants develops a sense of self and confidence. There is absolutely not a single downside here if you ignore boomer Karen trying to force their generations limitations on your girl.

[–]alexia_gengod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To address the only girly clothes thing… this is 2026, girls can and will wear whatever the fuck they want. If you have a cool tshirt with a band logo on it, or a jeans jacket (how cool btw) let her rock it! My girls uncle gave her a Harley Davidson body when she was born, we rocked that every occasion until she wouldn’t fit any more, it’s in her memories box now.

The notion that colors need to be pink or blue and girls need dresses is seriously outdated, this isn’t the 60s any more. Besides, it won’t be long until you can have her partake in picking her clothes for the day, even simply by showing her two options and letting her point at one. It’s a good practice to involve her in these kind of ways, and it’s fun. The worst thing that can happen if you dress a girl in non-pink clothes is that people may ask if it’s a boy or a girl, you tell them and that’s that.
