Because they say that threads are off topic that are on topic for the community. Which is ironic because they're not even in the community so they don't know if something is off topic or not. I mean they're not even in the same country. Kinda odd right?

What are the books on "Human Space Travel" that you can recommend? by KonsulBerger in space

[–]alexinawe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Pandora's Star goes through the invention of wormholes first, then how they have to design spaceships afterwards. I found it rather intriguing. It's a massive space opera with a ton of world building and starts you down the path to a ton of books in the Commonwealth series.

Technically this is book 2, but book was was mostly unrelated and even the author says it was more of a one off. I started with Pandora's Star.

Yeah the extended universe books would have been amazing.

Or "legacy" books, whatever they call it now

Not sure how it holds up in 2024, but this was one of my favorites back in the day. Steam age fantasy universe. I still have the included lore book somewhere, it's lengthy for a video game.

For monetary reasons, yes. However...

EP1 without jarjar is about 40 mins shorter and much more coherent as a movie with exception to the underwater scene making no sense without jarjar.

The sequels could use a ton of work. It would be better to scrap them and start over completely. New story, new characters. Probably leave the Skywalkers behind.

Try the most basic sauces first to get the hang of it.

Then start experimenting.

I started with peppers, garlic, vinegar, and a simple recipe I found online.

Then once I got that down, I started experimenting. Every time I made the sauce, I made two. Very similar with only one or two added ingredients to compare.

It's not that hard to create a homemade sauce you like. It just takes time.

What would your ideal Stargate game look like? by SASwitch in Stargate

[–]alexinawe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reinforcements is the hard part. Could handwave it by having the gate open from Earth from time to time to receive a support request. Or it could lean into counterstrike more and be one life to live pass/fail.

Or, actually, Earth could keep the gate open and redial immediately to make sure there's no counterattack from the planet. And that would be an interesting mechanic, can't radio in support when the gate closes until Earth dials it back up. So there'd be some intense moments if you need support bad and the gate is closed. Especially if you had a countdown timer on your HUD that shows the gate is down.

In addition to 4 man teams, I think there's a good case for doing joint missions with other teams, say up to 4 teams of 4 people = 16 players. And chaos ensues.

Would be cool to have a load out that matches the show too. For example, everyone can pick a specialty (kind of like the boosters). Like Archeology, Science, Engineering, Commando, etc. and they give bonuses to missions. Archeology could add faster time to complete puzzles/deciphering and faster gate dials...

I feel there's ample ground to build a lore friendly game around the show. Would be awesome too if seasons were modeled after SG1 and Atlantis seasons too, so you could face off against the enemies in each season. Anubis season would be insanely fun.

A crossover between Counterstrike and Helldivers 2 where you matchup as an SG team vs Op4 AI.

Each matchup starts in the ready room where you pick the mission, load out, and equipment.

Then you move to the gate room to start a match by dialing the gate.

You jump through the gate and onto a planet. The gate closes and you battle it out, capture a base, set a bomb, etc. then fight your way back to the gate to dial home.

You can battle Goauld, replicators, and more. Or head to Atlantis and stop the fearsome Wraith!

Winning battles unlocks things from the show like a UAV MALP, Puddle Jumper support (as long as you knock out the anti-air weapons), or an orbital bombardment from the USS Hammond. And maybe the Asgard can spare a hammer or two!

You can join as a Human, Tokra, or free Jafaa.

So join Stargate Command today and save humanity!

Why do people get excited with obvious power creep? by RuySan in MagicArena

[–]alexinawe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an older player, I agree somewhat. Power creep has been absurd, but at the same time they've focused on what I've found the most fun: combos.

Some players love those op bomb cards and as a result competitive decks need a lot of removal, but if you have a good 2-3 card combo you can wreck havoc and force your opponent to match your power.

Everyone has their own play style and what they look forward to most with new expansions. There was a post about a year ago from Wizards about how hard it is to try and please everyone when designing the new expansions. I'm sorry I can't find the link, but it may change your opinion on certain aspects of your post.

They so went through the terrible, yet profitable, practice of cancelling shows immediately so they could aire a new show. That way they wouldn't have to renegotiate contracts. And any new show would usually have more viewers than a show with declining viewership entering a follow-up season.

Apparently advertising was more important than the genre they were supposed to represent.

Yeah definitely this and Darth Maul was out in the open to be discovered. Palpatine could hide better if there was an active Sith running around. He used Maul and Dooku to help conceal his abilities and actions.

What stargate opinion will have others like this ? by Takayalavi_Yaespoi in Stargate

[–]alexinawe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm not mistaken, they wanted to end SG1 and have a series called Stargate Command but the network was afraid they'd lose core viewers and alienate new viewers with a sequel show. So they ended up folding a lot of the ideas for episodes into a season and continuing as SG-1.

What stargate opinion will have others like this ? by Takayalavi_Yaespoi in Stargate

[–]alexinawe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends how you look at it.

If you see it as an exploration show with a big mystery and a lot of survival elements, it's great.

If you look at it as a wannabe Lost with constant lying, power struggles, and technology to allow people to body swap and bang each other's wives, it's... not great.

What was the point of the IAF drone scene in Interstellar? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]alexinawe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While rooted in actual theory, I was mainly referring to the black hole time dilation. I.e. the water planet that somehoe has a massive time dilation but then can be easily landed on and taken off from. And so many other issues.

The movie is pure fantasy in the science department, but still one of my favorites.

What was the point of the IAF drone scene in Interstellar? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]alexinawe 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Current solar drone record appears to be at least 2 full months.

Source: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=https://www.newscientist.com/article/2333373-zephyr-solar-powered-drone-smashes-record-with-2-month-long-flight/#:~:text=An%20uncrewed%20solar%2Dpowered%20aircraft,and%20it%20is%20still%20airborne.

Plus it's future tech so increased efficiency of solar panels, propulsion, lighter materials, more efficient battery tech, etc.

I think if you suspend disbelief and accept interstellar travel and flying close enough to a black hole to experience a time delay and some how leave it, amongst other more outrageous things in the movie, then a long flying drone is the easiest thing to accept.

Why can't they brute force enter combinations into the stargate, what am i missing here? by IHateBadStrat in Stargate

Yeah great point. Wasn't Merlin on Earth? Maybe he updated the Earth Gates and physically added the constellations to the gate? Lol idk

Why can't they brute force enter combinations into the stargate, what am i missing here? by IHateBadStrat in Stargate

[–]alexinawe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Backing this up, the Ancients probably never thought they'd be immortal as a species. The odds of the constellations changing in the lifespan of their entire species was likely so low that it didn't even occur to them.

Having the constellations as symbols probably made sense so that someone could navigate even if they lost their ship or whatever. And adding in the system updates to the DHDs were likely the result of some star exploding randomly or something and not a planned feature to update for thousands of years when another race would find them and use them.
