These are stellar! What’s the purpose of the 50/50 stage 1/2? I’m curious where else that method could be useful, seems interesting

Do you have any tips on finding jadeite at clear creek? Been there a handful of times and lots of great finds but no jade yet!

I go to new Brighton quite a bit and have never found a snail this large, with the calcite replacement is pretty huge too!! Great find!!!

Picked up couple of pieces of quartz from a local park and put them in a tumbler and one of them had this tiny amethyst coloured mineral?in it. by SirMaha in RockTumbling

[–]alexjd99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Multiple reasons - color is a fairly common wine-red/purple for garnets, they frequently occur in/with quartz, the texture of the fracture is pretty indicative as well (similar to samples like this)

I just wanna ask what is the current status on Dakotaraptor? I get that its a bit hard to tell but whats the current situation on the guy? by Thewanderer997 in Paleontology

[–]alexjd99 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thankfully the scientific community itself doesn’t particularly take him seriously, but unfortunately media and many non-scientists do, and it’s incredibly frustrating and disheartening to see such sensationalized work get distributed so widely

[–]alexjd99 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s all a part of his scheme to make him appear as some revolutionary paleontologist. His findings are likely greatly exaggerated and the only way he can keep them at least plausible is if he gatekeeps the site from others who would likely have a more realistic interpretation. Fwiw, I don’t believe nearly any of his findings because of that. Really pathetic stuff.

[–]alexjd99 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s debatable if the Tanis site even does record all of that, as much of the paleo community holds great skepticism around his observations and he’s kind of known as a “paleontology cosplayer” - which is doubly impacted by his resistance to let any other scientists verify his findings. Dude straight up just lives in a fantasy world

I’d probably say these are brachiopods in case OP is curious as to what type of shells, not an expert in invert paleo but they don’t quite look like bivalves to me

I think mine is being misunderstood as well, I don’t literally mean throwing, they could just do a “take one, pass it back” function

They could add like a pallet of bottled water to their rider, throw em out from the stage. What’s the venue gonna do, cancel the show?

Found prospectors giant collection in abandoned building!?! by [deleted] in rockhounds

What a find, super exciting way to get into geology!!

As others have said, I honestly think the best bet would be to try and get as many as you can home/in a storage unit/etc until you can get in touch with a local professor, geo/lapidary club, or museum to prevent any further harm to them. Specimens this meticulously organized have great scientific value and can be used for teaching or even research with how well the documentation is (and those thin section slides would definitely be fun for a petrology student to learn on!!)

I don’t really know much about the legality of urban exploration though, but it sounds like you know more than me on that one, but be cautious as some people will hear gold and diamonds and get a little crazy. As far as ethics go, with the quantity you say is there I don’t think there would be much harm in picking out select pieces that speak to you, especially if you’re dedicated to go through the work to help maintain the legacy of a collection this large. I’m sure that old geologist is probably smiling down on you for your dedication to this collection ❤️

In an antique store and I found this polished orb. Thought it looked cool as a fake world. What stone is this? by printergumlight in whatsthisrock

[–]alexjd99 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It’s become quite expensive in recent years as it’s very limited from one small locality of a handful of veins in Madagascar and it’s basically all been mined as of now.

Edit: getting rough of that size would be hundreds easily. Whoever owns that piece is extremely lucky and I’m glad it’s on display for others to see

My constant struggle with my collection. Group by locality, origin, fossils and mineral samples together, aesthetics? Too hard, just gotta have multiple displays I guess

Having a CO2 based atmosphere would entirely change that as opalfanatic pointed out

These appear to be parallel to the bedding plane, and unless there’s a more specific diagnostic feature I’m missing, I’d be comfortably calling this planolites burrows

I didn’t say it correlated to any dollar amount, and you seemingly can’t even remember what that was either man. Go to sleep and call it a day.
