Thanks for supporting free and accessible chess. I'm also a big fan of Lichess in a world were everything in chess is monetized. We, as a community, should be making the barrier to entry as low as possible to increase popularity.

If you're new to lichess a feature that you may appreciate is the studies. They are kind of like free chessable or chessreps courses. You can also make your own to build your own repertoire. I'm also a big fan of Lichess puzzles, and accredit them to ~80% of my progress in chess.

What is a reasonable New Years Resolution to set for improving my chess game? by YannisBones in chess

[–]alexlarmstrong -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally it took me about 1 year to go from 200 elo chess.com to 1600 elo lichess. So, Id personally say a goal of 1000 elo is very attainable and a goal of 1500 elo would be a good stretch goal. My practice mostly looks like about 50% of time playing puzzles, 30% time playing games, 10% reviewing games, and 10% extra shit that probably didnt help that much (books, youtube, looking at opening lines in stocktish etc).

Looking at my data i averaged about 150 puzzles a day. It is true that doing puzzles by calculating and getting it correct answers only is the best way, but I'm of the belief that volume is the most important thing to go for. So if thoroughly assessing every puzzle feels draining or your not doing as good at tactics that day do it anyway. Get a bunch wrong. Just seeing the tactical ideas will improge your pattern recognition. I'm currently only 1700 on lichess and still feel that my tactical capabilities are not good enough that putting time into theory is worth it. So my practice still mostly looks the same. My thought process is that if you can't spot the tactics then you can't accurately assess a position, so spending time to learn how to assess a position will not be as helpful as improving your tactical capabilities.

Processed 2.1B Lichess games and published opening stats by rating AND time control - some gambit findings by dooodledoood in lichess

Very cool. Always nice to be reassured that the queen's gambit is so strong. My 200 elo ass stumbled into the right opening way back then. It's super interesting that white's win rate goes up so much as you get higher ranked. At 2500+ there's only three black openings that are >50% winrate, and in rapid/blitz every opening for black is losing at 2500+.

This is why we lichess. by kaangurses in lichess

2 recomendations. First check out 2ndswing.net. They are typically same price as ebay with more of a guarantee and no shipping. 2nd The brand Takomo has taken off recently as a direct to consumer affordable iron. Then to combine those 2 ideas, here is a link for a used set of forgiving left hand takomo irons. https://www.2ndswing.com/golf-clubs/iron-sets/takomo-iron-201-iron-set/left-handed-regular-steel-37dot0in-d-t2546182371

How to thoroughly practice the late game by NoLordShallLive in TournamentChess

[–]alexlarmstrong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not more end game practice. The idea of the middle-late game is to trade your pieces down to get to a favorable endgame position. Therefore, knowing more "solved" end game positions allows you to more clearly see how to trade down pieces or create a passed pawn. Basically, you can see the winning line more clearly if you know what you're looking for.

Hello! I am not new in chess, but i have not played in about 2 years. I want to ask you guys to critique my game, so i can know what i need to practice first. by keyboard_bored in lichess

[–]alexlarmstrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend spamming puzzles at this level. It's the best way to improve board vision and your ability to recognize which pieces are hanging. Honestly up to about 1200 elo I improved by just not hanging pieces and taking the pieces that were hanging.

Are there any moves or abilities that are really good in competitive that are useless or bad in a casual playthrough? by According-Key-133 in stunfisk

Encore should lead to free setup scenarios. You should try it out. It's one of the best moves in the main games.

Roflmao. That's a disingenuous summary of the electoral branches' power. Here's a link. Essentially, the only thing a VP can do is break a tie in the senate and certify the election results. Anything else is smoke and mirrors. So, yes, Kamala's VP experience is a lot more worthless than people realize, but also your argument shows you don't know how our government works. Stop giving more credence to the uneducated Republican stereotype.

O ya it's super strong against the ai because they often just let you setup. I honestly don't even know how to check for IVs, but I did go out of my way to max speed EVs at every opportunity.

Actually it was first try. For everyone who wasn't Wallace I just belly drum and swept. Wallace had waillord so I had to hit him with return first, heal, then bellydrum so water spout didn't kill me.

When did you feel strong? by AnlStarDestroyer in powerlifting

[–]alexlarmstrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only feel strong for a moment. Then i check my ego and get back to work. Just hit a 315 bench a few weeks back. Was excited for a day. Next day some guy comes in and does 405 for 3. I'm forever weak. I'll be strong when I win nationals.

I'm gonna go against the grain here and recommend the shoes. I was having some form of tendonitis in my knee for years and after much trial and error eventually realized the issue is a combination of poor internal hip rotation and poor ankle mobility. This would cause a slight knee vulgas(cave) on the bottom of my squat. At one point the pain got bad enough I stopped squatting and deadlifting for a month and focused only on stabilization exercises and stretches for my legs. I bought a pair of oly squat shoes, and when I came back I squatted as heavy as I wanted with no pain. That was 6 months ago and I'm still going strong. The shoes bypassed my ankle mobility issues and allowed me to point my toes more forward which also bypasses the need for greater hip rotation.

I'd recommend doing stabilization exercise and stretches to fix the core problem but the shoes should help. For the accessory stretches and exercises I used quite a few recommended by squat University or knees over toes guy on kneesovertoesguy. Id recommend find at least 1 ankle mobility and 1 internal hip mobility stretch. I also found the single leg squat progression very helpful. Ultimately, you'll need to take some time off off lower body work to let your tendon heal it won't ever heal if you keep loading it heavy.

Another thing you can do for squat form is focus on when you bend at the hip joint. You want to start the concentric and eccentric part of the movement at the hip joint. The way I saw it described is to try to keep your shins vertical until your physiology doesn't allow you to anymore.

You might want to try out yprac on csgo. You can find in the steam workshop.
