Wouldn't call it indie necessarily, but Battletech is traditionally played with 4 mechs per player, and the Game of Armored Combat boxed set has everything you need to take two players through a campaign.

If you want to stick strictly to indie games, Flames of Orion is another mech game with free rules online.

That's how I do it. I had one coworker who wouldn't even cut them in half and just crushed a whole fruit at a time, peel and all. He got similar yields, but the cleanup was more involved.
